Description

This is my first attempt at an Uncommon Cube. Every card is, or has been, printed as an uncommon. This was built as a 12-player cube, but has since swelled to become a 16 player cube, allowing for 2-Headed Giant drafts at 8 teams. The goal was to play the best/most interesting/craziest uncommons from Magic's history.

Archetypes

There is a slight bias toward low CMC strategies in this cube, with White Weenie, Red Aggro, Black Suicide Aggro and various two-colour aggro strategies being workable.

Burn is a viable strategy, particularly for any player drafting the Isochron Scepter.

Graveyard-based play is supported, with several cards having Dredge and other GY mechanics. Wonder is a particularly strong card which could win games.

Where possible I've tried to incorporate tribal themes into the cube. Merfolk, Zombies, Humans, Soldiers, Elementals, Elves, Beasts and Goblins are all well represented. Merfolk looks particularly strong, with Merrow Reejerey doing a lot of work and Fish staple Aether Vialfoil in the cube. Most importantly, 5-colour Slivers are a playable deck here (I really wanted to do that!). Harmonic Sliver looks particularly strong, though with Slivers it's all about the massive overrun. I deliberately avoided having too many anthem effects there; I want them playable, not rampant...

Midrange is possible, with some big Eldrazi to ramp into as apex threats, though creature-based ramp is relatively scarce in here. Having said that, Burnished Hart and Yavimaya Elder are both very efficient cards.

Control seems playable, there are certainly enough restrictive/limiting elements in monoblue, Dimir, Azorius and Esper to make it worth chasing. Monowhite seems to have some control possibilities, as does Orzhov. Certainly cards like Banishing Light, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares and Banishing Stroke make white a tempting colour choice. Doom Blade, Go for the Throat and Ultimate Price make black worth playing too.

Some cards have slightly warped the cube around themselves as I wanted to include them badly enough to push for them. Examples of this:

Loyal Retainers, which dictated I include a number of uncommon legendary creatures. I particularly like having Sosuke, Son of Seshiro and Sachi, Daughter of Seshiro in here together. The snake boost made me add an extra snake or two just to have more tribal. ALL THE TRIBES!

Isochron Scepter, which led to the inclusion of the RTR charm cycle to make it work, as well as a few more 2-drop instants. It's that which led to a 2:1 ratio of instants to sorceries.

Knight of the Kitchen Sink A, which has lead to more Un-set cards and me trawling for as many early copies of cards (so, white-bordered) as I can find.

War of the Spark naturally led to all 20 uncommon walkers joining the cube.

I considered having Library of Alexandria and Bazaar of Baghdad in here, but decided not to for two reasons.

1) Holy crap are they expensive

2) They're not really uncommons; under the old rules they were "uncommon", but by modern standards that meant "rare"
