Ah, the infamous Gaze of Granite pack. I was really hoping that at least one of the on-color creatures (Rakdos Drake , Maze Abomination , Maze Sentinel ) would wheel back to us. I don't see us really even side-boarding any of the remaining cards, so I think it's fine to just hate-draft what could hurt us the most. I could be pretty easily convinced otherwise, I think.

I really don't care for whats left in this pack, and the fact that Mending touch is the only on-color CHEAPLY costed card in here makes it worth a small look. The fact that it allows us a (very VERY slim, I know) combat trick to, possibly, bait the opponents critter into a "trade" that will keep ours on the field is the only thing I see that's good about it...

Otherwise, my next two picks, in this order are Crypt Incursion and then Lyev Decree ....

I think Crypt Incursion is a fine sideboard card here, but if we want to hate draft, it'd be either Awe for the Guilds or Rubblebelt Maaka . And this draft has been so weird, both green and red have been so open, yet we haven't been necessarily cut from any colors...

Let's be honest, exactly zero of these cards should be in our mainboard. With that in consideration, we should get rid of the most versatile and playable card left. The Maaka will be good in someone else's deck. None of the rest of these cards will.

landgrafb said it all. Decree isn't going mainboard, and the maaka is a better card than Awe for the Guilds . It's the card we'd most likely see in someone else's deck

We don't want to play Rubblebelt Maaka . But we're also not going to end up playing Lyev Decree . We'd be picking the Maaka because it's a better card and we don't want to have to play around it against someone else.

It's a red Giant Growth with the option of being played as a creature. We don't want to play against that.

I'm kind of worried about the quality of the creatures we're seeing now though, as I'm not sure we have enough playables ourselves.

Pretty disappointed that Courage made the cut though, since it has no place in our deck where we might have actually played Gatekeepers.

Utterly shuts down scavenge, so this is a valuable sideboard card. We're definitely not going to be playing red now we're so deep into green, so all the votes for the Maaka are wasted.

Similarly, Lyev Decree is very narrow. Detain works best when you have a lot of it, controlling the board. The potential lifegain from the Incursion could keep us in the game after an unexpected bomb hits table. I mean imagine they bloodrush that Goliath onto their guy. We just incursion once it's resolved, and their goliath helps us gain so much life we don't even care about taking the hit.

Also, right now our early game is nonexistent, so we'll be taking some damage before we establish ourselves on the table. This is a nice way to help off-set that in the middle of the game, when we sideboard it in versus aggro.

Also hate drafting the Rubblebelt Maaka makes no sense. This is the second time we've seen this pack and he's still here. If there is a red player out there, he's likely the only one, and this pack might not get back to him. Given how open red has been this whole draft, his pool is already so good that one more rubblebelt won't make any difference.

I would agree to sideboard the Crypt Incursion except we haven't really seen ANY scavenge at all. I mean we've drafted most of whatever had scavenge in the first place since that's two of our biggest colors.

I think hatedrafting in this situation is better then drafting a sideboard card that might be useful against a small portion of the ~20% of cards that we haven't seen if assuming those cards even appeared at all.

It's not just about shutting down Scavenge, though of course if you consider the possibility anyone pulled Varolz it's still worth considering. But the life-gain is very good too.

Hate drafting has a small chance of affecting one other person's deck, we may never face. Drafting for us as a higher chance of affecting how OUR games work out. If there were no cards in our colours then fine, but I think Crypt Incursion could definitely be helfpul. Even the guy who picked up all the Punish the Enemy cards would have some trouble trying to kill us with the burn if we're gaining 9+ life.

The lifegain alone isn't really enough to make it a main deck worthy card though.

Are there any other reasons we should be running it as a side deck card other then to stop an incredibly small chance of Varolz down if he showed up.

I mean if there's a valid strategy from the cards that we have seen that is stopped by this card I'll gladly change my vote, but as it stands hatedrafting the cat has a better chance of messing someone up then drafting a anti-scavenge sideboard sideboard card that will statistically never be used.

Obviously it's not main deck worthy but it is in our colours and I can imagine scenario's I'd side it into our deck. Varolz is not the only reason, just another example. Aggro decks that take a lot of life early will be in red, red will have a few burn spells after we stabalise to try and finish us.

The Maaka, however, we'll never use because we're not in red. So it's something that might help our deck in certain matchups, versus something that might hinder the deck of someone we might face.

One might versus two mights, that's what draws me to the Crypt Incursion .

So the irony is that the one deck that we would side Crypt Incursion against is the very deck that we would be hatedrafting against by picking the Rubblebelt Maaka .

I might take a look through all the cards and see how many bloodrush cards there have been. If there's been a sizable number of them it might be worth taking the Crypt Incursion instead, but if there haven't been a ton of bloodrush cards in the packs then the Rubblebelt Maaka will be better instead since the Crypt Incursion would only be a decent pick if there are a lot of creatures in our opponent's graveyard.

Essentially, if there's a reasonable enough number of bloodrush monsters that we can expect to consistently drain 6 or so life then it's a better pick then preventing them from having a card that can let them do an extra 3 damage.

He's the only reasonable card left in this pack. Might as well remove a tool from our enemies' boxes.

Decree is a terrible card, by the way. It is not at all worth a card slot in our deck. Even if we take it we need to keep it away from us.

I like how anytime I come up with a single example, you assume that's now the only scenario I'm suggesting could ever happen. I'm merely illustrating a point without going into exhaustive detail, they are examples not comprehensive lists.

Bloodrush puts guys in the graveyard. Scavenge cares about guys in the graveyard. Aggro uses a lot of little guys and fills their graveyard up, relying on a bomb or burn to finish the job. If we come up against a mill strategy, we can gain a lot of life. If we come up against a creature-heavy deck, our Balustrade Spy s will fill their graveyard up and we might decide to bring incursion in to capitalise.

Don't be quite so narrow in your thinking. There are a fair chunk of times the incursion could be a viable sideboard option but, as I've said, zero where the maaka in our pool benefits our deck

Just counted and I saw 8 bloodrush monsters. One of those, the goliath, really shouldn't be counted for this.

By drafting the Crypt Incursion that would leave us with 7 targets that could bloodrush us.

Looking at the odds, that means if one deck has all the bloodrush cards that we would have around a 40% chance of breaking even with Crypt Incursion , around a 35% of possibly getting ahead, and around a 25% of falling behind.

Hmm, even with 7 bloodrush targets in someone's deck those wouldn't be bad odds for a sideboard card.

Drafting Crypt Incursion and Rubblebelt Maaka both serve a similar function as they are both hate against whoever is running the Green / Red deck, but looking at the odds adding a Crypt Incursion to our deck hurts them a lot more then taking a Rubblebelt Maaka from theirs.

Honestly, with the amount of creatures we have, we want any creature on color. Otherwise our Unflinching Courage s may become dead draws. Besides, it helps stall out to our bigger creatures.

If either player (it can target us) has 5 creatures in their graveyard, it can gain us 15 life. That's kind of a lot. And it's very achievable considering the presence of bloodrush and the fact that this is limited play where your average deck contains about 16 creatures.

@vishnarg: Because we already have enough better non-creature spells for our mainboard, so Lyev Decree is not going to make the cut. Having it in our sideboard has no impact because it is never going to be boarded in. Crypt Incursion , on the other hand, can be good against some decks, thus is worth picking for our sideboard.

Strong points from thebeardedshuffler about it. Maaka is clearly the stronger card, but Incursion might actually do us good out of the sideboard.

vishnarg - because Lyev Decree literally does almost nothing. We only have 22-23 slots to put spells in in our deck; spending one of those slots on a sorcery-speed card that does so very, very little is a terrible idea. Even out of the sideboard. There's almost no situation that a Lyev Decree would help us where the job wouldn't have been done better by any durdly creature instead:
If we're behind and need to stall, a creature could chump block and possibly even trade with an attacker.
If we're at parity and need it to break through a stall, another creature would just give us more dudes to get around blockers with.
If we're already winning, Decree is a total blank, which is not something we ever want.

Incursion at least has some value out of the board against Scavenge decks and can get us some extra turns against aggressive decks.

Lyev Decree is good if you're trying to push through damage. We don't really need to. Our damage will come from Stab Wound s. Or it will come from flyers, which already evade most blockers. Or it will come from creatures with trample, which gets past chump blockers at least.

We might also use Lyev Decree if our opponent has a swarm strategy going. For a single turn, we can prevent a group of attackers from getting around our walls. But if we block the bigger guys, we're not taking that much damage. Crypt Incursion can gain us back that much life and more.

You've seen the arguments supporting the uses Crypt Incursion could have, the matchups we'd use it in. Why don't you explain the matchups we'd use the decree in? We obviously wouldn't main board it, so when would you sideboard it in?

I can definitely see this a being decent sideboard against a number of decks. It's generally going to be at least 6 life. Note it says target player and not opponent, this makes it a little more flexible.
