This week I’ve had some great ideas for upcoming issues, I’ve got a two headed giant match in the works, I’m going to be having a rematch with
PrinceOfNeurosis
Now that both our brews have been edited and changed for the better, and I’ve finalized my details in other aspects of the article, such as how I would handle a larger influx of submitted decks by facing them off against each other thus knocking out two submissions a week, while spicing things up with standard two-headed giant and grudge matches from hell, the rematch of the century. Finally, depending on how long the series runs, there could even be an all-star series where all the winners come back and face off. Just thinking of fun ideas.
But first, this week we have
Junktown (T2split @FNM 7/26)

SCORE: 3 | 3 COMMENTS | 1922 VIEWS
Junktown was submitted by GureiSeion. The Key players in this deck include, Angel of Serenity, Blood Baron of Vizkopa, resto an thrag, and there’s one copy of Obzedat, Ghost Council. There’s a couple of garruks and two Sorin, Lord of Innistrad, cards to look out for, a timely Disciple of Bolas a turn after casting a Thragtusk gaining 5 and draw 5 then poop out a 3/3 beast.

This personal brew of mine was developed after reading many great issues of the Daily Dose while coming up with a Bolas brew of my own. I tried a few things out but ended up settling on Unexpected Results. When I ramp into it turn three after a Farseek, I can theoretically hit a turn 3 Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker or even Griselbrand
The rest of the deck is set up that it can maintain board control through kill spells. Putrefy, Dreadbore, Abrupt Decay, Far / Away. While maintain control on their side, til I get out my own Key players, Deathrite Shaman, Vampire Nighthawk, Olivia Voldaren, Ral Zarek and Vraska the Unseen
Lets get the action started!
Behgz=B, wins the flip, is on the play. Keeps opening hand of; Overgrown Tomb, 2x Woodland Cemetery, Deathrite Shaman, Chromatic Lantern, Putrefy, and Ral Zarek. Assuming the lantern doesn’t get killed with any kind of mainboard artifact hate, I should have a decent run.
GureiSeion=G, in italics. Keeps opening hand of; Overgrown Tomb, Godless Shrine, Woodland Cemetery, plains, Selesnya Charm, Sorin, Lord of Innistrad and Angel of Serenity. 4 land and sorin isn’t bad, with a util selesnya charm and a bomb in serenity only 3 land draws away.
B1: plays Overgrown Tomb shocks 2, lifes at B18/G20. Casts Deathrite Shaman. Passes.
G1: Draws Restoration Angel, plays Overgrown Tomb tapped, passes.
B2: Draws Olivia Voldaren plays Woodland Cemetery, moves to combat, swings with Deathrite Shaman for 1, no blocks, lifes at B18/G19. Passes.
G2: draws Woodland Cemetery, plays Godless Shrine tapped, passes.
B3: Draws Dreadbore, plays Woodland Cemetery, casts Chromatic Lantern. Move to combat, swing with Deathrite Shaman no blocks, lifes at B18/G18. Passes.
G3: Draws Vault of the Archangel plays Woodland Cemetery, passes.
B4: Draws Sulfur Falls plays Sulfur Falls, casts Ral Zarek using his plus 1 ability to tap GureiSeion white source Godless Shrine, in response he taps it to produce a white mana, Behgz then chooses to untap his Overgrown Tomb ral sitting at 5 loyalties. Behgz attempts to move to combat but before GureiSeion loses the white mana he produced he taps a green source and casts Selesnya Charm making a 2/2 vig knight token. Moves to combat, no combat, second main Behgz casts Dreadbore killing the knight token. Passes. (might be burning that Dreadbore a little early but I have few creatures and I don’t have them out yet so early board control is a good idea, especially with ral out).
G4: Draws Blood Baron of Vizkopa, plays Woodland Cemetery, casts Sorin, Lord of Innistrad makes a vamp token, sorin at 4 loyalties. Passes. (early PW’s, whose gonna pop off first).
B5: Draws Far / Away, activate Ral Zarek middle ability -2, deal three to target player, and redirect it to Sorin, Lord of Innistrad now down to 1 loyalty, ral at 3. Moves to combat, swings with Deathrite Shaman at Sorin, Lord of Innistrad, blocks with vamp token, gains 1, lifes at B18/G19. token dies. Second Main casts Olivia Voldaren. Passes.
G5: Draws Obzedat, Ghost Council plays Vault of the Archangel, casts Blood Baron of Vizkopa makes a vamp with Sorin, Lord of Innistrad now at 2 loyalties. Passes.
B6: Draws Woodland Cemetery plays Woodland Cemetery, activates Olivia Voldaren ping ability and shoots the vamp token, Olivia gets a +1 counter. Activates Ral Zarek -2 now at 1 loyalties, targeting sorin for 3 damage, killing him. Casts away of Far / Away target player sacs a creature, GureiSeion sacs Blood Baron of Vizkopa. Activates olivia’s ping ability to hit Deathrite Shaman making him a vamp, Olivia gets another +1. Moves to combat, swings with 5/5 Olivia Voldaren and deathrite for 6 total, no blocks, lifes at B18G13. Passes.
G6: Draws Avacyn's Pilgrim omg it’s the worst top deck of 2013, making his 2nd appearance two weeks in a row! Plays plains, casts Avacyn's Pilgrim and then casts Obzedat, Ghost Council gains 2, loses 2, lifes at B16/G15. Passes, At EoT GureiSeion flickers out ghost dad.
B7: draws Drowned Catacomb plays Drowned Catacomb, activates Olivia Voldaren ping ability hitting Avacyn's Pilgrim killing it and gaining Olivia a +1 counter, activates Ral Zarek +1 now at 2 loyalties, tapping himself then untapping Sulfur Falls Olivia pings deathrite getting her another +1 counter, she’s now a 7/7. Activate Deathrite Shaman exile target instant or sorcery ability, targeting Selesnya Charm in GureiSeion graveyard, he loses 2 life, lifes at B16/G13. Moves to Combat, swings with 7/7 Olivia Voldaren no blocks, lifes at B16/G6. Passes.
G7: at upkeep, Obzedat, Ghost Council blinks in, gains 2, loses 2, lifes at B14/G8. Draws swamp, plays swamp, moves to combat, swings with Obzedat, Ghost Council in response to declaring attackers, Behgz casts Putrefy targeting ghost dad, GureiSeion casts Restoration Angel targeting ghost dad, he blinks, gains 2, loses 2, lifes at B12/G10, Passes. At EoT, ghost dad flickers out.
B8: Draws Drowned Catacomb plays Drowned Catacomb, activates Deathrite Shaman exile spell ability, targeting Dreadbore in my own yard, loses 2, lifes at B12/G8. Activates Ral Zarek +1 ability, now at 3 loyalties, tapping Restoration Angel and untapping Deathrite Shaman then activating his ability again this time exiling Putrefy from my own yard, loses 2, lifes at B12/G6. Activates Olivia Voldaren ping ability 3 times targeting Restoration Angel Olivia gets +3 counters, she’s now at 10/10. Moves to Combat, Swings with Olivia Voldaren for game.
G next draw Loxodon Smiter.

Bolas' Meat-Bones
Behgz Wins.
Sideboard options for GureiSeion
3x Abrupt Decay, 3x Golgari Charm, 2x Pithing Needle, 2x Ratchet Bomb, 3x Rest in Peace, 2x Triumph of Ferocity.
Cards that will work in this match up: Abrupt Decay hits Deathrite Shaman and Vampire Nighthawk and Chromatic Lantern, so it makes sense to swap the 3x Selesnya Charm for 3x Abrupt Decay. Pithing Needle would hit Olivia Voldaren and Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, and Ral Zarek and Vraska the Unseen. Depending on how the game plays out, he can sit on this and play it once an aforementioned win-con hits the field. Which is bad news for Bolas. I would swap 1 Loxodon Smiter and 1 Centaur Healer for 2x Pithing Needle. Ratchet Bomb and Triumph of Ferocity could come in, but then again there were a lot of kill spells being thrown around so Golgari Charm giving regen might be good here, but there’s always the hard question of what to take out for all that extra stuff that might or might not end up helping.
Abrupt Decay and Pithing Needle are the two major picks in the sb right now, if he wins and pushes it to a game three, we can re-evaluate sb picks based on what we see in game two.
Sideboard options for Behgz
3x Appetite for Brains, 3x Devour Flesh, 1x Mizzium Mortars, 1x Rakdos Charm, 2x Skullcrack, 2x Slaughter Games, 2x Turn / Burn, 1x Vandalblast.
Cards that will work in this match up: Appetite for Brains is an obvious choice, and Abrupt Decay isn’t going to help much in the mid-game. So that’s a quick swap. Slaughter Games is another obvious choice, sub out 2x Vraska the Unseen she’s really just a fun card, no loss subbing her out. Turn / Burn is another great card, it can kill thrag without leaving a 3/3 behind, and it can kill Angel of Serenity while leaving the 3 exiled cards stuck in exile and not back to the hand. 1 Unexpected Results and 1 Dreadbore can come out to make room for 2x Turn / Burn.
Appetite for Brains, Turn / Burn, and Slaughter Games are the three major picks here in this match up. If we see anything else that holds us back in game two, we can re-adjust before a game three.
GureiSeion on the play, mulligans opening hand with only one land, keeps hand of; forest, Temple Garden, Woodland Cemetery, Avacyn's Pilgrim, Farseek, Angel of Serenity. Good solid ramp foundation, any creatures we can draw into can be cast as early as turn three hopefully drawing into a Thragtusk in the first three turns.
Behgz keeps opening hand of; Overgrown Tomb, Kessig Wolf Run, Farseek, Dreadbore, Vampire Nighthawk, Far / Away, amd Olivia Voldaren. This hand has a lot of potential, if I can draw into one land I’ll curve out. --
G1: plays Temple Garden shocks 2, lifes at G18/B20, casts Avacyn's Pilgrim, passes.
B1: Draws Rootbound Crag plays Overgrown Tomb tapped, passes.
G2: Draws Loxodon Smiter plays Woodland Cemetery casts Loxodon Smiter, passes.
B2: Draws Watery Grave plays Rootbound Crag casts Dreadbore targeting Loxodon Smiter. Passes. (yet again burning the Dreadbore early, this time on a more fitting early game threat0.
G3: Draws Restoration Angel plays forest, casts Farseek, finds Godless Shrine, moves to combat, swings with Avacyn's Pilgrim, no blocks, lifes at G18/B19. Passes.
B3: Draws Drowned Catacomb plays Drowned Catacomb, casts Vampire Nighthawk. Passes.
G4: Draws Disciple of Bolas. Passes. (Sitting on Angel of Serenity and Restoration Angel, just waiting for the last bit of land to get serenity out).
B4: Draws Stomping Ground plays Kessig Wolf Run casts Olivia Voldaren. Moves to combat, swings with Vampire Nighthawk, in response to attackers being declared, GureiSeion flashes in a Restoration Angel, he moves to blockers and blocks with Restoration Angel, they trade, lifes at G18/B21. Passes. (Vampire Nighthawk is a tricky bastard and it sucks having to crash a resto into it to stop it but its either that or watch nighthawk make a significant impact over the next few turns.)
G5: Draws Avacyn's Pilgrim casts Avacyn's Pilgrim. We could easily see both pilgrims get shot by Olivia next turn so we might as well use them to our advantage while their around. Casts Disciple of Bolas sacs a pilgrim, gains 1, draws 1, lifes at G19/B21, draws; Loxodon Smiter. Passes.
B5: Draws Woodland Cemetery plays Watery Grave tapped casts Farseek finds Steam Vents, activates Olivia Voldaren ping ability and shoots Avacyn's Pilgrim it dies, Olivia gets a +1 counter, moves to combat. Swings with 4/4 Olivia Voldaren no blocks, lifes at G15/B21. Passes.
G6: Draws Abrupt Decay casts Loxodon Smiter. Moves to combat, swings with Disciple of Bolas no blocks, lifes at G15/B19. Passes.
B6: Draws Watery Grave plays Stomping Ground shocks 2, lifes at G15/B17, activates Olivia Voldaren shoots Disciple of Bolas killing it, Olivia gets a +1 counter, activates Olivia again targeting Loxodon Smiter making him a vamp, Olivia gets another +1 counter, she’s now a 6/6. Moves to combat, swings for 6 in the air with Olivia Voldaren, no blocks, lifes at G9/B17. Passes.
G7: Draws Disciple of Bolas Great, no I can swing through for 4 then sac the smiter to the disciple and get some card advantage and hopefully ramp into the Angel of Serenity that’s been in hand the whole game. Moves to combat, swings with Loxodon Smiter in response to declaring attackers, Behgz casts away of Far / Away GureiSeion sacs Loxodon Smiter. Nothing left we can do this turn, Passes.
B7: Draws Rootbound Crag plays Woodland Cemetery. Activates Kessig Wolf Run x=5 targeting Olivia Voldaren making her an 11/6 flying trample. Moves to combat, swings with Olivia, no blocks. Good Game.
G next draw Woodland Cemetery.

Bolas' Meat-Bones
I’d like to get a chance to see what the deck can really do, I’m hoping it can pop off a little more this time around. Preferably in the Unexpected Results department.
Lavan=L: wins the toss, is on the play. Keeps opening hand of; mountain, Steam Vents 3x Delver of Secrets Flip, Shock, Artful Dodge. Three delvers is too good to pass up.
Behgz=B: keeps opening hand of; Stomping Ground, Rootbound Crag, Drowned Catacomb, Abrupt Decay, Putrefy, Unexpected Results, Vraska the Unseen. Pretty solid hand.
L1: plays Steam Vents shocks 2, lifes at L18/B20, casts Delver of Secrets Flip. Passes.
B1: Draws Far / Away plays Stomping Ground tapped, passes.
L2: Reveals and draws Izzet Charm, Delver flips, plays mountain, move to combat. Swings with Insectile Aberration Flip, no blocks, lifes at L18/B17. Second main, casts Delver of Secrets Flip, Passes. (this doesn’t feel like a Cyclops deck at all, this is an old fashioned Delver beat down.)
B2: Draws Overgrown Tomb plays Overgrown Tomb shocks 2, lifes at L18/B15, casts Abrupt Decay targeting Insectile Aberration Flip it dies, Passes.
L3: Draws Sulfur Falls plays Sulfur Falls, casts Delver of Secrets Flip moves to combat, swings with Delver of Secrets Flip for 1, no blocks, lifes at L18/B14. Passes.
B3: Draws Abrupt Decay, plays Drowned Catacomb, passes. At EoT, Lavan casts Izzet Charm drawing two then discarding two. Draws; island, Izzet Charm. Discards, Shock, and Artful Dodge. Passes.
L4: Reveals and draws Armed / Dangerous, both Delvers flip. Plays island, casts armed of Armed / Dangerous targeting an Insectile Aberration Flip, moves to combat. Swings with two Insectile Aberration Flip, in response Behgz casts Abrupt Decay in response Lavan casts Izzet Charm countering the non-creature Abrupt Decay. 11 Damage no blocks, lifes at L18/B3. Passes.
B4: Draws Farseek, plays Rootbound Crag, if I cast Unexpected Results I could top deck Griselbrand.. lets give it a shot! Casts Unexpected Results, shuffles, cuts, looks at top card; Deathrite Shaman the opposite of a Griselbrand haha o well, concede. Lets go to game 2. deck-large:izzet a Cyclops? Yes, yes it iz Lavan Wins.
Sideboard for Lavan: 2x Burning Earth, 2x Counterflux, 4x Dispel, 3x Frost Breath, 4x Pillar of Flame.
Cards that will work in this match up: Burning Earth has been popping up in a lot of sb’s all across the board, and here we are, this card would actually wreck the opposing deck as its made entirely of non-basic lands so they should come in, Turn / Burn while a great card, won’t make much of a difference in this match up, they can come out for the Burning Earth. Izzet Charm worked great as a util piece but if it had been any later in the game the leak-counter ability would not have posed a threat, I suggest swapping two charms for the extra 2x Counterflux in the sb. Dispel, Frost Breath, and Pillar of Flame won’t make much difference in the match.
Burning Earth and Counterflux will be coming in from the side.
Behgz sideboard options: 3x Appetite for Brains, 3x Devour Flesh, 1x Mizzium Mortars, 1x Rakdos Charm, 2x Skullcrack, 2x Slaughter Games, 2x Turn / Burn, 1x Vandalblast.
Cards that will work in this match up: The mainboard already has plenty of removal spells, but this deck came out fast, I’m thinking swap the Far / Away for 3x Devour Flesh. That will give me the control I need a turn sooner, being on the play should help too. I could bring in Slaughter Games but all I saw were Delvers, so I’ll leave them out, and if I push a game three, likely I will know something I can name with it then.
Devour Flesh is coming in to the maintain board to aid in controlling the board a turn sooner.
Behgz opening hand: Stomping Ground, Drowned Catacomb, 2x Abrupt Decay, Chromatic Lantern, Vampire Nighthawk, and Vraska the Unseen. Its about 1 land short but I have a feeling I can draw into it.
Lavan opening hand: 2x mountain, island, Sulfur Falls, Shock, Young Pyromancer, Counterflux. Not too bad if we can draw into that Burning Earth early enough. (*looking back, this might not have been an ideal hand, but 4 lands, a counterspell, and young pyromancer with a spell to trigger is a pretty good start, it doesn’t have any Cyclops but it’s a shame to throw the rest of the hand simply from a lack of 1 creature, a mully could be much less kind than what has already been drawn.)
B1: plays Stomping Ground tapped, passes.
L1: Draws island, plays mountain, passes.
B2: Draws Drowned Catacomb plays Drowned Catacomb tapped, passes.
L2: Draws Nivix Cyclops plays Sulfur Falls, casts Young Pyromancer. Passes. (there is the Cyclops missing from the opening hand).
B3: Draws Woodland Cemetery plays Woodland Cemetery casts Chromatic Lantern. Passes.
L3: Draws Armed / Dangerous, plays mountain, casts Nivix Cyclops. Moves to combat, swings with Young Pyromancer no blocks, lifes at B18/L20. Passes.
B4: Draws Stomping Ground plays Drowned Catacomb tapped, casts Abrupt Decay targeting Young Pyromancer it dies, passes.
L4: Draws island plays island, casts armed of Armed / Dangerous targeting Nivix Cyclops he triggers and gives himself +3/+0 and can attack this turn as though it didn’t have defender, it gets +1/+1 and gains double strike til end of turn. Casts Shock targeting Behgz then Nivix Cyclops gets another +3/+0, putting him at 8/5 double strike. Lifes at B16/L20. Moves to combat, swings with Nivix Cyclops in response Behgz casts Abrupt Decay killing the Cyclops. Passes. (pretty much went down as brutal as it looks, pumped everything he had into a Cyclops I never had any intention of letting get through, it was cool that it was exactly lethal had it gone uninterrupted.)
B5: Draws Putrefy plays Stomping Ground tapped, casts Vraska the Unseen activates her +1 ability, vraska now at 6 loyalties. Passes.
L5: Draws Armed / Dangerous plays mountain, passes.
B6: Draws Abrupt Decay casts Vampire Nighthawk It runs into Counterflux, activates Vraska the Unseen now at 7 loyalties.
L6: Draws Delver of Secrets Flip plays island, casts Delver of Secrets Flip passes, at EoT Behgz casts Abrupt Decay killing delver. Passes.
B7: Draws Olivia Voldaren activates Vraska the Unseen ultimate -7, gets three assassin tokens. Casts Olivia Voldaren, Passes.
L7: Draws Artful Dodge concedes.
That’s a Vraska assassin token win, if you haven’t seen that yet.

Behgz Wins.
Game 3, sb choices stay the same. (granted, I could bring in those Slaughter Games to take out the Cyclops, but he could resolve one on T3 and then slaughter games is hosed.)
Lavan opening hand; island, Sulfur Falls, Artful Dodge, Shock, Armed / Dangerous, 2x Nivix Cyclops. Fairly explosive opening hand, if the draws go right we can be swinging for lethal in no time.
Behgz opening hand; Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, Watery Grave, Deathrite Shaman, Farseek, Devour Flesh, Unexpected Results. Plenty of potential, no reason to gamble on a mulligan with this hand.
L1: plays island, passes.
B1: draws Abrupt Decay, plays Overgrown Tomb shocks 2, lifes at L20/B18. Casts Deathrite Shaman. Passes.
L2: Draws Think Twice plays Sulfur Falls, passes.
B2: Draws Farseek plays Stomping Ground shocks 2, lifes at L20/B16, casts Farseek finds a Steam Vents. Moves to combat, swings with Deathrite Shaman for 1, no blocks, lifes at L19/B16. Passes, at EoT Lavan casts Think Twice draws; Young Pyromancer. Passes.
L3: Draws Sulfur Falls plays Sulfur Falls casts Nivix Cyclops passes.
B3: Draws Drowned Catacomb plays Drowned Catacomb, activates Deathrite Shaman exile instant/sorcery ability, targets Think Twice in Lavan graveyard, he loses 2, lifes at L17/B16. Passes.
L4: Draws Sulfur Falls plays Sulfur Falls, casts armed of Armed / Dangerous targeting Nivix Cyclops then casts Shock targeting Behgz lifes at L17/B16, then casts Artful Dodge targeting Nivix Cyclops now getting +3/+0, +3/+0, +3/+0, +1/+1 making him an 11/5 double strike til end of turn. Moves to Combat, swings with Nivix Cyclops in response Behgz casts Devour Flesh, Lavan sacs the Cyclops and gains 5, lifes at L22/B16. Passes. (unfortunately for the Nivix Cyclops brew, he’s an easy target with a mass of cheap removal spells in standard that hit him, I would not be surprised to see him handled much the same as has happened these past two games if matched against any top 8 archetype in the current meta.)
B4: Draws Putrefy plays Watery Grave tapped, casts Farseek finding Overgrown Tomb, moves to combat. Swings with Deathrite Shaman for 1, no blocks lifes at L21/B16. Passes.
L5: draws mountain, plays mountain, casts Nivix Cyclops then casts Young Pyromancer now top decking, Passes. At EoT, Behgz casts Abrupt Decay targeting Nivix Cyclops it dies. Passes.
B5: Draws Woodland Cemetery plays Woodland Cemetery, casts Unexpected Results shuffles, cuts, reveals; Drowned Catacomb it enters untapped, casts Unexpected Results again because it returned to the a hand, shuffles, cuts, reveals; Unexpected Results plays Unexpected Results shuffles, cuts, reveals; Olivia Voldaren plays Olivia Voldaren Passes.
L6: Draws Burning Earth casts Burning Earth. Passes.
B6: draws Ral Zarek taps a green source for mana, burns 1, activates Deathrite Shaman exile creature card, targeting Nivix Cyclops in Lavan graveyard, gains 2, lifes at L21/B17. moves to combat, activates Olivia Voldaren ping ability, targeting Young Pyromancer mana burns self for 2, pyromancer dies from the ping. Olivia gets a +1 counter. Swing with Olivia in the air for 4, no blocks, lifes at L17/B15. Second main, tap four mana sources, burns 4, lifes at L17/B11. Casts Ral Zarek activates ral’s +1 ability, taps the opponents open land, then untap Olivia Voldaren. Ral at 5 loyalties. Passes.( that Burning Earth is a real pain in my ass, luckily, Ive got deathrite putting in work exiling creatures out of graveyards to gain me back an extra 1 life each turn.
L7: Draws Armed / Dangerous passes.
B7: Draws Unexpected Results, taps 1 green source, burns 1, activates Deathrite Shaman exile creature, targeting Nivix Cyclops in Lavan graveyard, gains 2, lifes at L17/B12. tap 2 land sources, burns 2, Activates Olivia Voldaren ping ability, hitting Deathrite Shaman Olivia gets a +1 counter, now a 5/5, moves to combat, swings with Olivia for 5, no blocks, lifes at L12/B10. Second Main, Activates Ral Zarek -2 ability burning Lavan for 3, lifes at L9/B10. ral now at 3 loyalties. Passes.
L8: Draws mountain, plays mountain. Lethal on the board, Olivia at 5/5, ral zarek can shoot for another 3, and deathrite can get in for the last one. Conceds.

There’s about 10 submissions on the waiting list, Ill match them head to head so I should be able to get through them in 5 or less issues by mid September, bear that in mind if submitting a new deck from here on.

btw, vraska's assasin wins are hilariously awesome. Saw one at this past FNM. a buddy of mine won with the assassin while the other guy was sitting at 40+ life. It was awesome.

Very true about the abrupt decay. Hope that was the only play error.

Interesting matchup for Junktown, as it's not very used to facing anything that's not aggro or straight-up midrange.
I do have a word about sideboarding, though. I apologize for wordiness.Disciple of Bolas users take note here: You never want to leave her in against a removal heavy deck. Four ways to kill my things in game 1 is two warning flags too many to risk Disciple of Bolas , lest I see that very scenario called "Best guy dies before Disciple hits the battlefield." Assuming decklists weren't shared beforehand, here's what I'd have done off of what I saw: Selesnya Charm stays in. Olivia Voldaren is a big, cocky thing. She'll be her own undoing with it. Plus, all three modes are relevant and I'd only seen two <3cmcs at that point to consider Abrupt Decay (One ramping into a four drop on turn four, no less). Triumph of Ferocity would pop in, since it forces control to be hasty with it's kill spells or let me gain card advantage over time. And yes, definitely Pithing Needle in response to everything relevant and her mom having an activated ability. Depending on which version of the deck you used, I'd probably nix a single Centaur Healer and Obzedat, Ghost Council or both Ghost Councils to make room for said Needles (Far / Away tips me off to instant-speed removal, and I don't trust that's the only form of it in those colors).
My two cents, anyway.
September 1, 2013 6:49 a.m.
Another enjoyable edition! I particularly enjoyed the second matchup. It's a bit of a shame such a powerful deck can be so easily thwarted with a timely removal spell.
September 1, 2013 9:39 p.m.
That would be the downfall of any Kiln-fiend esque deck Spootyone. It just gets demolished by removal. I'm still a huge fan of the decklist however. I'm really hoping some stuff gets printed in Theros that makes it stay viable in standard, but I might just have to change it up. Red/Blue will always be my favorite colors to play.
September 1, 2013 9:52 p.m.
yeah, defo need a counterspell handy for that timely death spell

Hey there, I'd like to enter my deck!
My Controlled Return to Standard
Keep in mind, it's on a budget, so it's not going to have any of the super expensive cards like Sphinx's Revelation , but I plan on playing it at FNM.
Thanks!
