Hello everyone!
First of all I would just like to very quickly apologise for not putting out as much content as I usually do. The reasons for this have been moving house and getting things ready in order to go back to university in a few weeks time. Both of these activities have sucked up my free time meaning that I have not been able to write as much as I would have hoped. However things appear to be clearing up again so I am confident that I can start producing a few features.
So today I wanted to pitch "The Prince of Pauper", which is something I have been giving serious thought to. Essentially the challenge is to collect one of every common in magic.
The rules are fairly simple:
- The card has to be legal in Vintage (that includes restricted)
- The card has to have been a common at its lowest rarity
- I will obtain one copy of that card (probably the least expensive version - no I am not paying $150 for a Lightning Bolt!)
- The card must be English
- The card must be in at least excellent (slightly played) condition
As I collect the cards I will produce content about my voyage. How much the cards cost, any ideas I've had for decks sparked by the cards, any interesting artworks, stories about how the cards have been used in the past, and other articles and/or videos that you, the readers, would find interesting.
Now, obviously this is a new idea and quite the commitment so I need to gauge interest first. I must stress at this point: I am going back to university and will therefore be a student. My purchasing power is not huge. If I were to embark on this journey donations would be greatly appreciated. Whilst the majority of the cards should be fine there will be some that may be problematic such as Three Visits (check that price!). Of course anything I receive, whether cards or money or anything else, will be paid back in huge thanks, personalised content, and credits in articles.
So, readers, what do you think? I have two strawpolls for you.
The first is simply: would you be interested in this challenge? Poll here
The second is: if I were to do the challenge what kind of content would you be interested in? Poll here (this one allows you to select multiple choices!)
...And it's as simple as that really. If there's sufficient interest I'll go ahead and produce the content that you ask me for, and if not, I won't!
If you are interested in the challenge, here's the first conundrum, with a brain teaser!
Various sources disagree on how many commons there are.
The MTGFamiliar app places it as: 5867 for Vintage, and 5864 for Legacy. Brain teaser - which 3 commons are legal in Vintage but banned in Legacy? Answers in the comments please!
Whereas Gatherer places it as: 5963 for Vintage, and 5965 for Legacy. I have no idea why Gatherer is saying there are more commons in Legacy than Vintage? Can anyone help me with this? Vintage should have 3 more cards legal than Legacy, not 2 less!

Brainstorm is legal in Legacy, but restricted in Vintage. Those kind of things might have something to do with it, if you strictly searched for "legal".

Yeah then you would expect 5 reserve list cards that were commons because that would give Vintage 5968 and Legacy 5965 (remember Vintage should have an extra 3 due to the bans in Legacy). But I can't find 5 reserve list commons, only 4.

Lotus Petal, Merchant Scroll, and Ponder are also commons legal in legacy, restricted in vintage.
This seems like a neat challenge, I look forward to hearing more about it.

AH! Merchant Scroll was coming up as an uncommon. That would be the missing 1.

It's a cool idea, but not something I would really be interested in. Best of luck if you do end up pursuing it.

It would be neat for weekly or bi-weekly updates on top tiered commons, as well as updates on how many have been obtained. It would also be awesome for some unique stories about how you obtained certain commons.

If you are collecting all the cards anyway, why not build a pauper cube? This format has is starting to pick up among cube draft enthusiasts. It's a pretty spikey environment with lots of close games.

I could run the project on after I've finished it and talk about building a cube!

It seems like a tremendous amount of work. I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort, honestly.

Be ready to get foil Chimney Imp, Storm Crow and other such things delivered to you. I'm on board for this, and am definitely willing to mail my commons to you. We can also finally photoshop you getting pelted by shitty commons.

UpsetYoMama - It both is and isnt. There are a few snags that need resolving and then from there it should be smooth sailing. Firstly I need a list of every common that i can follow and tick off, it also needs to be sortable by set so i can do it set by set. Ill probably use deckbox for this because it handles that kind of stuff really well. Once I have that i can buy completed common sets exceedingly cheaply on ebay etc. Some are like well under $5 for the entire set including shipping. Then i just tick off what i have and tell you guys about it with content.
It will be hard work but theres enough support in place for it to not be a total nightmare.

when it was first printed it didn't have a rarity so it counts as a common right?
August 9, 2016 9:04 p.m.
Some older sets didnt have rarity symbols or had unclear rarity symbols. In these cases its best to check gatherer for the official information. Black lotus is most definitely a rare or mythic depending on the set. Sometimes its best to ignore whats printed on the actual card, especially with older printings, because they made many mistakes back in the day. Gatherer has the correct info 99% of the time.
