Storming on a budget

Commander / EDH UR (Izzet)

mahanhen

This is a budget spellslinger deck built around Mizzix of the Izmagnus which reduces the colorless cost of instants and sorceries. We take advantage of this by casting spells with limited colored mana requirements. Because most of the spells in the deck draw cards or make mana, we can chain spells together.

The deck is designed to win on turn 5, the turn after Mizzix is in play, so you should hold all your spells in hand until she is. Turn 5 has a high win percentage assuming she survives and you still have all your spells in hand. This deck snowballs extremely fast through the first couple spells and the goal is to get the experience counters to 5 to enable our win condition.

Once you hit 5 experience counters and 5 red mana, spend three red mana on a Storm King's Thunder for 5, get the experience counter followed by using two red mana to cast a Crackle with Power (x=2). This results in 6 total copies of crackle, and a total of 120 damage, which conveniently is your opponents starting life totals. You’ll often have more mana and experience counters than this, but 5 of each is the bare minimum when going for the combo in most cases.

When storming off there are a couple of things to consider, the most important of which is the bottleneck in generating blue mana. Try prioritizing playing islands over mountains. Also The red mana you generate can be converted into blue via treasures. With a Storm-Kiln Artist in play many spells can be paid with a single treasure which then will replace itself. Also High Tide plus a spell that untaps your lands is another way to generate blue mana. The best card draw in the deck is in blue so it’s important to keep in mind.

Reiterate is a key card in the deck that can generate infinite mana with Turnabout or Seething Song. It can also create draw loops to draw your deck with Frantic Search or Inspired Tinkering.

Lastly, there are 4 creatures like Baral, Chief of Compliance and Goblin Electromancer in the deck that serve as a backup to Mizzix, and help out greatly when trying to storm off when she is being targeted. They can also be early game plays to help get a faster start on the discounting of spells once you decide to try and go for the win.

That’s the basic rundown on how to play the deck, I hope you liked it!
