Do you consider cards like Hero of the Bladehold, Auriok Champion playable in the mainboard?

July 6, 2016 12:30 p.m.

DHamlin says... #2

No, Hero is not a good card in general anymore, Sorin/Gideon take up the 4cmc slot and Hero does nothing but turn on dead removal. Auriok is still a fine SB option but the main reason to run it (Twin) is no longer around, between this and meta shifts it isn't really as good anymore so a lot of players have cut it entirely.

That makes sense. I run Auriok Champion myself because I see a ton of decks running red for lightning bolt and lightning helix in my local meta. Still, I like the idea of more removal and utility spells instead of creatures. Thanks for clarifying.

Yeah Burn/Zoo heavy meta definitely makes Auriok worth running. Average meta not as much.

Have you considered Lord of Innistrad?

Liliana of the Veil gets protected by tokens, while her +/- abilities tear apart your opponent's resources. You run Lingering Souls, giving you an advantage to playing her for both offensive and defensive reasons. Also, Bitterblossom makes getting rid of Lily a nightmare for your opponent.

Tron will be a very difficult matchup. You don't "win fast." Meaning they will have time to get their setup going. And as you may know, no deck in Modern "Out Values Tron" in a long game. It's impossible. But there is a few things you may find helpful against them.

First off, play on your deck's strengths. Being only 2 colors means you can afford to stretch your mana base a bit thinner than it is. You can run a full playset of Ghost Quarter in the mainboard, maybe even a Tectonic Edge too. If not, you can also side 1, and run 4 in the main. I have had no trouble running 5-6 utility lands that generate colorless mana in 2 color decks, yours shouldn't be any different.

White has the ability to destroy everything... And to tax the opponent for playing spells. Kinda like the hatebears type thing. One of the creatures stops searching (Expedition Map, Sylvan Scrying etc). You are already running Stony Silence, those should help as well. Thalia can slow them down further.

Black doesn't have the same level of disruption as Blue in terms of dealing with things off the top of the deck. But you can make a stronger effort at shredding their hand. You can run a full 8 in the 75 of Ink/Seize. If that is not enough, consider adding Duress, Tidehollow Sculler, Castigate and so on.

Though it may be a bit slower than you'd like, you could run more man-lands. It is true they come into play tapped. But having the ability to attack through an All is Dust, Oblivion Stone or Ugin on the following turn is pretty important. You aren't running Flash or Haste, this will make things difficult to continue pressure. If you ever have to take off a turn from being wrathed, you have to rebuild and give your opponent another shot of Karn/Ugin/O-Stone/All is Dust your stuff again. This is exactly how Tron players want the pace of the game to go.

Veeonix I'm going to assume you didn't even read my write up and/or don't play this deck regularly as I had already addressed the Tron issue in there. Additionally I did not flag this deck as needing help/suggestions so your comment is rather unwanted. However I will point out a few things. The deck folds to Tron, that is not just my opinion but the consensus of years of tokens players of every skill level. You don't adjust for it because you don't win and that's that. The mana is not as clear cut as you assume as ideally over the first 3 turns you need B, followed by WW or 1B, and then WWW, this alone excludes LotV from ever seeing play in a traditional build as 1BB turn 3 completely ruins any consistency the list has. Lord of Innistrad is completely inferior to Solemn Visitor as it does nothing to help stabilize or provide any advantage that Solemn Visitor doesn't do better. 1/1 lifelink token vs +1/+0 and lifelink to your entire field until YOUR next turn is laughable, mediocre emblem vs 2/2 Flying token is again not great, and finally an ultimate that can fizzle entirely vs an Emblem that simple ends the game in many matchups is a blow out. Solemn visitor is universally agreed to be the single best walker in the deck, followed by Elspeth Tirel, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, and Elspeth, Knight-Errant.Finally I am entirely aware of how this deck plays, I play it regularly at every level of competitive environment, and do not appreciate having condescending comments that are worded as though it is assumed I have no clue how to play magic posted on my decks.

I would consider cutting Secure the Wastes for Timely Reinforcements. Other than that, great list! +1

DHamlin says... #8

verynice47 I actually cut the Timely entirely once I got the Aurioks. Between them, Sorin, and Shambling Vent life gain isn't a problem. Secure is a blowout card in the long games, especially vs Control, as well as being an instant speed token source to provide surprise blocks vs Infect, Bogles, and such.

verynice47 says... #9

Ok, but Secure the Wastes is a highly situational card, even more so than Timely Reinforcements. I personally prefer the reinforcements but it's your call.

DHamlin says... #10

verynice47 oh for sure they're both situational, I just find having at least 1 instant speed token source to be more necessary.

Why the choice of Elspeth Tirel as opposed to Elspeth, Knight-Errant?

October 4, 2016 10:57 p.m.

DHamlin says... #12

Lifa: Elspeth Tirel is a meta call due to a recent increase in Bant Eldrazi and to a lesser extent 8-Rack in my area. Her +2 gains life outside of combat, while her -2 rebuilds the board both of which are usually relevant. Finally her -5 in most cases simply wins the game on the spot.

I really like this deck.

October 8, 2016 12:20 p.m.

DHamlin says... #14

umi. thanks, it's really fun to play, and can be built rather cheap and upgraded over time as the only pieces in the mainboard over ~$10-11 are Auriok, Bitterblossom, Fetchlands, Filterlands, Gideon, and Thoughtseize.

I'm seriously thinking about building this deck...I can't believe it only got 14 upvotes!

umi. says... #16

I guess if I built it I would include more creatures, though...

October 9, 2016 9:24 a.m.

DHamlin says... #17

umi. You really don't want more than 2-3 creatures in general, a large chunk of the decks strength is making targeted removal bad.

October 9, 2016 11:13 a.m.

umi. says... #18

Ah. I suppose if I was going to really make this...do you have any suggestions for creature cards that are less expensive?

October 10, 2016 2:49 p.m.

DHamlin says... #19

umi. you actually don't need creatures at all. However Kor Firewalker and/or Burrenton Forge-Tender are both common sideboard options and aren't pricy. As for mainboard creatures some people have run Hero of Bladehold or Mirran Crusader.

Thanks so much...I'm new and don't have much experience here (tappedout and magic in general). Your deck is really cool :)

theanimetrix Crawlspace isn't modern legal as it was only in Urza's Legacy and Commander 2013.
