Slaughter Games hands down

May 3, 2013 7:32 p.m.

Absinthman says... #2

I see Voidwielder as the best card here. Rites of Reaping 's effect doesn't impress me with its cost. Eyes in the Skies doesn't seem to fit in what we are trying to do. I understand that Voidwielder fits in nicely.

May 3, 2013 7:35 p.m.

Absinthman says... #3

Slaughter Games is a very nice sideboard card, but I don't think we can afford the luxury of taking cards for our sideboard this early when there are other picks available.

May 3, 2013 7:38 p.m.

magerob says... #4

Voidwielder I'd agree with. Nothing very good here.

May 3, 2013 7:52 p.m.

Voidwielder is the only card really worth it. Thats about it.

May 3, 2013 7:58 p.m.

Cdawg44 says... #6

Slaughter Games doesn't do work in Limited like it does in Standard.

My vote goes to Voidwielder , it goes with our theme.

May 3, 2013 8 p.m.

TridenT says... #7

Voidwielder seems a pretty straightforward pick here. Games will be really hard to use in a format where people may have cards from three entire sets. If this were RTR-RTR-RTR, it might garner a higher pick, given you can basically just name "Your color's bomb" if you're not sure what to target. Here? Not so easy.

May 3, 2013 8:06 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #8

Games is trash in Limited. Don't be lured by what it can do in Standard.

I'm actually going to vote Eyes in the Skies . Voidwielder is good as well, but trying to think ahead a little, I think Eyes can have a higher upside if we end up going into BGW colors, which is a color set I like better in this format than WUB. I'd hope to avoid Dimir if at all possible, there's only two or three Cipher cards worth the cardboard they're printed on, and one of those is a rare.

Plus, it's surprise blockers, and even if we're not splashing green there's a reasonable handful of tokens in all the colors (save blue) that could be worth populating.

The Voidwielder is quite strong in this format, though, both for his big butt and because there's a lot of plans that get messed up when you bounce things (Deviant Glee/Madcap Skills, scavenge, evolve, tokens...) I won't be disappointed with him at all.

We keep getting bad packs... Hhaha, but I would go with either Concordia Pegasus or Voidwielder .

Here are my reasons:

Voidwielder is fairly nice, and Unsummon effects are nice in Limited. Now, the downsie is that it costs 4 mana for a 1/4. If it was 3 mana for a 1/4 that would be magninficent. But seeing as it's not, it makes it a little worse.

Concordia Pegasus . I am actually a huge fan of this card in Limited. It's tough to kill, and can trade with most creatures in the format.

May 3, 2013 8:18 p.m.

tempest says... #10

oh ok then. whoops. :P first time limited guys... in that case, i think i like Voidwielder

May 3, 2013 8:19 p.m.

Going to jump in on Voidwielder . This format sees a lot of big mana dudes, as well as some beneficial ETB triggers. And a fair chunk of the good removal is enchantment based. The wielder allows us to get our guys out of enchantment trouble, it can time walk our opponent to some degree, and chumps dudes all day long. Single blue is very splashable and I like Grixis in this format, so I wouldn't be sad if we went that way.

BuLLZ3Y3 says... #12

I REALLY like Eyes in the Skies , and I think that ending in Junk colors would be much better than Esper. However, Voidwielder is also really good.

Also, AlexOAwesome, Voidwielder costs 5 mana.

My vote goes for Eyes in the Skies .

Oops my bad. Was basing off of memory. :/

May 3, 2013 8:33 p.m.

Goody says... #14

Ugh I'd prefer to stay away from blue if possible. Not nearly the best color in this block, especially in limited.

I don't see much reason to take Eyes in the Skies over Concordia Pegasus , except for instant speed.

I'm voting for Concordia Pegasus

May 3, 2013 8:50 p.m.

Voidwielder seems too pricey for me. 5 mana is a lot for that effect, even if it is quite strong.

I vote for Eyes in the Skies . The instant-speed has given me a number of profitable combats that my opponent didn't expect to lose.

May 3, 2013 8:55 p.m.

Darkness1835 says... #16

Were this a real draft, with real cards, Slaughter Games .

Alas, it is not. That being the case, I'm not impressed by Voidwielder simply because he's too expensive, albeit a nice blocker. Concordia Pegasus is a nice evasive creature who can also block if we need her. Nothing out of color worth taking (not that we're particularly locked in at this point), but my vote is Concordia Pegasus .

Voidwielder is the pick if we want to go esper. Esper is a good choice given the pretty nice orzhov shell we already have, and it will only get better as we go. Going Junk is a bad idea as all our best cards won't be very obtainable as far as Golgari/Selesnya. However we still have time to pull some sweet Orzhov and Dimir cards to round out the esper deck. Voidwielder gives us the ability to go esper and if we do, we must remember this format is not as ruthlessly fast as RTR or GTC. Additionally, in a format full of 2/4s a 1/4 isn't as good, but he should be the pick anyways. And he has some wierd synergy with gatekeepers. if we get an Ubul Sar Gatekeepers and have two gates we can get extra value out of his ETB. I vote for Voidwielder because he does what our slow deck wants to do.

May 3, 2013 9:29 p.m.

bluemax87 says... #20

Concordia Pegasus . Here's why. You get an early 2-drop with flying and a high defense. In a Limited format, how much flying will we see? How much damage can be doled out within the first couple of turns? KrazyCaley is a control player, and dropping a creature that boosts his defenses while he waits for his deck to provide answers will play a stronger role here than anything else. Additional recommendation to Tower Drake due to it being a T3 Flier that can get a bigger rear-end if need be...

If we wanted to consider creating a token-control deck, I'd recommend Sundering Growth to mess with the opponents' mana-fixing artifacts...

1-Concordia Pegasus

2-Tower Drake

3-Sundering Growth

Voidwielder will be invaluable against Gruul-ish decks that will come by in the next 2 packs.

May 3, 2013 9:45 p.m.

Spker says... #22

Swift Justice as awesome as slaughter games is in constructed, in limited it's not that great, unless we get at least another one (which isn't really going to happen) swift justice gives us that nice little combat trick we may need. there will be other flyers, and we seem to be leaning close towards a Orzhov feel. the more we draft those 2 colours, the better deck we can make. I know it's early but the earlier we make a decision. the better our chances become.

May 3, 2013 9:49 p.m.

tomtom9112 says... #23

honestly i think Sundering Growth would be the better pick because 1 Ethereal Armor slapped onto any creature is a threat in draft. and it stays with your color choice of white for now. leaving you the option for a better pick down the road in a different color instead of being forced into a 3rd color on your 5th pick. just because this card is hybird white/green doesn't make him have 3 colors. it can persuade him for green as a third color later on but doesnt tie him down too it.

May 3, 2013 9:49 p.m.

SwiftDeath says... #24

Eyes in the Skies it is a decent combat trick which is really good in limited and can help get through surprise damage and there are several good token producing cards so the populate can be used on a potential beater and at the very least you get two 1/1 flyer's for one more then Midnight Haunting .

May 3, 2013 9:58 p.m.

Remember that Voidwielder is a 5-drop Unsummon with bad creature stats, without Flash. I'm not saying he's bad necessarily, but he won't stop a Bloodrush like a real Unsummon could. At best he'll slow our opponent down by a turn. His effect is strong; I'm just really unimpressed by his cost and subpar power.

May 3, 2013 10:33 p.m.

XWing says... #26

Eyes in the Skies . At worst it's 2 power in the air at instant speed. Never underestimate the power of instant speed. I'm sure KrazyCaley can back me up on that point.

Voidwielder is just way too clunky. By the time we can drop him his effect won't matter as much.

May 3, 2013 10:50 p.m.

couldn't have said that better myself.

May 3, 2013 10:51 p.m.

TikiShades says... #28

Concordia Pegasus is a cheap flier that can chumpblock quite a few early threats. Voidwalker is too expensive; I want to be able to do something significant on turn 5. My vote goes for the former.

May 3, 2013 10:52 p.m.

Concordia Pegasus

It's a good platform. Hook up Deviant Glee , Madcap Skills , or Ethereal Armor to a fat-bottom body with evasive moves and suddenly it's a party.

May 3, 2013 10:54 p.m.

JokerWx13 says... #30

How come no one likes combat tricks? I'd take Swift Justice in my opinion

May 3, 2013 11:06 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #31

landgrafb, XWing - Even though I vote the same as you, I disagree about the reasoning. Voidwielder's effect has proven itself to actually be highly relevant. For whatever reason, this format has seen more auras played than previous draft formats I've seen, and Voidy punishes those. But even more so, there's a large chunk of this block's mechanics that he's just plain rude to.
Cipher? No more encoded card for you. Scavenge? I hope you enjoyed paying all that mana for nothing, bro.
Populate? He's a 5-mana "destroy target creature" against most GW decks.
Evolve? Your little 0/1 flying evolve isn't nearly as scary when you recast him on turn 5 or 6.

Of those, Evolve and Populate decks are pretty strong and commonly drafted, so having a card that's effective against two strong archetypes is valuable. Plus, 4 toughness is the "magic number" in this block - there's a lot of things that do 2 or 3 damage here, and a 4-butt is very resilient.

All that said, I still think Eyes is the right pick. But you're selling Voidy short.

May 3, 2013 11:10 p.m.

Nice rundown. I believe I under-appreciated him. Sticking with my vote, though.

May 3, 2013 11:22 p.m.

anewsome says... #33

I think I'm going to go with Eyes in the Skies here. Populate should not be overlooked in a format where we will win on the back of mediocre creatures.

drakanar says... #34

My vote is for Concordia Pegasus . He's a big-butt flyer.... can't do much better than that t2.

May 3, 2013 11:41 p.m.

DaShPrime says... #35

Either Concordia Pegasus or Towering Indrik . The latter has saved me multiple times in draft, but I'd probably favor the former because you've already picked White

May 4, 2013 12:01 a.m.

dbrannon says... #36

Wow there's only like 2 people here with sense. Why the hell would anyone want to intentionally try to go 3 colors this early? Seriously? I vote Swift Justice first strike and lifelink.... its a no brainier. Though my second choice is the Pegasus

May 4, 2013 12:06 a.m.

anewsome says... #37

dbrannon - why are you being so negative toward everyone here? So far, we have picked White and Black, that means every suggestion in those colors is staying within the two color limit you want us to keep. Picks like Concordia Pegasus or Eyes in the Skies are still in keeping with the two-color scheme.

While Swift Justice is good, creatures will win in limited. We already have 2 solid removal options in Stab Wound and only 1 solid creature. It is not at all unlikely that we will get some decent tokens to populate, so Eyes in the Skies is at WORST 2 instant speed fliers with a very great chance of being better.

May 4, 2013 12:21 a.m.

Deco_y says... #38

Concordia Pegasus gets my vote. 3 toughness in the air is exactly what we need to stop early gamr flyers. Also at 2 mana makes a nice blocker before our T3 Stab Wound .

PEGASUS!

May 4, 2013 12:30 a.m.

zephyrkey says... #39

@dbrannon, we aren't intentionally trying to go 3 colours. Given the amount of mana fixing in this block, and especially since we're drafting the set with the most fixing last, the goal is to pick the best card out of every single pack, regardless of colour.

Pegasus, Indrik, and Voidweilder are all solid choices here, though I think my vote is going to go to the 'weilder, if for no other reason that all the work he did for me in RTR draft.

May 4, 2013 12:33 a.m.

The problem with Swift Justice is that it's a one-time deal. You get just as much bang for your buck out of both Eyes in the Skies and Voidwalker, but those both come with added board presence. Creature combat wins games in Limited, and you can't have creature combat without creatures.

May 4, 2013 12:37 a.m.

SandyDufresne says... #41

Eyes in the Skies for the reasons listed above.

May 4, 2013 12:47 a.m.

dbrannon says... #42

To those who picked white, I'm sorry didn't mean you. Eyes in the Sky isn't at all a bad card to have here as it could work essentially as a Lingering Souls , however considering our last pick Ogre Jailbreaker , Swift Justice is going to be the best option. Though I wouldn't object to the birds or Pegasus

Towering Indrik would definitely be my choice here. It's not too mana intensive, and it can block basically any flyer in limited profitable, including the Steeple Roc that's been doing work in DGM drafts.

May 4, 2013 1:50 a.m.

Agog says... #47

Towering Indrik for me too, followed by Concordia Pegasus

Having a response to fliers seems to be all I would look for on this pack.

May 4, 2013 1:56 a.m.

vic says... #48

I think I'm ready to say we've been signaled to go Golgari.

And I vote for the Giant Spider . I mean Towering Indrik . Everything else is either junk or too expensive for what it does.

May 4, 2013 3:28 a.m.

I agree that Towering Indrik is a boss, but I would disagree with the part where everything else is junk. Both of the main cards we've been fighting over are highly playable in their own right.

May 4, 2013 3:50 a.m.

Vorxis says... #50

Concordia Pegasus . A 1/3 evasive creature turn 2 is good. Plus, if somebody else plays Eyes in the Skies , Peggy would still win that fight. eyes cost 4 mana as well, making it less appealing in my eyes, unless we have another creature token out that is significantly better than 1/1.

Evasion is good, but evasion with toughness is better.

May 4, 2013 5:03 a.m.

People seem to be thinking this will be a bear brawl, the way GTC limited has been. In my experience, the full block draft is much more midrangy. The pegasus might look appealing but you are picking it for blocking, and it'll stop doing that properly pretty quick. 1 damage on a flier is pretty bad without another ability.

For this reason, the people who think the wielder is too pricey are wrong. 5 mana is easily achieved, and blue has some powerful cards worth splashing for. The inkdrik isn't so bad, it blocks better and blocks fliers, but for one more mana we have the bounce effect, which gives a LOT more utility.

Eyes in the sky is pretty bad. If we were in triple RTR, there'd be plenty of token stuff to spare, but DGM has little and GTC has less. So the odds are eyes will always be a 4 mana lingering souls with no flashback.

I started the Concordia Pegasus movement!

May 4, 2013 11:11 a.m.

sewellius says... #53

I'm preferring Concordia Pegasus as the pick in this pack. I see Voidwielder being ineffective against Evolve, Extort, and Bloodrush mechanics, and is a little slow for my tastes, not being a bomb. I prefer things fast and easy to cast, and evasive creatures have really shined for me in the past.

A second choice for me would be Swift Justice . A nice cheap combat trick that can typically save a creature and gain life to boot. It would also be nice if we pick up any extort sources to capitalize on the cheap cost.
