IMPORTANT - NEW VOTING POLICY - READ THIS!
Ok, counting votes is hard. From now on I am implementing a new voting policy to make my life easier. Here it is:
If you are casting or changing a vote at your comment, THAT VOTE MUST BE AT THE TOP of your comment, and it must be in this format:
"+1 Cardname"
Or if you're changing your vote:
"-1 Cardname
+1 Other Cardname"
Then feel free to write as much commentary as you like below, and also feel free to make comments that DON'T have votes in them. However, if you vote, but it's not at the top, or not in the format above, I will miss/ignore it.
Also, only vote for ONE card. Keeping track of this stuff is pretty hard, and it complicates things a bit when there's a bunch of preferential ranked voting business going on as well. I realize that this might make runoffs more frequent, but I'm willing to live with that.
Thanks! Love, KrazyCaley.

None of these cards are exciting to me, so I feel like they will all be sideboard material. As such, I feel that Hexproof is a better mechanic than graveyard hate.
There could also be a case for Lobber Crew to try to make some sort of Defender.dec, but I don't really see that happening.
May 7, 2013 9:33 p.m.
Just to note though, at least 4 people (including us) grabbed a black related card (including the guild gate) from the pack.
Definitely worth thinking about a plan B in case Orzhov doesn't work out with that level of competition.
May 7, 2013 9:33 p.m.
+1 Cremate
I feel like, at this point, Black is most certainly in our colors, if not currently our sole solidified color. Get some.

+1 Cremate
It's a Deathrite Shaman on a stick (assuming im using that term right) and has draw ability.
May 7, 2013 9:35 p.m.
NobodyPicksBulbasaur says... #8
Two more things:
1: Just because it's in our colors doesn't make Cremate good for our deck. Cantrips with no bonus effect aren't very powerful. Graveyards aren't that relevant in this block. Scavenge doesn't count. It's not prevalent enough. Why spend a mana to draw a card when you could have started with a stronger one.
2: I like the new voting format. Makes it easier for us to keep track of votes as well.
May 7, 2013 9:37 p.m.
Deathrite Shaman is a Cremate on a stick.
(On a stick is a spell ability on a monster, usually referring to one that is good at beating down)
May 7, 2013 9:37 p.m.
landgrafb says:"Why spend a mana to draw a card when you could have started with a stronger one."
Deck size -1. It increases our odds of drawing more powerful cards. Not always useful in constructed where you could just as easily replaced the drawing card with a powerful card itself, but in Draft where the powerlevel of your cards are not all even this increases the chance of drawing our "power" cards over adding another mediocre card to the deck.
May 7, 2013 9:40 p.m.
NobodyPicksBulbasaur says... #15
Yeah I understand that logic, but it also ties up a mana. For the most part, I don't see us running any of these cards mainboard, so it probably won't matter in the end anyways. I just figure that Mizzium Skin has more sideboard potential.
May 7, 2013 10:02 p.m.
+1 Lobber Crew
Honestly, the deck we're drafting is pretty much looking like a sit back and wait deck. Lots of defenders with 2xStab Wound doing most of the work for us.
Lobber Crew is frustrating as balls. I've played against it. It killed me even a game. It turns Stab Wound 's 10 turn clock into a 7 turn clock. If we DO go Orzhov, this card is worth splashing red for. Extort + This and Stab Wound would be INSANE. IN-F#$%ING-SANE.
All we need is a bomb or two and some more removal and we're peachy keen.

I do agree that Lobber Crew is good as well but a whole new colour now is not ideal

The different combos mixed with what we have already, and what's coming will be awesome. too bad we didn't grab that axebane guardian.

Decided that the defend our way to victory plan is worth exploring. If we're not gonna play any of these cards anyways, there's no downside. The upside could be that we have a deck that wins regardless of board stalls.
And I've said it before. We WILL have to pick a third color, so there is no reason not to explore every possibility. No color combination is completely off the table yet.
May 7, 2013 10:38 p.m.
+1 Lobber Crew
Lobber Crew is the only card in this pack that can act as a potential win condition. With Cremate and Urban Burgeoning as our in color options and no guarantee that we will be using green as a splash color, we may as well take the one card that can potentially put the opponent on a clock. Even if we don't use it in the end I doubt we will be losing sleep over missing out on one of the other cards from this pack.
May 7, 2013 10:41 p.m.
+1 Lobber Crew
We're going to see plenty of mana fixing over the next two sets. The Gatecrash packs may send us Orzhov, Boros, and Gruul guildgates; and Dragon's Maze has an opportunity for any guildgate to come around the table. Splashing red as our 4th color and primarily playing Junk colors will be fine. Besides, the format is really slow. Lobber Crew will work great in this deck.

We have a lot of mediocre cards left in this pack so I think we need to look at what hurts us more. That being said we can certainly splash potential colors and with only one green card we still have potential for other colors.

unless someone finds a way to rid themselves of Stab Wound . then it could get a little annoying. but that seems reasonable. so in our GTC and DGM pack, we look for extort and defenders. i like that idea. it opens up a lot of possibilities. thanks Leafs_suck!
May 7, 2013 11:04 p.m.
Honestly, we're no where near set on green as our 3rd color. I'm sorry, but Cremate will draw us a card and thin our deck. I get that. Exiling a card from a graveyard might be worth it if graveyard themes were relevant (i.e. flashback) or if the mechanics were any good (i.e. Scavange). Drawing a card could be handy but card draw is somewhat less important in such a slow format when you'll regularly reach turn 10. That's drawing 17 of your cards, which is almost half your deck. I'm not sure I'd even care about deck thinning, I'd rather just draw a useful card.
Lobber Crew is repeatable ping that can prevent up to 3 damage a turn. That's incredibly useful IMO.
May 7, 2013 11:10 p.m.
I'd also like to point out that Lobber Crew can successfully block any creature that was inside this pack and live, AND deal 1 damage to them after blocking them.
May 7, 2013 11:13 p.m.
+1 Lobber Crew
By the way Lobber Crew can't target creatures. Still the pick here in my opinion since it's the most likely to be of any use to us, even if we run it with no mountains, just fixing/guildgates.
May 7, 2013 11:22 p.m.
i think he meant deal 1 damage to the opponent after blocking the opponent's attacking creatures
May 7, 2013 11:23 p.m.
Tempest is correct. I probably could have phrased that better lol

+1 Cremate
This is the best card. While I want us to be open to boros cards in GTC, the reality is I would put cremate in a limited deck, but I wouldn't put lobber crew in unless I was sorely hurting for playables, or was drafting a defender strategy.
Mizzium Skin is too situational; you need to have it in hand when they target your creatures with removal, in limited this is very unlikely to happen reliably. That makes this a dead card most of the time.
Cremate's virtues are two-fold: it draws a card, so it replaces itself and helps us dig into the cards we need. It can remove a card from a graveyard, which is not an insignificant ability. Many cards return cards in graveyards, and scavenge is a thing. That is situational, but you will virtually always be able to cantrip the card. And last but not least, it's in the one colour we are pretty sure of playing.

Although, I gotta say... If we keep taking all the fat bodies, our opponents won't have any good targets for our Stab Wound s. In this case, I think it's worth it.
May 8, 2013 12:46 a.m.
+1 Lobber Crew
Very tempted to go with Cremate , but the Crew is amazing. Plus it can block a big creature with a Stab Wound all day long. Green could definitely become our splash color if nothing juicier comes our way.
May 8, 2013 12:51 a.m.
Figured I'd throw in a bit of magic trivia that is of no relevance to this topic what-so-ever. The term "on a stick" usually refers to Isochron Scepter , as you would put a spell on it and it became a stick. Like "counterspell on a stick." The Scepter was the stick.
Similarly, the term "on legs" refers to abilities on a creature. Thus, Deathrite Shaman is a Cremate on legs.

KrazyCaley says... #41
@BuLLZ3Y3 - Although "on a stick" now means anything that can "cast" the effect repeatedly. Nowadays you have to say "on THE stick" to specify Isochron Scepter .
May 8, 2013 1:30 a.m.
MagnorCriol says... #42
Other names for Counterspell on a Scepter include "Counterchron," "Permiss-stick," and "Go die in a fire somewhere, you ugly sod, I hope you catch a nasty case of syphilis."
May 8, 2013 2:26 a.m.
Good to know.
I certainly wouldn't mind the Lobber Crew. It's certainly is a powerful enough effect, especially in a deck like this, to warrant the draft in case we draft some more Red. Maybe we'll even get that Axebane Guardian to come back around which along with the lobber would give us 3 defenders so far.
My only concern is that Red may be the most contested color along with Black, maybe even more so if someone is aiming for Boros.

Not interested in any of this pack's cards, so I might as well nab the (annoying) shenanigan that might actually see play. As for Lobber Crew

best common in this set that isn't removal, plus, since we're building a fairly slow deck, it's a valid hate pick. Plus we get to call it 'Lobster Crew' and make all sorts of sea-creature puns. and that is the nuts.

Red looks open, especially slow red (seriously, ring leader over lobber crew?)
We get a good amount of removal coming up in red (things like massive raid, punishing fire, etc..) and good boros cards if we so choose (here's hoping for a mana sink in sunhome guildmage)
Cremate isn't bad but it isn't necessary, either. the cantrip is powerful but nothing is better than boardstate (with a continual ping? sounds good to me)

landot: Never calling it anything else, now. That's beautiful.
TheBearShaker: That happens to me all the time, too. Which is unfortunate since Rescue is a good card that I'd love in any deck I can cast it, and Warrant is...well, completely unplayable. Always disappointing.
May 8, 2013 10:40 a.m.

I like the stall and wound strategy. In a bad case, if we end up taking all the big bodies, at least our Stab Wound s are now plain removal. Then we just ping away with The Crew and our Guard.
May 8, 2013 11:58 a.m.
@MagnorCriol search warrant is great when you have a slaughter games in hand and a lobber crew or two in play. outside of that, I agree warrant isn't that great, but does have it's uses.

Cremate is never worth playing unless we've done a god awful job of grabbing playables. Lobber Crew on the other hand adds some inevitibility and a blocker, even if it's not all that great.
Also, really like the new vote format.

Cremate + Guttersnipe could be a thing if we continue down Black/Red control build.
May 8, 2013 1:21 p.m.
NobodyPicksBulbasaur says... #65
We won't see a Guttersnipe . We're already in the RTR pack, and don't have one. Therefore we won't get one.
Also, that's not a very great combo. It just does 2 damage once, and maaaybe draws into two more damage.
May 8, 2013 1:27 p.m.
landgrafb, for some reason I forgot we were drafting RTR first. Honestly I was just throwing the idea out there. I already cast my vote on the Lobber Crew

Graveyard hate and cantripping are both fine effects, as has been beaten to death already.
However, we could potentially take Lobber Crew just because it's really annoying to play against.
May 8, 2013 5:29 p.m.
SupremeAlliesCommander says... #80
@Arachnarchist - I know what you mean, but it doesn't make sense to draft that way. One player out of 8 will get that card. There's maybe a 1 in 5 chance it makes it into their deck. The chances of them drawing it during a particular game are about 50%. And the odds of them having it in hand with open mana when we target a creature...
Hate drafting doesn't add up.

Graveyard hate really isn't that relevant in this format. Even if they scavenge up a big-bodied creature, we can just Stab Wound it and block to infinity with Lobber Crew or Armory Guard . Seems win-able to me.

It's the only real card left in the pack that can help defend your life and deal damage to the opponent. Though if you were thinking of playing a deck that affects creatures like Stab Wound , it might be better to defensively draft the Mizzium Skin as it can protect your opponents creatures from removal like the drafted Stab Wound or other removal such as Launch Party . Overall though, I think drafting the Lobber Crew is the most reasonable and safest choice out of the other cards.
