Legacy Weapon Vol: 1
In this series I’ll be trying to bring about some discussion regarding interesting Legacy decks that don’t see a whole lot of play or random brews that I found interesting (there are plenty of them). I was initially going to start off with Greg Hatch’s Mono Blue Martyr, but then I saw something interesting on SCG Legacy coverage that I finally got around to watching yesterday (I was at the GP all weekend). That something interesting is a deck called Leylines.
Right now you’re probably all “what the hell are you talking about, Fluffy?” Well, let’s get down to it shall we?
Leylines is a quasi combo deck that abuses three cards, well, one type of card and two actual separate cards. Let’s take a look at the decklist that Chris Wolfmeyer ran last weekend.
1 Tree of Tales
4 Chancellor of the Annex
2 City of Brass
2 Banishing Light
4 Mana Confluence
1 Curse of Exhaustion
4 Serra's Sanctum
1 Ghostly Prison
1 Helm of Obedience
1 Oblivion Ring
4 Serum Powder
1 Rest in Peace
4 Leyline of Anticipation
1 Runed Halo
4 Leyline of Lifeforce
1 Stony Silence
4 Leyline of Punishment
1 Suppression Field
4 Leyline of Sanctity
2 Replenish
4 Leyline of the Meek
4 Leyline of the Void
4 Leyline of Vitality
4 Opalescence
3 Suppression Field
4 Crop Rotation
4 Enlightened Tutor
2 Idyllic Tutor
When researching the deck, I actually had to look up what the less well-known leylines actually did, but, for the most part, they’re just potential 4/4 bodies that don’t hurt you. The three leylines that actively do something useful for you in most of your matchups are Leyline of Sanctity to protect your hand, Leyline of Anticipation to cast things like Enlightened Tutor and Replenish at instant speed and Leyline of the Void to combo with Helm of Obedience, auto win against Dredge and turn Tarmogoyf into a 0/1.
The Kills:
The deck wins in hilarious fashion and potentially on turn one since leylines come into play on turn zero. You either mill your opponent out with Helm of Obedience and Leyline of the Void or you turn your turn zero leylines into 4/4 beaters with Opalescence, which you can cast with Serra's Sanctum on turn one if you have four or more enchantments in play.
The Engine:
Behind the kill is a set of three engines. The first is Serum Powder. Free mulligan so you can be aggressive with your hand? Sounds like a winner in this deck. The second is Enlightened Tutor and Idyllic Tutor basically fetch 90% of the deck, but, more importantly Enlightened Tutor fetches Helm of Obedience for the mill kill if you have Leyline of the Void up, hell, with Leyline of Anticipation in play, it does it on your opponent’s turn. The third is Crop Rotation for Serra's Sanctum to cast Opalescence with one land as long as you have four enchantments up, allowing you to swing with your now animated 4/4 leylines.
The Sideboard:
Chancellor of the Annex is really handy against your RUG and BUG Delver matchups and anything with Force of Will
O Ring effects help against Blood Moon, Gaddock Teag and Sneak and Show. This is really hilarious with Leyline of Anticipation.
Replenish is good as a fail safe against Wear / Tear and Golgari Charm.
A fourth Suppression Field to bump up your defense against Wasteland, shut down fetches and tax the hell out of any deck that relies on activated abilities.
Rest in Peace as insurance against Dredge and protection from Echoing Truth when going for the mill kill.
Curse of Exhaustion to help your matchup against ANT and Elves (from testing, I can tell you that Elves is a rough matchup).
Stony Silence to help against Aether Vial decks.
Runed Halo for the lolz.
Why this deck Fluffy?
Because I think it’s hilarious and potentially actually playable now that we have access to Mana Confluence and City of Brass in Legacy. This deck finds a unique way to abuse the ability of leylines to be free cast on turn zero and then finds interesting ways to protect you using more enchantments. It has a strong possibility of locking players out of the game and has adaptations for a lot of decks, even Elves (hello, Suppression Field). Most importantly, thanks to Serum Powder, you can aggressively mulligan (to seven no less) to get those four leylines, crop rotaion and a land in your opening hand.

Just watched the match and the amount of times he Serum Powder the second game almost made me die laughing. XD
I just love decks like this that do stupid things. >:3

If only Serra's Sanctum wasn't so damn expensive! Nice article by the way!

It's an interesting deck but unfortunately it got a lot of wins from opponents having no idea how to combat it. This was confirmed in various interviews after play. I feel like it's one of those decks where most of its success comes from the fact that no one plays it. If it does become popular there's plenty of sideboard tec that opponents could use.

The entire point was basically to open up discussion about innovations in various formats, I'm looking at some other decklists I've gotten my grubby little paws on for Modern as well. Clearly the table properties didn't transfer, I'll have to look into that before posting another.

Wouldn't they just need to include some sort of "enchantment have shrowd/hexproof" if meta decided to hate for it? Seems like a really strong build since it defies counters

They can but they're not the cheapest cards in terms of cmc, it will also lead to worse opening hands and dilute the overall focus of the deck. Besires Serenity , Back to Nature , Tranquil Grove , and Reverent Silence do it for very little mana.

I'd be for it. Maybe in the sb at least since no one is going to main deck hate to this deck ever

Pretty good article. I am only half way through, but I popped down here quickly to get something off my chest. Enlightened Tutor is an instant. There is no need at all for Leyline of Anticipation to cast it at instant speed.

@ Gidgetimer it was actually a double typo on my part. I screwed up the tutors and then swapped them, but forgot to change that part of the article. Idyllic Tutor is a sorcery but it only fetches enchantments, not artifacts.

Damn. If I could afford the format, this would now be my top interest to try.

I have a itch to make this work in modern...Don't judge me

Leylines, huh? Very very interesting!
This seems so innovative and intuitive...I'm with VampireArmy, I'd love to see this happen in Modern. Problem is that I don't think the tools exist in the format!
So cool, thanks for sharing, Fluffy!

Nice article fluffy! I'm just starting to get into legacy, and I'd love to see a tech on Stasis control, which is what I'm playing.

I have one question, tho.. how are you supposed to deal with cards like Cleanfall ?
August 5, 2014 5:20 a.m.
JakeHarlow says... #17
Yeah, if this got to be big in the meta, cards like Cleanfall , Back to Nature , Tempest of Light , Cleansing Meditation , and Paraselene would possibly see some SB play. Maybe decks with access to white would consider Fracturing Gust too! since it does double duty against Affinity.
Echoing Calm is a maybe? Hush and Purify are too expensive. Patrician's Scorn could see play inside a tempo build with white. Primeval Light might be solid in a mirror match.
Honestly, Serenity seems pretty ok against both Affinity and this. But I don't even know if Affinity is a thing in Legacy.
Hmmm......

Affinty is a thing. You just don't see it as often as you should since the entire competitive meta is flooded with delver decks, death blade decks, and insane combo decks
August 5, 2014 11:37 a.m.
I feel like Ensnaring Bridge would do VERY well in this deck. If half your opening hand is Leylines, then you have an almost empty hand on turn 1 making Ensnaring Bridge very powerful!

Hmmm I don't look at legacy much but I heard about this deck somewhere but I never bother to look but man now I want to try it out! >:O Thank you fluffy for the article this series is going to interesting for sure! :3
