You unlock this door with the key of creativity. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of combos, a dimension of chaos, a dimension of the cards. You're moving into a land of both victory and fun things and ideas. You just crossed over into... The Kitchen Table
With this casual series, I will be taking an idea, whether it be a combo or theme, and making 2 to 3 decks out of that idea. This will hopefully draw in more, newer players and possibly give you new deck ideas. So, what're we waiting for? Let's do it!!
One card that has been invading my thoughts with ways to snap it in half is Illusionist's Bracers.
Okay. Illusionist's Bracers is a fun card that has a lot of potential. Letsa see here, it can:
-
Be cast for 2 and equipped for 3, a possible turn three equipped dude.
-
It copies ACTIVATED ABILITIES. So, Prodigal Sorcerer would now ping for 2.
-
It doesn't copy mana abilities, though, so Birds of Paradise, you are officially off the list.
-
Finally, you could choose new targets for the copied ability. Prodigal Sorcerer would now kill the two Goblins that mockingly grin back at you when you glare with intense hatred. Oh, sorry, I was recollecting on some, ahem, unfortunate memories.
Now upon first viewing Illusionist's Bracers, the first thing that came to mind was Aphetto Alchemist. These two cards are crazy! Untapping TWO things for a single tap of a creature. What's even better is you could use one untap for the alchemist himself, granting even more untaps. How can we break this? Icy Manipulator. With this, you could repeatedly tap your opponent's board down. But we need a way to make at least 1 mana that is also an artifact or creature to untap as well. Mirrodin Artifact Lands anyone? How about Darksteel Citadel? We also need some kind of way for our opponents to lose. Simple, Chronic Flooding and Lust for War. These can both mill and burn out the opponent. Let's add in some tutor in the form of Fabricate and Reshape, mana acceleration with Lotus Bloom and we got a deck!
Land
4x Steam Vents
6x Island
2x Mountain
Creatures
Other Spells
4x Lust for War
4x Fabricate
4x Reshape
4x Lotus Bloom
Now, I'm thinking of a six-letter word. You find these in the backs of booster packs and they are fun to draw on. The answer is... TOKENS. The devious word that invokes terror into the hearts of the unprepared. How could we break Illusionist's Bracers with tokens? Many routes, actually. For example(s):
-
We could use Illusionist's Bracers + Godsire to make a lot of big beasts.
-
We could use Illusionist's Bracers + Rhys the Redeemed to pump out double tokens.
-
We could go the evil route and use Illusionist's Bracers + Krenko, Mob Boss to churn out fiery Goblin children.
This is casual Magic, so we are going for the fun factor. If that's so, let's INFINITE COMBO with Krenko, Mob Boss. Here's how we do it:
COMPONENTS
1x Mana Echoes
1x Staff of Domination (NOTE: You could use Intruder Alarm, but since we already did a Blue/Red deck, we are gonna use the staff.)
If you can't see it already, equip the Illusionist's Bracers to Krenko, Mob Boss. Then tilt sideways on Krenko to make one little bastard, which then gets copied by the Illusionist's Bracers, generating two more goblins, and with Mana Echoes, you get 1 mana for the initial tap, 2 for the first copied goblin and 3 for the second copied goblin. With the 6 mana floating, use 3 to untap Krenko and 1 to untap Staff of Domination. Rinse and repeat until you have infinite goblins and infinite mana. Add some more goblins and some big spells, and we got a deck.
Land
22x Mountain
Creatures
Spells
4x Mana Echoes
Well, I hope you enjoyed this week's episode of Kitchen Table Chaos. If you have any ideas of different cards or combos and you would like to see them in a deck, please feel free to leave a comment down below. Stay cool, play fun, until next time!

With goblins, as long as you have a sacrifice outlet like Skirk Prospector you can use Thornbite Staff and with Umbral Mantle you have the same untap without having to use the untap on the staff. (Less moving parts.)
I've used it in my Krenko's Commandos EDH deck.

I also like a flipped Erayo, Soratami Ascendant and Curse of Exhaustion. Counter everything :)

That seems absolutely brutal with Olivia Voldaren. I like it!!
I didn't think of those two other cards. The staff has so many uses, though, it seemed right to include. It would be a mana sink for the extra floating about.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love board locks! Those combos are awesome! I'll see what I can do!

you have Mana Echoes almost correct with the interaction in checks when the goblins enter play and mana echoes resolves off the stack for this reason if you have krenko with the bracers and no other goblins then you would be able to tap krenko for 1 goblin copying the effect with the bracers the mana echoes would be put on the stack inbetween the the first and second effect of krenko giving you 1x2 mana for 2 then the next trigger from the bracers resolves now seeing you have 2 goblins makes 2 more then the echoes gives you 2x4=8 mana so off one activation you would have 10 colorless mana not 6. this is interesting because you have enough mana to cast and combo off the staff in the same turn and with other goblin accelerators then you could combo even faster allowing you to use a card like Skullclamp to reach your combo faster by sacing your goblins for massive card draw after floating a massive amount of mana it is my favorite interaction in my krenko EDH deck.

Oh, ok, I must have done my math a little bit wrong. I must have thought it didn't count the initial creature. Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't use Skullclamp because the extra mana floating could be sunk into the staff, plus the deck is very similar to one of my friend's who runs Skullclamp, so I didn't want to copy him.

How do I subscribe to future Kitchen Table Chaos articles? Do I have to search for them each time?

I will try to get a new one posted every few days. They will be on the front page of T/O.
March 22, 2013 3:57 p.m.
Sweet!
Maybe the Urza lands (Urza's Tower , power plant and mine) next, without playing with a stupidly expensive deck.
Or Manabarbs.

I am planning on posting a new article about every 3-5 days, and the Urza lands and Manabarbs will get the limelight very soon. Thanks for the suggestions!

"This is casual Magic, so we are going for the fun factor. If that's so, let's INFINITE COMBO"
Say what now? Infinite combos aren't high on my list of fun things to play against. At least these combos require more than 2 cards, so they take a little work to pull off, but still ... =P

I see where you are coming from. Some are more fun than others, I think. Staring down a frustrating combo would not be fun, but a trillion goblins and five trillion mana would at least make me smile =). Thanks for the input btw, I will keep that in mind for upcoming episodes.

Try Master Biomancer with Infinite Reflection and Primal Surge for your next article. I've tinkered a bit with them and think they would be fun. Try em out!

I like the Manabarbs , Oblivion Ring , Worldfire combo myself.

That sounds like a sick combo. I already wrote the next article, but you can expect to see that awesome combo in the future.
That is pretty sick, I will try to do an article on Manabarbs in the future.

This article is pretty sick. Def gonna run a variation on the infinate deck

I used the vampire route with it. Tribal Deck: Vampires. With Olivia Voldaren, Viscera Seer, and Captivating Vampire, you quickly control their creatures, then sac them with some other cards on the board to get you a dominance over the game.
