sad to not see certain generals such as Kresh the Bloodbraided, Arcum Dagsson, Captain Sisay, Damia, Sage of Stone and a few others but we can't have all our favorites in the top seeds although im sure many came very close.

Why is Kaalia of the Vast not in this?

  1. Zur the Enchanter - broken as hell
  2. Edric, Spymaster of Trest - somewhat more fun to play, although close fight
  3. Thraximundar - requires a deck built around him, which is what a general should be like. Gisela fits into any deck.
  4. Azami, Lady of Scrolls - close fight again, but azami can kill better and faster than scion.
  5. Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind - way more fun than Momir Vig, Simic Visionary. especially with all the infinite combos
  6. Uril, the Miststalker - see Thraximundar
  7. Karador, Ghost Chieftain
  8. Oona, Queen of the Fae - Oona kills, Child of Alara frustrates

(1) Glissa, the Traitor is interactive.

(2) Edric, Spymaster of Trest is at least interactive

(3) Gisela, Blade of Goldnight is far too sexy, and I'm always a fan of Boros Generals.

(4) Azami, Lady of Scrolls

(5) Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind is just silly.

(6) Uril, the Miststalker

(7) Norin the Wary is hilarious.

(8) My friend's Child of Alara deck is just hilarious to play.

  4. Momir Vig, Simic Visionary
  5. Uril the Miststalker7.Karador, Ghost Chieftain
  6. Oona, Queen of the Fae (My pick to win it all!)

How did Horde of Notions miss the dance?

Okay, I understand your reluctance to involve some of the more cheesy and/or broken cards in the game but if you're going to make brackets to determine the best Magic card, you need to include the best Magic cards. This EDH/Commander bracket is missing Captain Sisay, Sharuum the Hegemon, Sliver Queen, Arcum Dagsson, Kresh the Bloodbraided, The Mimeoplasm, and I'm sure several others, and is instead filled out with a number of cards that are either not all that great or just plain dumb.

  1. Zur the Enchanter wins for pure power reasons
  2. Jhoira of the Ghitu wins for being more flashy
  3. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight wins because she's just a better card and Thraximundar is right on the edge of being worth including in this bracket
  4. Scion of the Ur-Dragon wins because DRAGONS, BLAM!
  5. Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind wins for combo power reasons
  6. Uril, the Miststalker wins because Rabid Wombat
  7. Karador, Ghost Chieftain shouldn't be in this bracket, but he wins because Norin the Wary shouldn't be here even harder
  8. Oona, Queen of the Fae wins because Child of Alara shouldn't be in this bracket

  1. Glissa, the Traitor So adaptable, can play a number of ways. Also, one of my two main decks.
  2. Edric, Spymaster of Trest Nobody likes losing to suspend, and who doesn't like drawing cards? Political masterpiece...
  3. Thraximundar GRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIXIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! Sorry Gisela...
  4. Scion of the Ur-Dragon Dragons, Reanimator & WUBRG? Isn't that what this format is about in a nutshell?
  5. This one is a toss up, both fun, both Ravnica...Momir Vig, Simic Visionary just because I've been digging Simic lately and green is much better for card draw than red.
  6. Uril, the Miststalker Voltron at its best
  7. Norin the Wary there is so much graveyard hate out there...Karador is a sad Centaur.
  8. Oona, Queen of the Fae How many infinite mana combos can YOU think of....

Honorable Mention - Mayael the Anima...look how many Mayael decks are on this website and see how they all play differently, the adaptability of white and how people view red really make a difference for her playstyle, and who doesn't like flipping over big creatures. Even if the main plan isn't turning them sideways.

Tough bracket to call. Because it's not just about power and it's not just about winning. Commander is a format that is intended to be a lot of fun. So, that has to factor into the decision. There are a lot of great commanders that just didn't make the list that should have. Captain Sisay, The Mimeoplasm, Riku of the two reflections, Kresh, Arcum, Sharuum, etc, etc.

  1. Zur the Enchanter for power reasons
  2. Edric, Spymaster of Trest because I think encouraging your opponents to back stab each other is about the most awesome thing in multiplayer.
  3. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
  4. Scion of the Ur-Dragon I mean seriously. It's magic. Who doesn't like dragons?
  5. Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind Combo-tastic AND a dragon!
  6. Uril, the Miststalker What's better than a musclebound Rabid Wombat? A hexproof one!
  7. Norin the Wary A very tough call for me. Karador, Ghost Chieftain is a much more diversified choice here. Mono-red does not give you a lot of options. But, if you can bring Norin to the table and have a blast then you are definitely fulfilling the spirit of commander play. So, this wins in my mind.
  8. Oona, Queen of the Fae

  1. Zur the Enchanter because of the sheer stupidity of what he can do.
  2. Jhoira of the Ghitu because of her super fast combo potential.
  3. Thraximundar because he drops earlier then Gisela, has haste, kills stuff with each attack, and steadily grows bigger.
  4. Azami, Lady of Scrolls because she's stupid. Just.... stupid.
  5. Momir Vig, Simic Visionary because he can combo off just as fast as Niv but also has access to the best colour in the game (Green).
  6. Azusa, Lost but Seeking because she is mana ramp in it's purest form. By the time Uril hits the field Azusa can already be so far ahead that Uril doesn't stand a chance.
  7. Norin the Wary because of how often he's underestimated. Norin is a really brutal general to go against, Confusion in the Ranks anyone?
  8. Oona, Queen of the Fae because she's super easy to combo off.

Yeesh. I'd rather hit my head repeatedly against a brick wall than play against some of these generals. I'm going with apt142, and choosing the ones that I'd be more likely to actually play a game against without just packing up my decks and walking away.

1) Glissa, the Traitor

2) Edric, Spymaster of Trest

3) Thraximundar

4) Scion of the Ur-Dragon

5) Momir vig, Simic Visionary

6) Uril, the Miststalker

7) Norin the Wary

8) Child of Alara

Who chose these? This list is missing SO many better EDH Commanders. Lets not forget the top tier Arcum Dagsson...

March 20, 2013 6:39 p.m.

Rewdog says... #27

  1. May he rot in hell with me for voting him but... Zur the Enchanter

  2. Jhoira of the Ghitu Queen of the nuclear bomb.

  3. Thraximundar as his black mana can easily kill gisela.

  4. Scion of the Ur-Dragon because Mind Over Matter is NOT a General.

  5. Moamor Vig, Terrorist sandwich maker. (Inkwell Leviathan as top bun, Evolve creature in middle (Adaptive Snapjaw), and Deadeye Navigator Tossing meat on the evolve creature as the bottom bun. Moamar Vig's Terrorist Sandwich!

  6. Azusa, Lost but Seeking. Turn 4 Uril? Or Turn 4 Avenger of Zendikar?(+100% of the plants)

  7. Norin the Wary. #Better than Houdini

  8. Another one i will kick myself for Oona, queen of infinite combos.

I'm fairly new to the EDH format, but was told that the commander never goes to the graveyard. If this is true, why would Child of Alara be any use. Or am I wrong in my thinking?

March 20, 2013 8:46 p.m.

Rewdog says... #30

When your General is sent to the graveyard or exiled, you can choose to put it in the command zone, or leave it be and allow it to go to said grave/exile zone.

GureiSeion says... #32

  1. Glissa, the Traitor - Actually requires playing the game to use her ability.
  2. Edric, Spymaster of Trest - Plays politics, doesn't automatically scream "kill me" when cast.
  3. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight - Allows more shenanigans of the two.
  4. Azami, Lady of Scrolls - Gives tribal creatures an upside when "on the defense."
  5. Momir Vig, Simic Visionary - Still leaning against the ones that scream "kill me" when played.
  6. Azusa, Lost but Seeking - Now there's an underestimated general that lets Timmys have their fun.
  7. Norin the Wary - If he's actually being cast, you know the owner's a good guy.
  8. Child of Alara - Worth the need to mana fix, unlike most rainbow generals. Also, sees little-enough play in a given game that the Planar Cleansing deaths tend to be both fair and painful.

Sidenote: I can understand leaving out Captain Sisay, but no Maelstrom Wanderer?

@sheamagic - +10 points

@Rhadamanthus - My original list included two of the creatures you mention, but Dave refused to seed these in protest unless I removed them (and other "power" generals) for more popular "fun" ones. I can respect that.

March 21, 2013 1:16 p.m.
  1. Glissa, the Traitor (Anything over Zur. Just... Ugh)
  2. Edric, Spymaster of Trest (Allows fun interactions)
  3. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight (I might be a little bit biased on this one...)
  4. Scion of the Ur-Dragon (Five color is always more diverse and fun to play with)
  5. Momir Vig, Simic Visionary (Like Edric, It allows fun interactions.)
  6. Azusa, Lost but Seeking (Mono-Green Timmy Power!!!)
  7. Norin the Wary (Combo-Licious)
  8. Oona, Queen of the Fae (Tokens. Tokens everywhere.)

Zur the Enchanter cause there are so many different decks i've seen with him

Edric, Spymaster of Trest don't attack me, you won't get a draw

Thraximundar just cause i really want to use him for a general, and there are alot of tricks you can mess around with using him

Scion of the Ur-Dragon just lost t5 to a deck with this commander

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary cause tutor and niv can go burn

Uril, the Miststalker Naya enchantments just sounds fun to me

Karador, Ghost Chieftain just does what the colors are supposed to do

Oona, Queen of the Fae you can actually trigger her ability over and over rather than sending to the graveyard to activate

March 22, 2013 1:54 p.m.

Glissa, Jhoira, Thraximundar, Scion of the Ur-Dragon, Niv-Mizzet, Azusa, Karador, Oona
