This is my personal build of UR Metalwork Colossus. The idea here is to ramp with mana rocks to be able to cast large threats like Metalwork Colossus and Elder Deep-Fiend. Metalwork Colossus can consistently come down on turns 4, 5, or 6 and most decks will concede to 0 mana 10/10s if they haven't already put me below 10 life.
For the control matchup we have Negate,
Imprison in the Moon
, and padeem to board in.
Against aggro, we can board in Kozilek's Return and deep fiends. Sometimes Skysovereign, Consul Flagship comes in rather than Return if we need dedicated spot removal.
Against midrange, Key to the City and our other card advantage sources shine.
Just last week I broke through a stalemate against GB Delirium by sandbagging energy off of a Gonti's Aether Heart and punching through with an unlockable Colossus, cashing in the Heart, and untapping to do it again.
If you're sick of playing Super Friends or GB mirrors, or want to do something else with your mana rocks besides play Aetherflux Reservoir combo, the Colossus shell is surprisingly flexible and capable of holding its own against the aggro decks and punching through the midrange builds you might see at FNM.
I've played a few different versions of UR Colossus and seen a lot of variance in the color combinations other brewers have experimented with. Mono white Colossus, Selesenya, Jeskai, Grixis, Temur, Dimir, and even Mono Blue are all very fertile archetypes for the Colossus shell.Aether Reservoir decks have no problem whatsoever casting the giant robot. Give it a try! Even if you're on a budget, there's plenty of cards you can include: Combustible Gearhulk instead of Skysovereign, World Breaker instead of Elder Deep-Fiend, Radiant Flames instead of Kozilek's Return, etc.
