Jsusx and JundGrixisNayaBantEsper, here's the budget tokens deck. The final price, including sideboard is roughly 215 dollars.

Strike that, closer to 130 dollars.

Like it. May steal as I would like to have a couple of budget modern choices to choose from.

Just curious, but how well would Despise work in the Side. I know Duress is for the delver desk out there, but is midrange used a decent amount?

You'll almost always get more use out of Duress. There are a few matches where Despise might be more useful, but overall I would keep Duress in the side. And I'm glad you like it!

One more question, until I can get ahold of the Tidehollow Sculler, would it be better to go with Brain Maggot or take a soul sisters approach?

I would keep the maggot. Control is more valuable than life gain for tokens. It can be the difference of gaining a few life vs taking out a key part in a combo or a Supreme Verdict.

I also noticed you switching back and forth on Elspeth and Sorin on your non budget version. Is Elspeth THAT much better, or would The Lord of Innistrad do okay in the spot if I didn't want to remove my Elspeths from the deck they are currently in. Sorry for the game of 20 questions, jus trying to figure out how I want to go about building this deck

Elspeth is definitely the superior choice. Sorin would be an acceptable replacement, but keep in mind he dies really easily and can often times be a 4 Mana anthem. Your other option for the 4 cmc spot is Hero of Bladehold. And ask away! I'll gladly help. And no problem!

I know she's not really a budget choice and has a higher cmc, but have you considered replacing Elspeth, Knight-Errant with Elspeth, Sun's Champion?

Rocknj06 says... #11

Suns champion is just too slow for modern

January 3, 2015 9:38 p.m.

xzzane says... #12

Suns champion is far too slow. Knight errant is much better.

Why the single Gather the Townsfolk over a second Honor of the Pure?

January 3, 2015 9:44 p.m.

xzzane says... #14

4-5 anthems is optimal for b/w tokens. The single Gather the Townsfolk is a replacement for Sword of Fire and Ice in case of fateful hour.

Is Castigate a viable option to replace Duress? I have a slightly improved Modern Event Deck that im trying to improve further before i post a decklist. Marsh Flats and Thoughtseize are out of my price range currently so I'm looking at other options. I also thought about running Precinct Captain, is that reaching to far? thoughts?

January 4, 2015 3:06 a.m.

xzzane says... #16

Duress is better because we already have Tidehollow Sculler in this build. Duress fits into the curve better than Castigate would. And Precinct Captain is a no go. Not worth the slot.

thanks, for the input, I posted my build, got to get some Godless Shrine's to shore up the mana base and then it will get play tested a bit more.

To be more reliable against wraith effects and control I think that 2Honor of the Pure and 2Intangible Virtue should be enough.

You can use the slots to add some auto win token shiter like Brimaz, King of Oreskos or Hero of Bladehold. Also Bitterblossom may be considered.

This deck lags some resilience as you don't have card draw and you play 23 lands without fetch-lands.

Jsusx says... #20

So fetchlands bring a deck resilence ?!?!??I think he didnt add brimaz and hero for a reason. Modern is one of the removal-strongest formats and in most cases brimaz/hero are just a wasted turn 3/4.

January 10, 2015 8:21 a.m.

wishp says... #21

Well you draw less lands, maths and stuff you know.I should remember you that both Brimaz, King of Oreskos and Hero of Bladehold don't die to Lightning Bolt so reclaims at least a Path to Exile.

January 10, 2015 8:35 a.m.

xzzane says... #22

Neither brimaz nor hero were good enough to make it into my truely competitive version. They have no place here either. This is a budget version, so no fetches. Bitterblossom is not good for b/w tokens. The resilience you claim this is lacking is there in the form of my various sources of hand disruption.

What I'm saying is that with 23 lands such a low curve and no draw engine your likely to lose against any kind of control deck if the game goes long.

Well, in your deck version there is at least Sword of Fire and Ice.

I respect your opinion about my suggestions but don't you feel sometimes you draught in lands?

January 10, 2015 10:43 a.m.

xzzane says... #24

23 lands is optimal. I've tried running 22 before and I encountered Mana problems too often. And as to my losing that is hardly the case.
