vs.

Comments from Muton in bold.

Game 1

Muton wins the toss and plays first. He keeps an opener of 3x Plains, Swamp, Syndicate Enforcer, Armored Transport, Smog Elemental.

This is a good all-purpose hand without knowing what Caley is playing.

Tappedout keeps an opening hand of 2x Island, Forest, Rapid Hybridization, Prophetic Prism, Frontline Medic, Ivy Lane Denizen.

I was tempted to mulligan this and get something faster, but I don't have the aggro chops to know if that's a good idea or not. To me this hand looks playable enough.

Turn 1

Muton plays Plains and passes.

Tappedout draws Gyre Sage, plays Forest, and passes.

Turn 2

M draws Plains, plays Swamp, and passes.

Orzhov.

T draws Forest, plays Forest, casts Gyre Sage, and passes.

Turn 3

M draws Orzhov Guildgate, plays Plains, casts Armored Transport, and passes.

T draws Forest, plays Island and casts Prophetic Prism, drawing Gridlock. T passes.

I knew someone had to be getting all the Simic cards that were going around.

Turn 4

M draws Basilica Screecher. He plays Plains and casts Syndicate Enforcer, then attacks with Armored Transport and hits. (M 20, T 18). M passes.

T draws Frilled Oculus. He plays Island and casts Ivy Lane Denizen, evolving Gyre Sage (now 2/3, 1 counter). T passes.

Turn 5

M draws Gift of Orzhova. He plays Orzhov Guildgate tapped. He casts Basilica Screecher with extort. (M 21, T 17). He attacks with Armored Transport and Syndicate Enforcer. T blocks Armored Transport with Gyre Sage and Syndicate Enforcer with Ivy Lane Denizen. Denizen and Enforcer die, and T takes no damage.

Wow, did I just see a Gatecrash limited combat phase with attackers and blockers where no one played a combat trick?

I actually didn't expect a block on the Enforcer. I thought he would want to keep Ivy Lane Denizen around for the counters. Maybe I shouldn't have made that attack.

T draws Island and plays Forest. He casts Frontline Medic and Frilled Oculus. Gyre Sage evolves once and is now a 3/4 with two counters. The Sage attacks and hits. (M 18, T 17). T passes.

Turn 6

M draws Swamp and plays it. He casts Smog Elemental.

CAST YOUR STUFF AFTER COMBAT.

M attacks with Basilica Screecher and hits. (M 18, T 16). He passes.

T draws Prophetic Prism. He plays Island and casts the Prism, drawing Island. He attacks with all his creatures. M does not block. T pumps Frilled Oculus and everything hits. (T 16, M 9). T passes.

Turn 7

M draws Plains. He plays it and casts Gift of Orzhova with extort on Smog Elemental. (T 15, M 10). C reponds with Rapid Hybridization on Smog Elemental, and Gift of Orzhova fizzles. M makes no attacks and passes.

FROG LIZARD ELEMENTAL.

T draws Ivy Lane Denizen. He attacks with all his creatures, and M concedes.

Nothing I can do; didn't have a great opening hand now that I see his deck.

Sideboarding

M boards in Contaminated Ground and boards out Knight Watch.

Three-color deck, Contaminated Ground is pretty good.

T boards in Angelic Skirmisher and boards out Hands of Binding.

I know, I know, you all hate this move. I want to be able to come over the top of him, mana-curve-wise; he probably has one of those "nothing-but-extort" decks and a card like Skirmisher will really ruin his day.

Game 2

M plays first. He keeps an opening hand of 2x Swamp, Plains, Angelic Edict, Kingpin's Pet, and 2x Millennial Gargoyle.

T keeps an opening hand of 2x Island, Cloudfin Raptor, Angelic Skirmisher, Simic Charm, Ivy Lane Denizen, and Gyre Sage.

I feel lucky, and I'm on the draw.

Turn 1

M plays Plains and passes.

T draws Plains. He plays Island for Cloudfin Raptor and passes.

Ok, good, yes, but how about a Forest?

Turn 2

M draws Plains, plays Swamp, and passes.

T draws Island, plays Plains, and passes.

Turn 3

M draws Gift of Orzhova, plays Plains, casts Kingpin's Pet, and passes.

T draws Simic Charm, plays Island, and passes.

Well, at least I'm not missing land drops, I guess.

Turn 4

M draws Gutter Skulk. He plays Swamp and casts the Skulk with extort. (M 21, T 19). He attacks with the Pet and hits. (M 21, T 17). He passes.

T draws Prophetic Prism. He plays Island for Prism, drawing Rust Scarab. He passes.

One more turn before he starts to play, it looks like.

Turn 5

M draws Basilica Screecher. He casts it with extort. (M 22, T 16). He attacks with the Skulk and the Pet. T blocks the pet with Cloudfin Raptor and casts Simic Charm to give it +3/+3. The Skulk hits, and the Pet dies. (M 22, T 14). M passes.

Damn. Oh well, worse things can happen.

T draws Forest and plays it. He casts Gyre Sage, evolving the Raptor. (Now 1/2). He passes.

He's going to build up.

Turn 6

M draws Midnight Recovery. He casts Gift of Orzhova with extort on Gutter Skulk. (M 23, T 13). He attacks with Skulk and Screecher. Raptor blocks Screecher. Gyre Sage blocks the Skulk, and gets Simic Charmed. The Skulk dies, though it does lifelink for 3. (M 26, T 13). M passes.

Got a lot of those, do we?

T draws Plains and plays it. He casts Ivy Lane Denizen, evolving Raptor to 2/3 and Sage to 2/3 with 1 counter. T attacks with the Sage and hits. (M 24, T 13). T passes.

One disadvantage of the extort-heavy limited decks is that you're always tapped out and your opponents can often attack with total confidence. Of course, that may be a small price to pay for all the extorting.

Turn 7

M draws Boros Reckoner. He casts Millennial Gargoyle and passes.

Really need white.

T draws Island and plays it. He casts Angelic Skirmisher, evolving Raptor and Sage to 3/4. T attacks with Sage and Raptor choosing lifelink with Angelic Skirmisher and hits. (T 19, M 18). T passes.

Turn 8

M draws Swamp. He casts Angelic Edict targeting Angelic Skirmisher. Then he passes.

T draws Rapid Hybridization. He casts Rust Scarab and orders triggers such that Cloudfin Raptor and Gyre Sage evolve, and Gyre Sage gets the Ivy Lane Denizen counter. Raptor is a 4/5 and Sage is a 5/6. T attacks with Sage and Raptor; M does not block. (T 19, M 9). T passes.

This deck is like an avalanche once it gets going.

Turn 9

M draws Plains and casts Boros Reckoner with extort. (T 18, M 10). He passes. End step, T casts Rapid Hybridization on Boros Reckoner and M concedes.

Jesus, that was awful.

FROG RECKONER LIZARD IS NOT WORTH $20

Thoughts

Rapid Hybridization is a fantastic card! So many uses in this deck. Thanks to the folks who pointed out the Ivy Lane Denizen interaction, although I didn't get to use it.

Feel like I just got some bad luck in that one. Needed Boros Reckoner out a lot sooner and I got a little mana locked there in game 2.

In turn 6 why your Gyre Sage can block Gutter Skulk that enchanted Gift of Orzhova ?

March 7, 2013 9:26 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #4

It can't! Hold on, going to see if Muton wants a do-over b/c of gameplay error.

March 7, 2013 9:27 p.m.

http404error says... #5

I completely support your piloting skills and your boarding in Skirmisher.

March 7, 2013 9:28 p.m.

http404error says... #6

I believe Cloudfin Raptor blocked the Skulk, not Gyre Sage.

So are you planning on Hybridizing your own creature to trigger Denizen?

March 7, 2013 9:32 p.m.

http404error says... #7

I beg your pardon, I did not read closely enough!

March 7, 2013 9:33 p.m.

Goody says... #8

Well realistically, you could have simply blocked the Gutter Skulk with Cloudfin Raptor and used Simic Charm on it, and you simply would have lost one more life.

March 7, 2013 9:34 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #9

Muton and I agree that it would have had a minimal effect on gameplay had he caught it at the time, which he says he should have done anyway. He notes that I could have killed the Skulk with the Raptor using the Charm anyway, and the net difference is that I didn't take a couple of damage that I should. So it'll stand.

as much as I like Extort in theory, I don't think it's all too amazing in standard, in other formats that are less limiting and had access to Culling the Weak, and Dark Ritual it'd be awesome!I really can't wait to see 'Revenge of Roger Corman' (I know we haven't agreed on a name, but this one is the most fitting, and I just love it) go against a Dimir, or a Boros based deck. I'm going to bet that Dimir will give us a run for our money, but we will end up winning 2/3 matches, and as for Boros, that's the only thing I think could beat us down. We'll give a good fight, and if luck is on our side we'll win. Good luck Caley, you've been handling this monstrosity pretty well.

SwiftDeath says... #11

i like how the deck plays very much. with all the quick wins we keep getting I think there is one or two decks from looking at the lists that can handle our speed. good games I actually like the boarding in of the skirmisher for game 2 as I was a fan of having it mainboard but it does work better as a sideboard in the event it sits there as a dead card for 2-3 turns but when it hits table it helped tremendously with lifelink bringing us back into a comfortable range to keep up our aggression.

March 7, 2013 11:24 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #12

I fully support boarding in the Skirmisher. The only problem I have with it is that I don't think we should be having to board it in; I think it should've been there to start with. grumble mutter grumble

This deck is certainly really impressive once it gets rolling. As long as we can survive and stabilize into the midgame, we can usually get a lock on the game.

March 7, 2013 11:33 p.m.

I'm not sure that many will get the Roger Corman reference without looking it up. But I'm glad you like it.

I think Muton's deck has some potential. I'd run 18 lands and fewer 4 and 5 drops. The deck wants to cast spells every turn with mana left over to extort. When your spells cost 4 or 5, you don't have anything left for extortion.

"This deck is like an avalanche once it gets going." This line made me smile. Reminds me of my favorite flavor text from Flowstone Slide.

March 7, 2013 11:38 p.m.

Our deck is built to win before the midgame. Angelic Skirmisher doesn't fit that theme, so it sits in the sideboard.

It is a good side in against decks like this that force a midgame, as it can bring us out of board locks.

A fair enough argument.

Well it looks like today, our deck was "Sharks? We don't need no stinking sharks!"

Anyway, another nice win, and well played. I didn't want to say it before Caley played him, but looking at the decks lists, I figured this one to be the weakest of the field. So we'll have some real games still to play. I feel very good about our deck though.

So yeah, I barely got the Corman reference, and I'm 38. But if we do use it, how about "Corman's Heroes". (Mixes the shark joke with a reference with the rag-tag band of soldiers in "Kelly's Heroes").

Plus it sounds more like a deck name than a movie title.

Or.....there's always Medicated Crabs. Tee hee.

@vic How about Crabs on Steroids?

Heck it's just fun to think of names for this bucket of chum of a deck.

I am eagerly awaiting match 3. Bernard's deck looks like it will try to go over the top of our small aggressive creatures. Will he succeed? Stay tuned and find out!

That would get my vote.

sewellius says... #27

Like SwiftDeath, I think the use of the Skirmisher was perfectly appropriate. I think we've seen it pay off at least once now too. I do understand why it's in the sideboard, though.

landgrafb: Yup, that's it exactly. Leaped right out at me when I looked at his list.

KrazyCaley says... #36

@landgrafb and vic - He says he hadn't really run into mana screw previously, but I think that's sheer luck. You can't really get away with that kind of mana spread, in my opinion.
