Description

4x Commons and uncommons cube designed for easy play by casual players. The goal is a core set like feel that is more powerful.

12-01-13 - Completed Fairly Major overhaul of cube based on play experiences. Increased cube size to 540 to allow for up to 12 drafters or 2 drafts for 6 players.

I draft with 15 card boosters and each pack gets 1 color fixing non-basic land. I randomly insert 1 of each of the following into a pack. (three copies of each total possible in a draft)

Each 2 color guildgate, Terramorphic Expanse, and Evolving Wilds.

Blue - Tempo, card draw, and flyers.

Black - Creature removal, discard, and reanimation.

Red - Burn & aggressive creatures.

White - Tokens, Anthem effects.

Green - Ramp, color fixing and fatties.

Artifacts - Generic effects to fill out needs in a variety of strategies.

Updates: Removed Brain Freeze and storm package. Blue probably best color now. Upgraded White with rares because was weakest color. Honor of the Pure and Day of Judgment added to improve both aggro and control. Added Icy Manipulator to replace Chromatic Star from storm package and to compliment inclusion of Day of Judgment . Opportunity replaces Trinket Mage as 1 or less cost artifact count goes down, also an attempt to give players reason to draft a higher curve.

Updates: Overhauled cube to increase size to 540 to accommodate more drafters, make pack building more mathematically streamlined. Removed Faerie package from blue as part of a seven card swap, designed to help make blue a better splash color and limit its oppressive levels of counter magic. Minor adjustments to other colors.

Updates:

Out

Mogg Flunkies - Too much removal in non-green matchups to be a reliable attacker, green creatures outclass its size too quickly.

Reckless Abandon - Too situational, and just outclassed by other burn spells.

Blastoderm - Lack of synergy with majority of green strategies.

Bloodbraid Elf - Very underwhelming in the RGx decks. Too difficult to draft a deck where both the cascade and the 3/2 haste body were consistently worth a card.

In

Goblin Guide - Rare added to improve viability of aggro. There really is no card rare or otherwise that compares to what this does, and I think quality 1 drops are the only way to make aggro viable in such a removal and value intense format.

Lightning Mauler - Added to improve viability of aggro.

Roar of the Wurm - A good fit for multiple deck archetypes. Resilience against discard and removal.

Ghor-Clan Rampager - Versatile, well costed threat, good in aggro, midrange, and ramp strategies (The three main strategies of RG decks).

More Updates:

Gwyllion Hedge-Mage replaces Beckon Apparition - Was pretty handily the worst card in the cube. Not stoked by the hedgemage as its power level in mono-black or whiteless black splashes is very low. But there is no way it is worse than Beckon Apparition.

Sturdy Hatchling replaces Wistful Selkie - this color combo has depressingly terrible hybrid commons and uncommons. The Selkie's color intense cost made it a difficult splash and there were no decks in which the card draw was good enough to make up for the mediocre body. I'll give the hatchling a try as it could be, at the very least, a potent sideboard card against removal heavy decks.

Mulldrifter replaces Opportunity - Opportunity is just way to slow and Blue has become much more tempo based than controlling. Being able to draw cards while simultaneously deploy even a modest threat will hopefully be more of a fit to the viable blue strategies. Green ramp decks were enough to get to six easily but they were better paired with any of the other three colors because of better removal options, and the double blue cost made Opportunity too difficult to cast in the three color base-green decks. I also haven't seen any decks that would not prefer Foresee over Opportunity , which I don't believe will be the case with Mulldrifter .
