Dun imo is better than sidisi for a number of reasons. Main one being, this deck is already so consistent, that running sidisi as the general is a waste, she's just another tutor, and with the add of dark petition from origins, I feel as the general she's not needed. Dun can get back all your cards to abuse over and over again, as well as punish opponents who counter a black card, or destroy your permanents. In match ups where you are playing better decks or more skilled players, dun comes in handy a lot more than sidisi. It's personal preference on what you decide, but I think you have to look at the overall power of dun and how more versatile he is compared to sidisi

Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth dude you cant use this one... rings of brighthearth can be used only once per turn... so you cant use also this combo: Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth + Sensei's Divining Top and also this Necropotence + Rings of Brighthearth + Soul Conduit

SopiSVK What? You can use Rings of Brighthearth as many times as you like. You can use it once per ability, if that's what you meant? Maybe you were thinking of The Chain Veil?

This deck is so fun!! I have a current one here http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/xiahou-dun-updated-edh/ and i was hoping to make it more like yours. Without creating too huge of a money investment, it'd mean the world to me if you could give me indepth advice and improvements to make it as cut throat as yours. Thanks you!!

Hey, have you ever tried running Ill-Gotten Gains in this deck?

olbuddyolpal I REALLY LOVE THIS DECK. This is everything I love about mono black and control in one package. +1 from me! If you could take a look at my deck Hide Your Creatures, Hide Your Wife, I would really appreciate it

Lethal Vapors + Pithing Needle

Since Pithing Needle doesn't allow the activated mana abilites, this combo would not work. According to TWOC:

"Activated abilities include a colon and are written in the form [cost]: [effect]. Triggered abilities and static abilities of the named card work normally."

becuase Lethal Vapors's ability is: :Destroy Lethal Vapors. You skip your next turn. Any player may play this ability.

It is technically a mana ability. So, unfortunately, this combination doesn't work.

HOWEVER...

Lethal Vapors's Activated ability does not respond to the effect of Pithing Needle, because TWOC clearly states that triggered and static abilities are not affected by Pithing Needle's ability.

SO, in short, and to be curt, Pithing Needle, when used on Lethal Vapors does absolutely nothing. I love the deck and keep finding new combos every time I mess with it, but this combo specifically occurred to me, and after a bit of research, it seems to be a somewhat common misconception.

also, because this deck barely relies on combat damage, I wanted to go ahead and suggest Glacial Chasm.

It seems perfect, seeing as how there aren't many win cons aside from Army of the Damned that involve combat damage.

Sicohippy: The activated ability on Lethal Vapors is not a mana ability, it is just a standard activated ability. the cost to activate it is . the effect is that Lethal Vapors is destroyed and you skip your next turn. I don't know where you're getting that this is a mana ability but that's incorrect.

As such, the interaction between Lethal Vapors and Pithing Needle absolutely does work.

@enpc

I was reading my information from The Offical Wizards Of The Coast MTG website

And if you read the rules, it clearly states the above. If you asked me, I would think this is, by that technicality, a mana ability.

Excuse me if I'm wrong though.

A mana ability is described as [cost]:[add mana to your mana pool]. This is typically seen on cards like Llanowar Elves where the ability is [cost - tap]:[add to your mana pool.]

Lethal Vapors is just a standard activated ability. The cost is , meaning that you pay zero mana to activate the ability making it effectively free (technically there is still a cost involved). No mana is generated in any way from the ability.

@enpc Oh, that was completely my mistake. I made an assumption, and as usual, I was wrong!

I see how this works now, though, I was like totally taken aback by that because I've seen the combo used before. My apologies haha.

If you're still active with the deck I'd run Scrying Sheets as long as you're using Snow-Covered Swamp.

How about Torment of Hailfire since your deck runs a lot of hate, I can see this card fitting in there.

Maybe Paradox engine could do some work after drawing the deck and having some mana rocks down

I am thinking of updating this deck for the current cedh meta, just for fun. Needs lower cmc and probably more hate cards. Been keeping track of this deck for years but I think the OP probably dropped the project.

IronBlackZepp

He did. Me and Sicohippy made our various iterations of the deck based on his temple. Mine is not cEDH, just a 75% deck The Descent Into Darkness and then there's Sico's X Gon' Give It To Ya.

You are absolutely right, this deck needs a much lower curve. I would say 3.1 at the most would be best to keep up, what do you think?

Moreover, if you do make an updated version, I would love to see it.

IronBlackZepp says... #21

Profet93. I think that a curve between 2.5 and 3 would be safe enough. The deck would be at it's best in a, staxy, or slower combo environment. Against a pod of storm decks it would not work.

I played it competitively on xmage for a while and it did it's work against creature based decks such as Animar, Narset, Kaalia, any or mono green deck no matter what tier.

I'll try and post something soon, but it may be a while. Currently I think Chainer is the best mono black stax deck in the cedh meta.

IronBlackZepp

I completely agree. Against storm you can add in the new 2 CMC artifact (dampening something) from Dominara and maybe some targeted discard like Mind Twist could help, although I don't have much experience against storm.

I find the deck is great against creature based strategies as you said.

I don't think Chainer is the best though, if anything, Sidisi, Undead Vizier might be better as a reuseable tutor in the command zone

IronBlackZepp says... #23

Sidisi is the overall best mono black deck for fast combo, but as far as grinding games out I like Chainer better.
