It's what makes the deck work so well. Creatures deal damage equal to their toughness, without changing their power. It also pumps them up and allows the defenders to attack.
But obviously, there are contingency plans:
Wakestone Gargoyle - let's all my defenders attack (works wonders with Assault Formation)
Vent Sentinel - direct damage to a player equal to the number of defenders i have
Helpfull cards:
Stalwart Shield-Bearers - makes walls bigger, hurts more with Assault Formation
Overgrown Battlement - mana for Assault Formation (or to use as colorless mana)
Geist of the Lonely Vigil - attacks if delirium is active, but it's still a defender
The rest, helps to stall the game until the winning condition(s) is(are) active
