Yes, aeon, I'm not a newbie. I know very well the benefits of running fetchlands. In this deck, however, there is really no benefit. No benefit whatsoever. But it is mathematically proven that the thinning can take an immediate effect, regardless of the shuffle. It will slightly decrease my chances of drawing a mountain later in the game, thus helping me draw the lightning bolt I need to end the game. I would like an Arid Mesa however. I will seek to acquire them.

Ohh... My bad broski lol. You asked about Eternal Formats and I assumed you didn't know. <--- ass outta me :-/

Somebody posted an article debunking the fetch lands thinning the deck thought. I'll see if I can find it... Anyway.

I lucked out and pulled, traded, or bought some fetch lands when Zendikar was in Standard and just rotated out. I predict the Shocklands that have been reprinted will drop to around $5.00-$7.00 each with Dragon's Maze, as the market will be flooded with them. After it cycles out, I then predict the Shocklands to jump as the Zendikar fetch lands did, up to $15.00-$20.00, within 18-24 months after rotation. The original Shocklands from the Ravnica block are considerably more now then they've ever been. At one point they were $8.00-$12.00 each. Now they're around $20.00-$30.00 each...

Np problem. You make a good point. I will probably drop a ton on shocklands for investing if they drop to $5 again. They're just too playable. Peace, bro, and may aeon store that scrumptious liver.

Just throwin' this out there: "Goblin Guide is rough in Modern. I do believe it is the best one drop for red in Legacy because they typically run 17-19 lands. In Modern they are running much more and you are just helping them ramp.

I was wondering how Young Pyromancer would run in a deck like this. It gives you a little more staying power with all the tokens that would chump block.

Please feel free to check out my deck and comment: Tymaret's Bridge (beta 1.0)

Disagree with CornRecce here. Legacy decks will run 18-24 lands, similar to Modern and the lands they give are rarely an issue as you can have them dead before they are relevant.

I'm also curious as to how you plan to play around your own Blood Moon with no swamps. Or is your plan to side out the 12 cards that want swamps, or are you relying on Deathrite Shaman

LeaPlath, look at the results of the last two SCG Opens in Legacy. The most was Shardless BUG with 22 (aside from Punishing Jund, but that's because they Loam), and most running 18-20. Look at the tops of GP Detroit. 23/24 Lands (except Affinity with 16).

When was the last time you saw Goblin Guide make the top 8 in a mid to a major Modern Tournament? I'll tell you, top 8 in Grand Prix Kansas City, a Goblins deck took top 4 with 102 people back in June 2013, RB Aggro got 2nd in a 272 person PTQ back in January 2013. Btw, I got my info from MTGdecks.net.

I'm just saying, I don't think it is the beat stick people think it is. When you got a format dominated by Jund and Pod, this card helps them A LOT.

The format has shifted away from pod though. Pod kinda got pushed away because UWR just hates on it so hard and UWR is good versus all the other combo decks with are faster than pod, and UWR become popular cause people had all the staples for it from MM/Standard. UWR has just been pushed off the top spot by the midrange decks (G/B/X etc, see the most recent GP).

As for Goblin Guide/decks with guide in not placing recently, I think that has more to do with modern than the actual card. Goblin Guide is by far the best card a red deck wins can play, because it provides info, will generally do at least 4 damage and helps you kill them before the lands matter. But the creatures people are playing are simply capable of beating RDW in quality and ETB, (such as Kitchen Finks or Deathrite Shaman ) and RDW doesn't have the much needed reach they have in legacy (such as Price of Progress or Flameblast).

Basically, the lack of goblin guide isn't due to it being a bad card, but rather the format not allowed RDW due to faster combo and better creatures.

OK, so we are agreeing but on different points. Goblin Guide is not necessarily the best card for the format. I just want to add, I never said it was a bad card.

I must say that Goblin Guide is the best one mana red drop in modern, and ever only behind obviously Lackey and I forget the other... Perhaps Lavamancer? Anyhow, I don't have much of a choice. Goblin Guide kills them, I don't care how many more lands they draw, but it is essential to the deck.

LeaPlath, the Blood Moon come in only when I am playing a hyper control or 4 color aggro that really needs the different colors. In most cases, it doesn't prevent me from casting much and slows them down so much that I can blast my way to a win within two turns of resolving it, while they search for the mana to respond. It comes in only when it helps me more than the opponent - but yes, Deathrite's can be the alternative way to get around Blood Mooning myself. That and Magma Jet .

Hm, I would consider having at least 1 basic swamp in the deck.

Besides that, I like it.

Ever consider Stigma Lasher ?

vishnarg says... #15

Yes, yes indeed. He was once a key part of the sideboard, but I've realized that skullcrack just does way more in this deck.

I can appreciate life gain hate, but why mainboard two Skullcrack over two Lightning Helix ?

Lord_Mongoose says... #17

Two more Lightning Helix, that is.

They ban Deathrite Shaman :C but you can replace him with 3 more Grim Lavamancer & one more Skullcrack maybe ? btw +1

vishnarg says... #19

I saw that coming, so I was thinking of replacements. This deck will still work, I just have to rethink a bit. Not a problem though, just a little dissapointing. I may turn it into a zoo deck with Wild Nacatl or something.

February 3, 2014 11:25 a.m.

Even w/o DRS, this deck is still a beast. Boros Charm and maybe even Lightning Helix are worth the white splash. You'll get plenty of mileage out of Grim Lavamancer . Not as good as DRS, but still a very good card.

Hey vishnarg i love this deck so much but alas my friends like casual :( do you think you can make a legacy/casual version of this deck for me?

Pretty straight forward fish deck. I'm trying out Cold-Eyed Selkie in mine. I use Judge's Familiar as a temp for Cursecatcher . Have you thought about Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ?

October 18, 2014 3:44 a.m.

vishnarg says... #23

Judge's Familiar isn't a merfolk, so it's not ideal. Cursecatcher is far better as the 1 drop of the deck. Cold-Eyed Selkie may work, I'll try it out. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx would make much mana in this deck, but I have no real use for all that mana, so I'll just stick with the current mana base. Thanks for the suggestions!

addaff says... #24

I just don't have any Cursecatcher s so it's my cheap replacement till I get them. The aggro game suffers a little due to them not being merfolk. This is what I'm working with.

I love decks that focus on one creature type that are still viable for use. However, I'm not sure about Master of Waves, maybe if you added in something else to buff the elemental tokens, Obelisk of Urd comes to mind, though it is a little high-costing, but something that has a similar effect, as the elemental tokens all die when Master of Waves as they are all 1/0 s. Other than that, its a great deck, I'll +1
