Toski, Bearer of Secrets

Commander / EDH Mono-Green

This deck is pretty straightforward. Ramp, play Toski, Bearer of Secrets as soon as you can, push damage through however you can, then snowball by drawing cards, ramping, and continually pushing damage through to victory.

Pros:

  • Toski is indestructible and can't be countered, meaning it gets out and stays out very consistently
  • Green's schtick of ramping into good creatures and draw spells to then ramp more creates a very useful powerful feedback loop that can easily snowball out of control, and Toski is an excellent engine for doing what green does best. (Compare this to cards like Ghalta, Primal Hunger, which are fun but aren't much more than just a big body)
  • Budget Toski builds can be very effective --- mono color decks have extremely consistent mana with just basic lands, whereas three, four, and five color decks have much pricier mana bases (and can lose games on the spot to cards like From the Ashes)

Cons:

  • Green has no boardwipes. If someone else gets a larger board, either through a powerful combo or by generating a lot of tokens, you get beaten at your own game
  • Green's spot removal is very fickle and usually relies on having a large creature, or a creature with deathtouch. Prizefight or Kenrith's Transformation are basically the best you have

Strategy

The central idea is that once you get damage through and start drawing, it makes it very easy to draw into a bigger board and more ramp, so the deck has very high snowball potential. You have a couple good ways to get started:

Properly sequencing your ramp early can let you get Toski out very consistently on turn 3, and sometimes by turn 2, but it requires sequencing your ramp carefully. For example, playing Lotus Cobra before either playing a land or casting Nature Lore let you float an additional mana, which you can then spend on even more ramp or creatures. Sometimes it's best to cast Toski as soon as you can (usually turn 3) and attack next turn, sometimes it's best to wait an extra turn to cast Toski so he and your mana dorks can attack together, and sometimes it's best to delay Toski even further if your opponents have wide boards and you have strong ramp plays.

After you've started snowballing, fish for Thought Vessel or Reliquary Tower to hold on to the cards you're drawing, and start looking for cards like Lure or Triumph of the Hordes that either let you vastly accelerate your snowball or kill your opponents outright. Other consistent endgames are casting Finale of Devastation for >= 10 and tutoring out Craterhoof Behemoth (or maybe Apex Devastator for fun).
