An attempt to make a competitive Simic ramp deck with some blue devotion thrown in. Early ramp makes turn 3 Polukranos, World Eater or
Prophet of Kruphix
possible. Adaptable sideboard make this a solid contender against most deck types. Just some cool combos going on here.
Lets Break it down:
PLANEWALKERS
Kiora, the Crashing Wave: At last a simic planeswalker! and a good one at that! +1 will take care of a threat for you, providing defense until you can pop off the ultimate. -1 for an Explore isn't bad, but usually not worth it with this deck in most situations. Keep her alive for 3 turns and then smother your opponent in 9/9 krakens.
CREATURES
Elvish Mystic: Even though for devotion purposes, Cloudfin Raptor might be a better one drop, mana ramp on turn 2 and 3 is especially helpful for this deck.
Kiora's Follower: A solid ramp card, with some additional applications like psedo-vigilance, or synergy with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. As a 2/2 can deal in some damage as well.
Frostburn Weird
: One of the best commons in standard right now; this guy's toughness makes him a solid defender, and ability makes him a situational damage dealer, not to mention and important 2 blue devotion. Usually sideboarded in for
Tidebinder Mage
if there are no red or green targets.
Tidebinder Mage
: Solid devotion and a green/red answer makes this a destructive 2 drop. Shuts down a huge chunk of the set's dangerous creatures, usually forcing an answer, and eating up your opponents removal. Very powerful card against the right colors.
Thassa, God of the Sea: Can hit devotion often on turn 4 making this a solid swinger. Unblockable ability is key during locked down games. Scry 1 every turn helps hit needed cards late game. Very solid 3 drop even without devotion. Often devoted when Prime Speaker Zegana hits the board resulting in massive card draw.
Polukranos, World Eater: One of the biggest hitters in the deck with a solid removal ability. Good trigger for Prime Speaker Zegana and also ability synergy with
Kruphix, God of Horizons
. Watch all your extra mana wipe their whole board then swing in for huge damage.
Master Biomancer
: Unbelievable combo with Master of Waves usually resulting in Game Over. Heck yes I'll take 4-5 4/3s that won't die with Master of Waves. Hit with a Simic Charm before for ultimate lolz. Also see Hydra Broodmaster. Makes late draw mana dorks or
Frostburn Weird
serious threats, also a 4/5
Prophet of Kruphix
. Most likely need at least one more, but might appreciate another Polukranos, World Eater more.
Master of Waves: Easily removed by anything not red, but usually game over if not dealt with. Magic with
Master Biomancer
and good synergy with Bident of Thassa.
Prophet of Kruphix
: Really the card this entire deck has been built for. If it works, ends up being broken, providing you with plenty of flashed in threats (during their endstep), and mana for spells, along with vigilance. Sweet sweet synergy with
Kruphix, God of Horizons
. Nothing like having 20+ colorless mana to work with. Drop turn 3 with Elvish Mystic and Kiora's Follower, followed by a turn 3.5 Pollukranos, World Eater. Money. So good, but not being an immediate threat for 5 cmc has made me cut back the count. Could potentially run 2.
Kruphix, God of Horizons
: More of a for fun card than anything, don't really think it is worth it in standard. Hitting devotion is not even that difficult with this deck, and even at 4/7 it is still a pretty big threat. Having a ton of extra mana is always appreciated. Supreme synergy and flavor with
Prophet of Kruphix
and craziness with Hyrdra Broodmaster.
Prime Speaker Zegana: With so many fat creatures around this often nets 6 or more cards, while also creating board presence. Cost is usually not a problem. Feel this is one of the most important cards in the deck and very underplayed. Nothing like getting a handfull of cards with
Prophet of Kruphix
on the board. Combo with
Master Biomancer
for even more cards. Also provides mad devotion for
Kruphix, God of Horizons
and decent devotion for Thassa, God of the Sea as well.
Shipbreaker Kraken
: Not too difficult to drop with this much ramp; often game ending monstrous ability. Adds solid devotion for Thassa as well. Could possibly get replaced with better bomb. Also ocean flavor for the win.
Hydra Broodmaster: Solid 7/7 for 6 cmc, also a nice mana sink late game. Combine with
Master Biomancer
and Kruphrix, God of Horizons for most fun.
SPELLS
Simic Charm: Good amount of adaptable abilities. Bounce effect useful for enduring aggro, or temporarily slowing down scary guys. Pump ability is a nice surprise when used on mana dorks early game and Hexproof is a nice answer to creature removal. Lack of popularity makes this spell a nice surprise play.
Cyclonic Rift: Essential for control match-ups; can provide a free timewalk if played on opponent's end step. Often a gamewinner if overloaded with board presence. Can also slow down planeswalkers and other annoying things. One of Blue's strongest spells IMO.
Bident of Thassa: Good for devotion and card advantage. Solid against control matchups and for removing smaller creatures. Kind of so-so against aggro as it doesn't offer any defensive abilities. Ussually Sideboarded out against fast decks.
Unravel the Aether: God and Artifact hate, with a lot of targets within this set. Might need 2.
SIDEBOARD
Triton Tactics
: A solid answer for creature aggro. One of my favorite combat tricks providing a pseudo-vigilance, frost ability, and extra toughness.
Pithing Needle: Very useful sideboard card, stopping planeswalkers and some ability dependent creatures.
Dissolve: Good hard counter with added Scry. Sideboarding in for the control matchup and removal heavy decks.
Syncopate: I ussually prefer Dissolve but the occasional turn 2 counter and exile benefit makes this a solid counter as well.
Curse of the Swine: God-Killer and threat removal. Nothing like the look on your opponent's face when all their threats are reduced to 2/2 pigs. Oink! Also some interesting synergy with
Master Biomancer
.
Frostburn Weird
: Here to take the place of
Tidebinder Mage
in non-green/red matchups.
Ratchet Bomb
: Good token removal and pack rat hate. Solid sideboard card.
Rapid Hybridization: Often a 3/3 is not hard to lock down. Solid "removal" for one blue. Also transmutation flavor.
