Welcome one, welcome all!

Last week I began my Khans of Tarkir article and only managed to fit half the good stuff into there, so here we are to, to quote a well known fighting game, FINISH HIM.

Today we'll have a few Black creatures who don't seem very friendly, some dogs that trained themselves into master markshounds, and a really, really cool bird.

It's time to finish off the Khans of Tarkir.

10: Bellowing Saddlebrute

The only thing sharper than a Saddlebrute's blades are their victim's cries for help.

These guys looks like mean MoFos so I wanted to give them at least a cool flavor.

9: Longshot Squad

"Let us prove to our enemies that our eyes are as sharp as our noses!"

Hounds are known for their noses, so to flip the script and make them archers was... weird.

8: Kheru Lich Lord

When you knock on death's door, you never quite know who is going to answer.

I struggled on this flavor a bit, but I ended up thinking about knocking on deaths door and that was pretty much it.

7: Mer-Ek Nightblade

The size of a Nightblade's sword is not as important as the poison on its tip.

I can just imagine this big guy tipping his blades with poison so this one was a bit easy.

6: Narset, Enlightened Master

"My greatest curiosities are the ones I have yet to discover."

Narset comes off as very knowledge hungry and smart if not a bit juvenile so doing her flavor is hard but enjoyable.

5: Mardu Skullhunter

"What good is a hunt without the trophy?"

I just picture him as someone who needs to claim a trophy from each hunt, kind of like Predator.

4: Dig Through Time

The memories of the past can always influence the moments of the future.

I LOVE the flavor on these delve spells. Such a great mechanic.

3: See the Unwritten

Only a sage can see the future, and only a sage would refuse.

This brings up the age old conundrum of if you could see the future, would you want to know it? Personally, I'd say no thanks.

2: Suspension Field

There is no greater prison than a place where you watch the world go on without you.

In response to my Journey to Nowhere flavor where it seemed a little too black, I wanted another crack to give a traditional white effect a whiter feel.

1: Ashcloud Phoenix

The world shook with ferocity as the sky clouded with ash, but the only thing available to see was flame and fury.

I like the idea of a flame so luminous that even in the darkest ash it could be seen, which I think is fitting for a Phoenix.

Time to announce the winner of last week's reader challenge. There were multiple entries that I wanted to win, but there can only be one. So, congrats Cipher001! (Slightly edited)

Crater's Claws

"Waking a mountain from its slumber is a lot like waking a dragon. While it slumbers in the earth below, you have nothing to fear. But when awakened, it claws to the surface with such fury that you would think that all the world had dressed itself in flame." -Sarkhan the Dragonspeaker

This week's challenge is actually a card I almost included in the main article, but I wanted to see what you all could come up with. Good luck:

Butcher of the Horde

This article is a follow-up to Flavor Kitchen: Khans of Tarkir Part 1 The next article in this series is Flavor Kitchen: Innistrad Part 1

Butcher of the Horde:

The Mardu once rode saddle to saddle into war against the dragons, but gone are those days and with them the honor of the Horde.

Congratulations Cipher001!

"Rest easy knowing your sacrifice will aid a greater cause...mine." - The Butcher

"We could not understand how or why The Butcher would devour his own allies until he broke down our gates and ravaged our villages as if he didn't even notice our presence"

"Mardu's loyalty is unsurpassed by any other tribe. They will bow, fight, and die to ensure our victory."

Cipher001 Nice work!

Four wings to honor the long-gone dragons and four arms to honor the Mardu Horde join in one force of malevolence and destruction.

Anyone have a vote for the next set I cover?

Deco_y - The first innistrad set! I feel like that set has some pretty cool cards that have dark concepts that I feel would be great for flavor texts. And there is absolutely no bias that it was the first set that I ever played in Magic, and it has my favorite flavor text to date: Army of the Damned.

I agree with doing the first Innistrad. It has deep, recognizable flavor and a lot of opportunities to develop it.

In the interest of a contrary opinion, Theros has a very strikingly beautiful art style while the greek inspirations could yield some creative references.

"The victims are mauled, tenderized, prepared and consumed, not necessarily in that order" - Terek, Tarkir Historian

JacctheInsomniac - While I definitely vote for the first innistrad to do first, I do agree with you that Theros would be a great set to do. While the cards overall were not impressive, I did love the theme. I thought the concept was done extremely well.

"To conquer is to eat." This is the first of three Edicts of Ilagra. Mardu demons don't bother remembering the other two.

I rocked Butcher of the Horde in a Mardu Allies deck that did well at FNM.

I think his flavour text would read:

Be wary if he invites you over for dinner.

I honestly think Argy's is in the running to win this.

Thanks for choosing my selection, Deco_y! I rather like your flavor text for Kheru Lich Lord and Suspension Field. You did a rather good job in making flavor text for white exile there, imo. I also approve of the slight edit you made to my selection; "waking" keeps up with parallelism and the word "poking" just served to detract from the rest of the tone with its whimsical implications.

Not sure if I'll post this week, but I do rather like Pheardemons and Argy's posts. Given that Butcher of the Horde isn't legendary and therefore probably wouldn't be referred to specifically in flavor text, I'd give it to Argy for now. It's a pretty quick edit though, just cutting out the part that says who it's from.

Hmm... I suppose I will make a post. How about "A demon never understates the beauty of sacrifice. It just makes sure that the sacrifice is never its own."

Also as an FYI to everyone, tonights article is being delayed until tomorrow. The file magically corrupted somehow so I have to re-do the Flavor texts. So watch for that .
