It works because any change in life total is seen as gaining or losing that much life.Say you have a Tainted Remedy + Tree of Perdition on the field, opponent has 20 life.

1: Tap your tree, tree gets 20 toughness, opponent's life goes to 13.

2: Tap tree again. Tree goes to 13 toughness. Opponent's life tries to go to 20, but Tainted Remedy triggers and replaces them gaining 7 life with them losing 7 life. Opponent ends up at 13-7=6.

3: Tap tree again. Tree goes to 6 toughness. Opponent again tries to go up to 13 life, but the +7 to their life total is replaced with a -7 instead. Opponent ends up at 6-7=-1 life.
