Okay first thing, if budge allows lose the Azorius Guildgates and replace them with Temple of Enlightenments or Sejiri Refuges. The temples would be my first choice. If you are going to play a tapped land at least get some benefit from them in the form of scry or life. You are running two Evolving Wilds and two Terramorphic Expanses, I would drop a couple of these and just run two more Scoured Barrens if you are worried about mana fixing.

In general you have a lot of one of cards in the deck Which I would assume will lead to some inconsistency. I would lose a few such as Swords to Plowshares, Coat with Venom. You have 12 enchantment aura and 15 creatures, as you have 12 dead cards if you don't get one of those creatures into play.

You may want to consider Phalanx Leader as a way to add +1/+1 counters. You might want to drop a couple of the one of creatures to add a couple more of the more important creatures.

Also get rid of Contagion Clasp, its mostly used for infect decks and there are better ways to add +1/+1 counters, than paying 4 mana to proliferate.

The Temple of Enlightenments would be too expensive, but the Sejiri Refuges are definitely going in.

Yeah, Contagion Clasp was always an ify card for me. I'll definitely get rid of it for the Phalanx Leader, and probably the Swords to Plowshares, Coat with Venom for two more of the leader.

Thanks. I appreciate the input.

Oh.. you should cut down to 60 cards.... just noticed you were at 65... most decks run better at 60.

Okay, will do. Sometimes though, you just want so many cards and then you realize you're at 75 and you have no idea what to cut...

I have been there.... cutting the deck to 60 is always my biggest problem.

You wouldn't happen to know why my decks aren't legal would you, because for some reason both of the decks that I posted say they're not legal in modern. I thought modern was sort of the catch all in mtg?

On this deck it's Swords to Plowshares. Modern consists of cards from 8th edition onward. This link shows all legal sets in modern http://magic.wizards.com/en/gameinfo/gameplay/formats/modern

Ah. Okay, well I was going to take out Swords to Plowshares anyway, thought I think it's a really good card...

There's no "catch-all" format in Magic. Vintage is the closest to that, but there are banned and restricted cards in that format as well. Modern contains only cards that are printed in or after 8th Edition in a main set (not a reprint set like From the Vault or a Duel Deck).

Swords to Plowshares is your illegal card. You can see that on the right panel on this page, near the bottom where it says "Illegal cards." If you want a similar effect that is modern legal, take a look at Path to Exile.

Most of your cards, however, are Standard legal (and your idea of powering up Battlewise Hoplite is already an established strategy in Standard). You should take out the older cards, add some more newer ones, and make this deck Standard. Here would be my suggestion:

4 Battlewise Hoplite
4 Hero of Iroas
4 Ordeal of Thassa
4 Favored Hoplite
4 Seeker of the Way
4 Gods Willing
4 Defiant Strike

This is where I would start building a heroic deck. If you're not willing to spend money on Temple of Enlightenment you should at least consider Flooded Strand. Flooded Strand was recently reprinted and its price has gone way down. If you can get your hands on a few of them, they are sure to go up in price in the next couple of years.

That is more to the point of what I'm trying to do isn't it... Thank you.

I didn't know about the duel decks not being legal, now the illegal cards make much more sense, and why all my decks say illegal on them.

Duel decks cards are legal, but only in the formats in which those cards were already legal before the reprinting. For example, the Duel Decks version of Swords to Plowshares is legal in Legacy (since other versions of the card are legal in Legacy), but it is not legal in Modern even though it was printed after 8th Edition's release.

Is the intention of the deck to be for casual play with friends? If so then I wouldn't worry about having older cards.. just change the deck type from modern to casual.

If you are trying to make a modern deck for modern events, then that is really hard to do without investing a lot of money, as most competitive modern decks are really pricey. Even the decks I have listed on my page as modern, aren't really modern competitive and are really only good for casual play.

If you are making a deck to play at your local friday night magic events then you need to change to a standard format.. using cards from Theros block and newer.. at least until Theros rotates out.... typically you can make a decent standard deck with minimal investing. Now if you are going to play standard format, you will need to invest in at least a solid mana base, which unfortunately would mean Temple of Enlightenments or Flooded Strands. And with Temple of Enlightenment rotating out of standard format at the end of the year, Flooded Strands would be the better investment for the longer term if you planned on playing at many Friday night magics.

But if you are just playing with friends, you can get away with something much cheaper such as Sejiri Refuges

The primary thing I'm interested in is casual play. I don't feel like investing the money for real competitive play, but I would like to make a legal deck just so if I wanted to go to a Friday Night Magic I could. Not that I would win, but I enjoy the game so it doesn't really matter on that front.

Friday Night Magic requires a Standard Legal deck... so you will need to lose the following cards as they are legal in modern not standard.

Detention Sphere

Bladed Bracers

Contagion Clasp

Swiftfoot Boots

Ascended Lawmage

Auramancer

Frontline Medic

Sun Titan

Razor Barrier

Swords to Plowshares << not even legal in modern.

Azorius Guildgate

Hallowed Fountain

Kabira Crossroads

New Benalia

Terramorphic Expanse

Sejiri Refuge

So to get a legal deck, you are going to have to gut this one a lot. Sorry

Some cards to consider might include

Favored Hoplite

Phalanx Leader

Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest

Center Soul

Gods Willing

Ajani's Presence

And the land you need for mana fixing is Tranquil Cove, replace the guildgates with this.

None of those cards is essential for the deck. Tranquil Cove is a functional reprint of Sejiri Refuge and is legal. Auramancer + Ordeal of Thassa or Ordeal of Heliod seems cool though.

From personal experience, Phalanx Leader plays a lot worse than it looks on paper.

The best combo was Sun Titan + Ordeal of Thassa/Ordeal of Heliod. It's unfortunate that Sun Titan isn't legal, it's such a good card.
