The Pioneers Used to Ride These Babies for Miles!

Pioneer BG (Golgari) Discard Goodstuff Midrange Primer Rock Tempo

Here's my take on the Rock in Pioneer. The only place to have fun with a playset of Deathrite Shaman outside of Vintage.

Grind out matches with the only 1 mana Planeswalker and value driven support cards.

Early Game

Win the attrition war with discard and efficient removal.
Thoughtseize, Abrupt Decay, and Liliana of the Veil should help to set-up the mid-game with perfect information and control of the board state.

Mid Game

Begin establishing a taller board presence while continuing to keep the opponent's resources and threats to a minimum. Cards like Asylum Visitor, Scavenging Ooze, and Blackbloom Rogue   pose enough of a threat to draw out any remaining removal and can trade with most smaller threats at this stage of the game. Especially with the aid of Liliana of the Veil and more removal.

End Game

Finish off with Tergrid's Lantern  , Consuming Blob, and Urborg Lhurgoyf. Tireless Tracker can run away with games providing card advantage where needed and a decent body with enough clue sac-ing.

Simply put; Deathrite Shaman is legal in Pioneer. Make it work.

To over complicate it; Play an interactive, "fair" deck that wins through value engines and combat damage instead of an infinite combo.

Asylum Visitor

There are several options to stand in for Dark Confidant in Pioneer. Two common alternatives are Pain Seer and Glint-Sleeve Siphoner. With a 3/1 body, Asylum Visitor gives us a more aggressive approach to card advantage, as well as allowing us to better control the damage taken from it. The added bonus of having it pitchable to Liliana of the Veil for madness is also a welcome upside.

Urborg Lhurgoyf

A playset of goyfs. While not a T2 playable creature, T3 can be a 5/6 (highly unlikely) if you've gotten extremely lucky both curving out and with kicker.

Tergrid, God of Fright  / Tergrid's Lantern

Tergrid's Lantern   acts as a second copy of Liliana of the Veil and is a great mana sink late game finisher. If you can get both sides of Tergrid in play the synergy is astounding.
