E - "I agree. Another crappy pack, but the Pegasus isn't a terrible creature to have."
Picks so far
2x Stab Wound
This pack:
1 missing rare, 1 missing uncommon, 3 missing commons
Plains
since it looks like we are going B/W, we should go with Dryad Militant
May 4, 2013 7:49 a.m.
Dryad Militant seems good, above average body, decent ability.
May 4, 2013 7:56 a.m.
We should go ahead and go Junk and take the key rune. Fixing and ramping is never bad.

I am not suggesting that we fixate on any particular colors, but I think Golgari Guildgate and Selesnya Keyrune are both viable picks at this point. Of the two, I think I'd go with the Golgari Guildgate . It works with the Ogre we already drafted.

If we're not going aggro (and I find it unlikely if we're in the colours we've picked) then the dryad is useless to us. I suggest we take fixing when there's nothing relevant in the pack, and I think the Golgari Guildgate is the better fixing in this pack.
May 4, 2013 8:21 a.m.
Golgari Guildgate or Selesnya Keyrune . Tower Drake would be my third choice.
May 4, 2013 8:22 a.m.
Looking at all the previous packs, I wouldn't be surprised if the person getting passed to is drafting Rakdos. Looking at the stuff passed almost all the better cards were Rakdos.
That might be a tiebreaker worth considering if you are debating between the Selesnya Keyrune and the Golgari Guildgate since I suspect that he would take the Golgari Guildgate over the Cobblebrute to potentially draft into Gruul.

Either the key or the gate. We haven't drafted any green yet though.
The key is useful and mana ramps, while the gate come in tapped. However, there's a lot of cards that correspond to having gates.
All in all Golgari Guildgate because of the ogre and all the cycles of gatekeepers.

Easily Dryad Militant , s'a 1-mana 2/1 with upside.
May 4, 2013 10:03 a.m.
Tower Drake . Flying and can be a solid blocker.
These packs are so bad.

None of these blue cards are worth pulling us into blue for (and of them, Inspiration is the better pick than the drake for us, I think) but the gate is more on-color AND we'll need them for the ogre and any Gatekeepers we get later. We'll be able to get more later, but there's no reason to ignore this one when there's nothing else good in the pack.
(This has been an astoundingly mediocre set of packs for us. I hope our Gatecrash and Maze luck is better!)
May 4, 2013 10:44 a.m.
- Dryad Militant : one drop, nice ability
- Golgari Guildgate nice mana fixer
May 4, 2013 11:01 a.m.
NobodyPicksBulbasaur says... #21
Guys, the ability on Dryad Militant is completely useless in this format. It's just a 2/1 for 1. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is effectively a vanilla creature in this block.
I'll toss my vote in for the Golgari Guildgate The rest of the pack is underwhelming, and I'm not in love with Tower Drake.
May 4, 2013 11:28 a.m.
Anyone else notice the lack of black cards in this pack? Black is probably going to be the most drafted color in this draft. Question is, do we want to try and make a grab for the best black cards possible and hope the others aren't drafting it too hard, or do we just splash it or not use it at all?
I think we'll probably get some good black picks in the second pack since it's being cut on this pack. We'll probably have black in the final deck anyways, even if it's not a big part of the deck. Golgari Guildgate will help us the most in that situation, it gets my vote

As much as I do not like te idea of going Junk (mainly because the probability of getting decent Selesnya and Golgari cards in further packs is close to none based on what we saw until now), I have to cast my vote for Golgari Guildgate . I don't like Selesnya Keyrune that much, and Guildgates have important interactions in this format.
May 4, 2013 12:05 p.m.
Selesnya Keyrune . Mana fixing and a creature all in one is never a bad thing. Keyrunes played a decent part in my pre-releases.
My 2nd vote would be Golgari Guildgate . Gotta make sure we get one relevant Guildgate in this "pack" and the next before Pack 3 because, guess what! Everyone else will probably be grabbing their own Guildgates. I don't feel comfortable getting stuck with only 2 or so Guildgates, because then Jailbreaker and maybe even the gatekeepers in the DGM packs won't be anywhere near effective.
May 4, 2013 12:11 p.m.
Axebane Guardian wanna talk about mana fixing, and removal bait? plus a decent blocker. Just about anything from this pack would be nice, but Axebane will usually get my vote

Golgari Guildgate . These packs have been so sad. I'm hoping GTC and DGM are more exciting.
May 4, 2013 12:49 p.m.
Golgari Guildgate . I feel like it's important to get a couple gates now because they're going to get snatched up later in the draft when people realize that they're actually important

Golgari Guildgate but Axebane Guardian is also a possibility. Still not sold on green.

Golgari Guildgate . We want to enable our Jailbreaker, and DMZ will have plenty of uses for it.
May 4, 2013 2:08 p.m.
Axebane Guardian does everything here -- it seems like people are leaning towards a green addition regardless with either the gate or the keyrune -- why not just take the best card in green in the pack? he fixes mana, the big butt is great in a controlly / grindy deck that we appear to be building, and with the ogre gatekeeper already picked, he's pretty good ramp.
May 4, 2013 3:59 p.m.
thebeardedshuffler says... #35
Better not to rely on mana fixing that can be killed.
May 4, 2013 5:03 p.m.
NobodyPicksBulbasaur says... #36
Nobody's gonna waste removal on him unless he's all we've got. He's actually a pretty decent pick.
Changing my vote to Axebane Guardian
May 4, 2013 5:20 p.m.
I would go with Dryad Militant for a decent 1-drop that is flexible on colors (even if it's ability is useless on limited). Or the Selesnya Keyrune , mana fixing and little ramp are always nice to have.
May 4, 2013 5:21 p.m.
I've gotta say, the mojo is not on our side here. I feel like the moment we pick Golgari Guildgate our P2P1 will be like, Boros Reckoner or something woefully out of color.
So, in the spirit of self-jinxing, Golgari Guildgate go!
May 4, 2013 6:32 p.m.
MagnorCriol says... #40
@landot - the thing about the Guardian is that he's not a Gate, which is now actually a thing worth chasing since they put in the Gatekeeper cycle of valueriffic dudes in Dragon's Maze, not to mention the Jailbreaker we already have. Guardian is far from a bad choice, but there's more upside with seeking Gate synergies, especially since the best Gatekeeper - Ubul Sar Gatekeepers - is in our colors.
May 4, 2013 7:44 p.m.
The biggest problem with Axebane Guardian imo is when drafting in Gatecrash green will be avoided like the plague with the current picks KrazyCaley has.
Both White/Green (Selesnya) and Black/Green (Golgari) tend to be more Return to Ravnica guilds and I'd be surprised if there are going to be any good Selesnya or Golgari cards left in the Return to Ravnica packs that we are going to get.
I mean are we really going to draft Blue/Green (Simic) or Red/Green (Gruul) with the way our current picks look?
Imo at this point we should be trying to set up which guilds we want to draft in Gatecrash and Green is probably the worst color to pick in regards for that. Golgari Guildgate for a black gate for the Ogre Jailbreaker is our best pick imo with the Tower Drake being second in case we draft into some good Black/Blue (Dimir) cards.
The Selesnya Keyrune isn't a bad choice either, but I realistically see it only being a white ramp for 3cc. since I highly doubt we are going to draft a ton of green cards to use the green mana on or add a lot of green mana to our deck to use on the 3/3 wolf.
May 4, 2013 7:59 p.m.
Axebane Guardian might wheel. Guildgate will not. I stand by my vote for the guildgate
May 4, 2013 8:06 p.m.

Supersun - Don't forget there's Dragon's Maze at the end of this, after Gatecrash. I think most people right now are actually sort of thinking along your plan, but with different colors - what we've got right now is a few black and white cards, which is a Gatecrash guild, not an RTR one. Unless we're phenomenally lucky with both our Gatecrash and our Maze packs, going three colors or two colors and a midsized splash is basically unavoidable.
There's a lot to be said for the strength of a BGW deck, with Orzhov's extort giving the deck what it needs to live into the mid- to late-game where scavenge and populate can shine. And there's some very saucy cards in GW and BG in Maze.
May 4, 2013 8:07 p.m.
I'm thinking green might end up being one of our colors anyways. As I see it, the best colors in this format are black white and green, possibly in that order. Green will ramp/fix/beat, and blqck and white will remove and keep us alive. Even if we don't get much green in gatecrash, we will still get orzhov and some evolve, and theres always dgm.
May 4, 2013 8:12 p.m.
Good points, if we happen to end up drafting into Green in Maze then all 3 cards will likely be solid choices.
Only one of the 3 will be a card we will likely throw into our deck even without green though and that's the Guildgate.
That and my theory that the person that we are passing to is drafting Rakdos (seriously, look at all our previous packs after our pick has been removed and ask yourself what you would draft and most of the good cards are Rakdos) and giving him the gate sets him up very well for Gruul are the biggest reasons why I think the Guildgate takes it.

Current count, unless I'm dumb (which is more likely than not, really)
Axebane Guardian : 3
Dryad Militant : 6
Golgari Guildgate : 18
Selesnya Keyrune : 3
Tower Drake : 4

Seems like the Guildgate is gonna take this one, which is probably for the best. Fixing using one of the colors we know we're playing is important, especially if it's a gate. None of the other cards in this pack are gonna win us the game, so we may as well make our deck more consistent.

Not ready to move on yet. Waiting on two other drafters. I estimate that they'll get back to me by 8pm Pacific time.
May 4, 2013 9:44 p.m.
Never mind, archived back to the original post and I guess you chose to run it backwards...Anyway looks like green is open so splashing into it can be a good idea. 3 green mana fixers, 2 of them combo with ogre...I'd probably take the gate.
May 4, 2013 9:53 p.m.
We have to consider cards in upcoming packs. what do we gain from the golgari guildgate?
Selesnya/Golgari have already passed us as guilds, orzhov being the last of that shard. While guildgates would be nice, we shouldn't take it just because it's a guildgate.
The keyrune suffers a similar problem. Its mana fixing and a body, which is why I like the pick more, but what are we going green for, exactly?
Tower Drake is my pick. It allows us playability in dimir. with our detain, cipher should be good for us, and its a blue creature that would be sweet to topdeck late game as a functionally worse Guardian of the Gateless , but still a good creature.

NobodyPicksBulbasaur says... #57
The guildgates are good fixing regardless of how deep you get into a color. If we splash green later, for, let's say Ready / Willing , then we already have some fixing for it. DGM has good green cards.
May 5, 2013 11:06 a.m.
MagnorCriol says... #58
There's also lots of reasons that we should take it because it's a Gate. We already have one in our deck - Ogre Gatecrasher - and there's a handful of cards in Gatecrash and Maze that are great when you have Gates.

Tower Drake . Fat-bottom with enough mana and a threat in the air to boot
