Legacy Weapon Vol. 3

Turbo Depths

I’ve always had a soft spot for Dark Depths. I mean, who doesn’t want to play a

20/20 Flying, Indestructible Avatar token? I was a huge fan of Kennen Haas’ Jund

Depths list back at the beginning of the year, but was really quick to realize that it

occasionally just flat out lost to combo decks and Miracles. This variation at least

has disruption in the main and in the board to improve its matchup versus combo

decks, Stifle and board wipes. However, let’s call a spade and spade, Miracles

still has a lot of really efficient ways of dealing with your 20/20 Avatar and ANT can

still go over the top with a fair amount of ease. With that said, let’s take a look at

a deck that caught my eye last week during the SCG Legacy Open: Darin Minard’s

Turbo Depths.

Lands
Spells
Sideboard

1 Ethersworn Canonist
1 Misty Rainforest
4 Crop Rotation
1 Peacekeeper
2 Savannah
4 Force of Will
1 Qasali Pridemage
3 Thespian's Stage
4 Intuition
1 Sylvan Safekeeper
4 Tropical Island
2 Life from the Loam

4 Living Wish
1 Bojuka Bog
1 Wasteland
4 Ponder
1 Glacial Chasm
4 Windswept Heath
3 Supreme Verdict
1 Thespian's Stage
4 Flagstones of Trokair
4 Exploration
1 Karakas
1 Dark Depths
1 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
4 Flooded Strand
1 Dark Depths
1 Engineered Explosives

The Kill:

The Kill is pretty simple, play Dark Depths, play Thespian's Stage, copy Depths,

create a Marit Lage token and swing away. The engine to get you those cards in

hand is fairly basic for a Lands shell, but there is a little spice. You can tutor up

your combo with Intuition, you can use Crop Rotation to find pieces or even

Living Wish for them, hell, you can even play both combo pieces at the same time

if you have Exploration up.

Some of My Favorite Tricks:

Intuition for Life from the Loam, Dark Depths and Thespian's Stage.

Glacial Chasm with Life from the Loam plus any land with Exploration up.

Why this deck, Fluffy?

As I said previously, I have a soft spot for Dark Depths. However, on top of that,

this deck runs the cards that you want to play in Legacy. Brainstorm, force

of will, Ponder and Intuition find a nice home here with life from the

loam. While Intuition seems like it would be a Lands staple considering its

synergy with the rest of the deck, I’ve never seen it played before now (mostly

due to most Lands decks mainly being B/G). Running Blue means that you have

access to Brainstorm, Ponder, Force of Will and, one of the main engines

of the deck, Intuition. The result is a deck that can still take advantage of the

“fair” deck in the format while allowing for disruption against the unfair decks and

control matchups. It’s still far from perfect, but it looks pretty solid compared to

many other attempts at trying to make use of the Depths/Stage or Depths/Hexmage

interaction. Another thing that is unique to this list is that it runs three supreme

verdict to help you buy time against aggro decks and keep Delver decks off their

clock while providing an extra blue card to pitch to FoW if necessary.

The Sideboard:

Your sideboard is really more of a toolbox in this deck as its main goal is provide

you with a wish board for Living Wish, hence the amount of one ofs. Being

able to tutor for cards that help you in some of your worst matchups is certainly

handy. Grabbing an Ethersworn Canonist, Bojuka Bog, Qasali Pridemage

or Sylvan Safekeeper can win various matchups for you and cards like glacial

chasm, Karakas and The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale can buy you the extra

time you need to get your combo off. However, if need be, there are also combo

pieces in the side for you to tutor up as well. The only cards you actively side in are

Spell Pierce and Engineered Explosives.

I'm also surprised that no one used Intuition before. Like, I have very little experience with Legacy, but I know Gifts Ungiven is a similar card, and you search for Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth , Life from the Loam and Raven's Crime (and Tectonic Edge because why not?) in Modern to do dumb stuff with the graveyard.

It's largely a different situation, but I love how Life from the Loam works so well with Dark Depths . Even if Marit Lage is dealt with, you can get both Dark Depths and Thespian's Stage back. And Intuition is perfect for grabbing everything.

Cool deck! I have one question: You being a legacy person, how good is Extraction? I've also heard it being called "Iso-Seek". Is it competitive? I've seen a couple decks here and there that use this legacy strategy. I also wanted to ask the same thing about Canadian Threshold. Is it competitive?

Either way, I don't play legacy, but I love your articles! They're short and get right to the point. Very good read, as always! : )

@ Scorprix

Iso Seek or Extraction is something I have seen very little of. The idea behind the deck is... okay... kind of. I mean Wasteland ing a Tundra then extracting it is typically always going to be a good play... but RUG Delver does it too and has a much better gameplan. What happens if you hit Omni-tell or Sneak and Show? How about Miracles?

Speaking of RUG Delver. Canadian Threshold = RUG Delver = Tempo Thresh. Very competitive deck.

tl;dr: Try Shardless BUG instead of Iso-Seek. Canadian Threshold = RUG Delver = Tempo Thresh = sweet.

Thanks man! Good to know. If I were to make a semi-competitive budget legacy deck, do you think I could do it with Canadian Threshhold? I don't like burn since it is really weak against many decks post-sideboard.

@ Scorprix

Depends on your definition of "budget." I would consider something like True-Name Threshold (replace goyf with True-Name Nemesis ) viable, but it still requires Force of Will to function.
