Description

My 630-card unpowered cube is designed with an eye towards maximizing archetype diversity to create fun, varied gameplay. The typical cube theaters/archetypes of aggro, tempo, midrange, control, reanimator, ramp, and cheater are included. Aggro is supported in red, black, white, and a little in green. The following more niche archetypes are also strongly supported: blink, kiki combo, stax, wildfire, big grixis, fires (haste), and turboland. There is moderate support for super ramp, zombies, and dredge. Some archetypes were triaged and not included such as: zoo, heavy black, mill, spells matter, artifact.dec, and storm.

The list is strongly based on popular cube staples, with the following cards excluded for power level: Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, Sol Ring, Mox Sapphire, Mox Pearl, Mox Jet, Mox Emerald, Mox Ruby, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Grim Monolith, Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Umezawa's Jitte, Library of Alexandria, Elspeth, Knight-Errant, Mana Drain, Mind Twist, Jace, Memory Adept, Tinker, Gifts Given

A few broken cards are still included because I think they improve the metagame, but they are on the cusp of exclusion: Balance, Entomb, Armageddon, Ravages of War, Recurring Nightmare, Strip Mine, Wurmcoil Engine, Skullclamp, Upheaval, Batterskull

I include as many build-around type cards as I think can be supported: Awakening Zone, Bazaar of Baghdad, Birthing Pod, Braids, Cabal Minion, Burning of Xinye, Crucible of Worlds, Cruel Ultimatum, Crystal Shard, Dark Confidant, Erratic Portal, Fastbond, Fauna Shaman, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Living Death, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Mimic Vat, Moat, Nether Void, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, Oath of Ghouls, Opposition, Oversold Cemetery, Palinchron, Reveillark, Smokestack, Survival of the Fittest, The Abyss, Upheaval, Venser, the Sojourner, Wildfire.

Cheater cards can also be built around: Oath of Druids, Eureka, Shelldock Isle, Tooth and Nail, Natural Order, Pattern of Rebirth, Show and Tell, Channel, Sneak Attack

2-card combos: Triskelion + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed; Hive Mind + Pact of Negation or Slaughter Pact; Basalt Monolith + Wake Thrasher; Kiki Jiki, Mirror Breaker or Splinter Twin + Pestermite, Deceiver Exarch, Restoration Angel, or Zealous Conscripts; Palinchron + Deadeye Navigator, Phantasmal Image, Mirari's Wake, Recurring Nightmare, or Sneak Attack.

I tune this cube to meet certain targets for density of mana fixing, monocolor, colorless, and multicolor cards as well as appropriate mana curves and creature:spell ratios both within colors and in the cube as a whole. The densities that I shoot for are based on analyses of these densities in about 20 popular and successful cubes. After archetype support and card density considerations are taken into account, I rely heavily on pick order data calculated from drafts.in draft data to make final card selections, with the aim to put cards in that people want to draft and make the decisions as interesting as possible.
