Hello all and welcome to another installment of my showdown series where I pit my current standard deck against other standard builds that have been sent in to me. This week we have a crazy-looking Green ramp/devotion deck similar to that of Mihara's PTTHS deck, but with a...large...difference: Worldspine Wurm. Here's golffore297's build:

My biggest worry? That freaking wurm! All I really have is Selesnya Charm to get around it. Let's hope that's not too big of an issue!

Disclaimer: Both decks are piloted by me, Spootyone. I am not a magic pro. This testing series is just as much for me as it is for the viewers, so please remember I'm learning, too. I'm bound to make mistakes or "bad" judgment calls, so bare with me.


Game #1


Spooty (s) wins the flip and chooses to be on the play. The kept hand contains plains, forest, Temple Gardenfoil, Selesnya Charm, Fiendslayer Paladin, Unflinching Courage and Advent of the Wurm

Golffore (g) keeps a hand of 3x forest, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Burning-Tree Emissary, Karametra's Acolyte, and Garruk, Caller of Beasts.


S1: temple garden tapped. pass.

G1: draws Burning-Tree Emissary. forest. pass.


S2: draws Voice of Resurgence. plays plains. plays voice. pass.

G2: draws Scavenging Ooze. plays forest, BTE, BTE and then ooze (ouch...) pass.


S3: draws Selesnya Charm. plays forest. plays fiendslayer paladin. pass.

G3: draws palukranos, world-eater. plays nykthos. Uses nykthos' tap ability to make 5 green mana, which is used to play Karametra's Acolyte. I would normally attack here to give the ooze some food, but we should keep up our devotion when possible. pass.


S4: draws Fiendslayer Paladin. we're a little low on mana, which is not something you want against a green super-ramp deck. I really have to be prepared for anything in the next turn. I decide to run out another paladin so I can hopefully have more blockers when necessary. And next turn we will likely need these charms. plays fiendslayer paladin and passes.

G4: draws Elvish Mystic. plays forest. Okay so with all things on board we have access to 13 mana. That enough to play every single thing in our hand (which is stupid insane...and the play, of course). taps forest for elvish mystic. uses nykthos to make 7 green mana and casts garruk. Uses +1 ability to reveal top 5 cards. two are forests, the others are a BTE, acolyte, and Worldspine Wurm. The acolyte on the field is tapped for 9 green mana, which is used to play the BTE, another acolyte and the polukranos. I could attack now. But I think I want to save the attacks for an alpha strike to get full impact.


S5: draws another voice. Still no land. That's really bad. Though, at this point the only thing keeping me in the game is the potentiality of exiling the polukranos and wurm each with the charms. I'm going to go ahead and exile the world eater now before he has mana available to monstrous him...because no one wants that right now. exiles Polukranos with Selesnya Charm. pass.

G5: draws forest. plays forest. uses nykthos' ability to create 12 green mana, which is used to cast Worldspine Wurm. (because...you know...reasons). Uses Garruk's +1 to reveal 3 forests, a Sylvan Caryatid and another Worldspine Wurm. the forests go on bottom. Taps the acolyte to cast another worldspine wurm. (again...why not?) 2 floating mana is used to cast the caryatid. Now I don't care about attacking and losing devotion. at all. swings with 3x BTE. two are blocked and killed by paladins and the other goes through (s 22/20 g). pass.


S6: draws Selesnya Guildgate. plays guildgate. So much death will be happening shortly. pass. EoT Golffore exiles both BTE from the grave to the ooze and gains 2 (s 22/22 g)

G6: draws Voyaging Satyr. swings with BTE, 2x Worldspine Wurm. One of the wurms is exiled with spooty's selesnya charm. One paladin blocks the BTE and the voice gets stepped on the wurm (does that even make sense?). (s 11/22 g) An elemental token enters the battlefield. Casts Voyaging Satyr. Plusses the Garruk and reveals Worldspine Wurm, Sylvan Caryatid and 3 forests. the forests go to the bottom. taps the acolyte to cast the wurm. Spooty concedes. (BECAUSE TOO. MANY. WURMS.)

Golffore wins game #1!!


Sideboard tech with Spooty: Wow. That's really all I can say about this deck. It's no surprise that 3 Worldspine Wurm by turn 6 is a threat that I can't beat. I mean seriously...THREE??? Gah!! Well, okay. The only thing I have that can beat such a threat is Selesnya Charm, and maybe the Celestial Flare in the sideboard (though this is really situational for the problem and will still result in 3 5/5 wurm tokens). I don't really want that. My only chance I can think of is to be super aggressive. I will be removing 3x Trostani, Selesnya's Voice and 2x Archangel of Thune for 2x Boros Reckoner, Unflinching Courage and 2x Pithing Needle to hopefully combat the Garruk nonsense.

Sideboard tech with Golffore: Holy mana! That was incredible to pilot. To be completely honest, I don't see much we really need to sideboard right now. Ratchet Bomb seems decent for the matchup. The problem is that we'll be destroying all our dudes at the same time, and I really don't want to do that and lose all that devotion. I'm just going to use this as is and we can change that decision if things become a problem, because as of right now there wasn't a single problem to be had.


Game 2


Spooty is on the play and keeps an opening hand of 3x plains, Temple Gardenfoil, Voice of Resurgence, Selesnya Charm, and Boros Reckoner. We fight for glory!!

Golffore keeps an opening hand of 3x forest, 2x Voyaging Satyr, Burning-Tree Emissary and Polukranos, World Eater. LEZZDOOODISSSS.


S1: Temple Gardenfoil tapped. pass.

G1: draws Elvish Mystic. that works. forest. elvish mystic. pass.


S2: draws unflinching coruage Not bad. plains. Casts voice. pass.

G2: draws forest. Plays forest. plays BTE and then Voyaging satyr. pass.


S3: draws forest. plays plains. Attacks with voice and there are no blocks (s 20/18 g). second main, boros reckoner is cast. pass.

G3: draws Worldspine Wurm. plays forest. Taps lands and elvish mystic to cast Polukranos and passes turn.


S4: draws plains. We MUST stop drawing lands. We can't keep on the pressure with flat, open, grassy fields! plays forest. Taps with plains open to put Unflinching Courage on Boros Reckoner and swings with it. Given that the reckoner can be given first-strike, there are no profitable blocks. It goes through. (s 25/13 g) pass.

G4: draws forest. plays forest. Okay so that reckoner is bad. Very bad. 11 mana is needed to deal with it, either through Polukranos' monstrous ability or casting a worldspine wurm. And without Karametra's Acolyte or Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx we really can't get there quick enough. We have to continue to be aggressive though. Now seems as good a time as any to monstrous the hydra, so the elvish mystic and all lands are tapped to give it monstrous 2, placing 2 counters on him and dealing 2 damage to the voice. Now we leave him back to prevent damage from the reckoner..hopefully. pass.


S5: draws Fleecemane Lion. Plays plains. I wanted to save this charm for a wurm, but the hydra is a more immediate problem. Exiles polukranos with the charm. Casts the lion. Swings with the reckoner, and 3/3 elemental token. The mystic chumps the token. (s 30/8 g). pass.

G5: draws forest. This...doesn't look so good. plays forest. casts the second voyaging satyr. We really don't have much we can do at this point. Drawing into Garruk is our only out, as far as I know. pass.


S6: draws selesnya guildgate. plays plains. swings with everything, leaving mana open to monstrous the lion AND give the reckoner first-strike. One satyr blocks the lion and another BTE blocks the elemental token. The lion is monstrous'd before damage. (s 35/3 g) pass.

G6: draws Scavenging Ooze. It's not enough to prevent death from the next attack. concedes.

Spooty wins game 2!!


Sideboard tech with Spooty: Okay that went much more smoothly. Pretty much, reckoner with courage seems to win unless the opponent can get a garruk out. All things stay in.

Sideboard tech with Golffore: Ug. That was a frustrating game. A ratchet bomb for 3 suddenly seems amazing, so we should find room the those. Scavenging Ooze doesn't really do a whole bunch in this matchup it seems. I remove two of those to make room for the bombs and everything else seems good to go. Let's see if we can get a repeat of game one!


Game 3


Golffore is on the play and mulls a 5 land hand with no real goodies. The 6 card hand contains 3x forest, Burning-Tree Emissary, Sylvan Caryatid, and Ratchet Bomb.

Spooty mulls a hand with 5 lands and nothing really appealing either. Then, the 6 card hand only has one land and all expensive cards. I don't ever mull below five typically so the kept hand contains plains, a voice, an Advent of the Wurm, Fiendslayer Paladin, and Selesnya Charm.


G1: forest. pass.

S1: draws Fleecemane Lion. plays plains. pass.


G2: draws forest. plays forest. Casts BTE with Sylvan caryatid. pass.

S2: draws Fleecemane Lion again. pass.


G3: draws forest. plays forest. swings with BTE (s 18/20 g). casts Ratchet Bomb and passes.

S3: draws Selesnya Charm. pass. EoT Golffore ticks the bomb up to 1.


G4: draws Elvish Mystic. plays forest. swings with BTE (s 16/20 g). casts elvish mystic. pass.

S4: draws Advent of the Wurm. discards Fiendslayer Paladin. pass. EoT the bomb is ticked up to 2.


G5: draws BTE. swings with BTE and the mystic (s 13/20 g). plays forest. Casts BTE. pass.

S5: draws plains (oh come on...) plays plains. pass. EoT the bomb is ticked to 3.


G6: draws Elvish Mystic. Man no real gas going on here. casts the mystic. swings with a mystic and 2x BTE (s 8/20 g). pass.

S6: draws Advent of the Wurm. Scoops.

Afterthoughts


Alright so that was truly a rough one. The first game I got absolutely run over by more worldspine wurms a man should have to endure in a single game of standard. The second was won on the back of a couraged reckoner since the opponent couldn't get the cards needed to get that wurm out there, and game three was a gross example of untimely mana screw. But, hey, that's the game we all play. As frustrating as that last game was, I still had a lot of fun doing this playtest.

So what of Golffore's deck? I can say this much: It's so much fun. I think everyone should get to experience running your opponent over with 15/15 tramplers. Is it viable right now in the meta-game? Absolutely, so. I think it could use a little bit of tightening up, but there's not too much I'd change about it. I think maybe Into the Wilds can be removed if need be for...I guess more Polukranoses. That card is essentially the other main win-con of the deck so I think 4 should be run. I also think the ooze can go down to 3 copies.

Now, as for my deck. I've given up on it. Nah, just kidding! But I do need an answer to this kind of deck. It's no laughing matter when your opponent is ramping out of control into some of the most ridiculous cards in the game and youre just looking down at your field like "well, I have a voice soo....yeah...". We all are well-aware that Selesnya Charm can do some serious work, but decks like this will always have more than one threat that needs to be exiled. Celestial Flare has until now taken up three spots in my sideboard. Now? It takes up zero. I think it's not what I need. I have replaced it with Last Breath. This card would've helped me by removing the ramp creatures that were making things get out of control, especially Karametra's Acolyte...eesh...

I must admit the amount of enjoyment both you and I had obtained through this has been really surprising. And this brings me to my next point: I want to be better for you all who are really supporting me. Impressive writing and match-up as usual. Mana screw is unfortunate, and as interesting as it would be to see a legitimate third match, nothing of the sort would happen in a competitive tournament.

If I may, I have a question: how do you choose your match-ups?

Hey I like the change in writing style. Seems more fluid now. If you ever need any help with write ups let me know. I can't make them look like this but if you need a break, I am actually a good writer. And for the next showdown try my Return of RDW out. I haven't enjoyed playing a deck like this in awhile.

Thanks Spootyone for picking my deck! This was really helpful to help me see how it runs against some other powerful decks, and I'm surprised that I even won! I can understand that it was due to a mana screw, but hey, I'll take it. I loved the way game one played out though, as it really shows what I am going for when I run this build. The only thing I might have possibly done differently is possibly side in some Ranger's Guile to stop the Selesnya Charm , but seeing how many big guys were entering the field, I don't think losing one would have been terrible. I'm glad you noticed that my curve doesn't include 3-drops because those, and tokens, are usually my main targets.

Your suggestions are fair as well. Into the Wilds is just something that I thought could help as a one-of, but after this I'm not sure it is entirely needed. I'll probably run it and see how it plays, and if I'd rather have the extra creature, I'll throw one in there. I can see running 4 Polukranos, World Eater s in this deck, and I tested with that for a while. I was worried that because he was a legendary creature though that he would sometimes do more harm than good by sitting on extra copies in my hand. That's why I decided to go with Mistcutter Hydra s alongside Polukranos because they come in huge and smash in fast. I'll certainly take those things into consideration though.

Great write-up. That game 1 was epic and make me want to play mono-green stompy stomp.

As for how to handle game 3: it depends on what you want the article to focus on, the playtest itself or the matchup. It's always more interesting to me to read about the matchup and how the two decks interacted. One doesn't learn much for a mana-screw or mana-flood game, unless it happens frequently and is therefore a sign that too few or two many lands are in the deck, respectively. Personally, I would play the game out as you did and then do a "just for fun" game 4 at the end. In the "just for fun" game let both decks keep a reasonable 7 card hand (no penalty for mulligan, but no excessive mulligans to get to the nut draw either) and play it out. Ultimately, no one here is keeping score and can only gain experience and knowledge about their deck by adding the 4th game (when appropriate).

Thanks for doing this series. I love reading the write-ups of games and for me it's much easier to digest than video replays.

As far as game 3 I am interested in how the decks interact with each other. I'd make a note that X deck got mana screwed and played literally 0 spells and then just re-game.

boston89: I'm glad to hear I've improved! I will certainly take your deck into consideration when choosing the next challenge. And as much as I appreciate the help, I've actually enjoyed these so much that they seem less like work and more like fun :D

thePESSIMIST: Thanks for the input! Okay, so for you and anyone else who is curious, here is how I typically make my decision: Usually, a day or two before I plan on making the writeup I will come onto the previous article and open every entry into a separate tab. I then compare the different entries from each archetype for that which I find to be the most powerful/most interesting. And lastly, I decide which archetype I would like to face next out of the choices I have. This is the importance of making sure the entry is on here instead of my wall. I rarely remember to check my wall for entries when doing this.

It's also important to note that I'm doing this series as a method of teaching others about the standard competitive environment. Thus, decks who are obviously altered due to cost or not having cards available are usually not selected or asked to be changed to what they would have been if money was not an issue. Going against a 3-color deck with all guildgates and no shocks, for example, will likely not get selected since it would be insufficient in the testing purposes of this article.

And lastly, if someone reading this has posted a deck in a previous article and still want to be used, post it again! It's fairly difficult to go to every previous showdown and accumulate all the other entries. If you really want to be on here please do me a big favor and continue to spam that deck on each article you read until it's chosen. Not even joking.

Apoptosis: I really like this idea. I think I'll be doing this from now on because I also felt like I was just wasting everyone's time with that last game. I just didn't want someone to think I was being unfair to the opponent in whatever way. And I'll be sure to check your deck out, man.

Anyway, about the third game, I agree with Apoptosis. It's a good way to still play out a third game, since nobody really learns anything when the mana base is skewed for that game.

Playing out the 3rd game even with a marginal hand can teach a valuable lesson. When is a two land hand bad or not? For what kind of decks? What kind of matchups? When is a 5 land hand not a keeper? Knowing what you're up against and whether you're on the play or the draw makes all of the difference. For example, with my esper control deck listed above: if I know I'm playing another control deck that will develop slowly I might keep a 5 land hand with no kill spells. But if I'm playing aggro, I know I need a hand that can address early threats (although no one can stop 3 Worldspine Wurm by T6), or will get me that T4 wrath. So there can be information learned by playing a hand where you mulligan'ed to 5, I've won games in those situtations, and it's worth playing out. But, 95% of the time you'll learn nothing other then mana-screw or -flood sucks ass, and playing that 4th "for fun" game will be more educational. But never just scoop the game 3 if you have to take multiple mulligans, fight it out to the death!

P.S. I just bought 3 Worldspine Wurm on eBay, they may never see standard play. But will definitely be used in some kitchen table stomp fests. Love it!

I have really been enjoying your Showdown series so far. I really enjoy seeing this kind of interaction between users on this site and each of your match ups so far have been pretty solid. I really enjoyed your last one against the greed deck. Stompy green ramp decks are a favorite of mine so I like how that one ended up.

I have an interesting challenge for your deck if you would like to give it a shot. My esper project that focuses on taking cards from my opponent might be a good match up to your deck. It has a few similar cards as a normal esper control deck but a lot of the mechanics are used quite differently and the win conditions are based on what my opponent is playing. It might be a fun one.

@Spootyone: If that's the case, then I'll submit a deck for the challenge that I've seen in varying degrees a lot: Dega. I uploaded it to T/O yesterday, and I think the server's glitchy because of how the deck looks, but still worth a shot.

As usual, a great writeup. I would say the only recommendation I have is just try to catch all of the cards you can in the double bracket tags. It makes things a little bit easier to read and helps people who might not know the cards as well. You do a great job already, and I'm sure it can be tiring to try to keep track of them all while writing it up, but maybe put a notepad file that has the cards listed by tags so you can copy & paste them? (For example "[ [Fiendslayer Paladin] ]" without the quotes and spaces and then just c&p it however much you need).

In terms of the third game, as much as it sucks to have a deck draw poorly or get mana screwed (believe me, I know that feel =P), it's the only honest way to playtest, and as Apoptosis said, it teaches a good lesson to new players (and reminds old ones, too). Also, some decks CAN survive with a 1 land starting hand. Plus you want to know limitations, so it's good to keep dumb hands sometimes and see what would happen if you really had to keep that hand; how well can your deck recover from mana screw?

Also, I've noticed a couple people who wish to begin doing what I'm doing here. I say go for it! I am by no means trying to hog the article section haha. If you really want to avoid "stealing" the readers I have you could always post in between my articles. That way people have them available at different times in the week :) Again, it's totally your call.

Again, well written insightful article. I'm going to suggest that in instances of game 3, play through the game just as you did. It's more realistic. That helps in my view. Playing a game 4 "for fun" afterwards though I think you should do as well. (I'm greedy, I want both...). Like mentioned above I like the realism of getting mana-screwed but I have learned so much from these articles I'd really like that 4th game. Honestly have learned a lot from you doing this. I attribute these articles for my placing 20-32/32 each FNM to 13/30 recently. Thank you.

To those of you who keeps tabs on my deck (you crazy people :P):

I feel as though change is coming. I think I may rebuild this deck a tiny bit tonight. I'm finding things not to work so well in the metagame, so I'm going to take another good look at my options in G/W mid and will post the results here after some initial testing. Although unusual, I've found that it performs best on the draw instead of on the play. Also, please ignore Vile Rebirth (exile it at the beginning of each match), it's only in the deck to trick T/O into generating Zombie tokens.

My biggest problem with your article is that you often don't link cards. I realize that you want to abbreviate, but every now and then I find myself scrolling up to read what the opening hand was so I can see what some card does.

Also, you could try my deck if you want. It's boros heroic super agro. Very easy to play. I even added a sideboard, though I'm not sure how much it would be needed against your deck.

By the way, how does one go about starting to write articles? I have asked for people to submit their competitive standard lists for me to playtest against also...mostly for my own benefit so I can "run the gauntlet" with playtesting on here BEFORE going to tournaments. It has helped me game alot
