Welcome to the playground of our overlord
The idea is simple. Stall till you can play Purphoros, God of the Forge. Play tons of token generators. Burn enemy face off.
Every time a creature hits your side of the field, Purphoros, God of the Forge smacks your opponent for 2 (Or any planeswalkers he might have!). This means that our spells and creatures that make more creatures do double duty. We can block all day and still bring the enemy to 0.
But one of the best parts of this deck is that your creature and spell base is solid. Token generating spells and creatures tend to be quite strong on their own. So for example, while sure, Brimaz, King of Oreskos has the chance to pop your enemy for 2 each turn attacking and blocking by making his little friends, he's also an amazing creature on his own.
Let's break the cards down:
CreaturesHide Creatures
Purphoros, God of the Forge - Our main damage engine. Every creature we play turns into a shock to the enemy's face. He can also buff our creatures, but there's essentially 0% chance he'll ever be a creature.
Nyx-Fleece Ram Great card against aggro. Generally takes multiple spells to remove, nets you life and blocks blocks blocks. (I mainboard this because my local meta is very aggro)
Brimaz, King of Oreskos Incredibly solid card, an amazing 3 drop. And he also makes more tokens! Attacking and blocking, both will make creatures for Purphoros.
Goblin Rabblemaster This card is broken. It's so incredibly strong. It doesn't even have to swing to make creatures for us, it just makes them every combat. It's a must for any red deck, but for a deck like ours, it's even more amazing.
Wingmate Roc At last! Evasion! Life gain! Another token! This card can be incredibly clutch, and attacking with it and our other cast of tokens, it can easily keep us in the game.
Instants/SorceriesHide Instants/Sorceries
Hordeling Outburst
Three mana. Three bodies. 6 possible face damage. What's not to love?
Raise the Alarm Pretty much a 2 mana
Hordeling Outburst
for 2 creatures except these essentially have flash, very useful as blockers.
Stoke the Flames
Huge value, especially in a deck like this. Like Lightning Strike, it can be used to finish or remove threats, but the nice part about it is that we can use our token army to pay for it.
Triplicate Spirits
Not a bad card for a token generator amongst token generators. After playtesting, I found this card is much easier to cast than I thought and being able to block fliers is big.
Howl of the Horde
This one-of is quite fun. Combined with a stoke or a token making spell with Purphoros out and it can easily close out games. Even without Purphoros, having 6 extra tokens can be quite scary.
Arc Lightning The scalpel to Angers axe. This card is also very good against aggro decks, and while it wont hit as many of your opponents creatures as hard, it wont hit your creatures at all.
Walkers and EnchantmentsHide Walkers and Enchantments
Banishing Light Hard removal for those really pesky creatures/permanents that we can't just burn down.
Elspeth, Sun's Champion The only real bomb in the deck. If Elspeth and Purphoros are on the field at the same time, and the opponent doesn't have an answer, that's essentially game. Three 1/1s every turn and 6 face damage. Incredibly scary.
Dictate of Heliod
Sexy answer to Drown in Sorrow and
Doomwake Giant
. Can also be an alternate wincon. I've found that I should mainboard these because of the aforementioned cards and things like
Jeskai Ascendancy
.
Chained to the Rocks
Cheap creature removal. Good against aggro. This is a card that can be sided out against control but have more sided in vs creature heavy decks.
SideboardHide Sideboard
Anger of the Gods Aggro decks with lots of creatures getting you down? Blow em all up with Anger!! Sure you might lose some tokens of your own, but if you can make it past the early game and stabilize, you will probably beat any aggro deck with ease. (This card is great at dealing with Bloodsoaked Champion)
Erase Enchantment removal. Very strong against black and white specifically. Hits gods, Banishing Light,
Chained to the Rocks
, Whip of Erebos and more.
Devouring Light
Very strong removal. Especially strong when you can use your little tokens to convoke it for 1 or even with no mana up.
Glare of Heresy
White removal. Hits a lot of targets in the meta including
Siege Rhino
and Elspeth, Sun's ChampionEnd Hostilities Board wipe. Great against midrange decks. Blow up all of the scary things before they eat your face, but keep your main wincons alive and kicking.
Monastery Mentor into Maybeboard until I can actually get the cards.
