Phenax mill decks are highly explosive, so I would probably cut the mind sculpts. As it is, your deck has to resolve Phenax in order to mill them out, but walls with Phenax mill so quickly that you won't get there any faster with mind sculpt in the deck. Add 2 more Phenax and some more big walls and I think you should do well against aggro decks. Wall of Frost is amazing here. Tap to mill at end of turn, triton tactics before the mill resolves, and tap again to mill a total of 20 cards. Start of next turn, mill for another 7, that's half of their deck off of one creature. You really don't want cards that just chip away with Phenax. You want to play a ton of huge walls, then mill their deck out in 1 turn.

I like the advice -- now just to get more Wall of Frost .

Waste Not won't help you as you aren't getting them to discard (i.e. remove a card from hand) except with Mind Rot ; I thought about doing this also, but it dilutes things too much - I'd suggest to either mill or discard, not both; so there's 6 free slots for your Phenax and Walls; feel free to steal some ideas from my mill deck I'm trying out Work 25 hours a day at the old mill

Black Oak of Odunos feels like a waste. A 5 toughness creature is great with Phenax, but his ability is almost entirely useless. It is much more advantageous to tap a creature to mill, rather than tap one to make the Oak bigger. Guardians of Meletis would be better here as a 3 mana creature.

Because you rely so heavily on Phenax here, definitely consider upping your count to 3 if not 4 of him.

With adding more Phenax, you'll definitely want to up your land count, making sure you get enough mana to play him consistently. I'd try upping to 24 and playing around with 23-25 to find the right number. I play 25 in my Phenax deck, but it is different, with more higher cost creatures.

Although I havn't done it in my deck, I've seen some people splash green into their decks to play Prophet of Kruphix , and the result is phenomenal. It opens the door to so many possibilities.

I could go on and on, but I wont. I'll post a link to my deck instead for you to check out.

Thanks for the advice guys. Here's a list of changes I'll be making.

That should help the deck speed out with the extra Scry on the Dissolve (plus generic counter, as opposed to restricted counter), put in larger creatures for a bigger hit, and get to the endgame faster. I think I may play around with the manabase some, remove the filterlands and the Traveler's Amulet for some more consistency/lands from Khan's of Tarkir when it drops. Maybe a Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth instead of the Amulet...

I'll see how these changes play. Thanks everyone.

As evidently I can't edit posted comments, I meant to add:

  • 2x Phenax
  • 2x Guardians of Meletis
  • 4x Hero's Downfall
  • 4x Dissolve

And remove:

  • 2x Waste Not
  • 4x Mind Rot
  • 2x Black Oak
  • 4x Nullify

Looks good. Dropping Traveler's Amulet is definitely a good idea.

Polluted Delta is being reprinted in Khans, so if you manage to get a couple of those in here, it would way improve the consistency of your mana. Its just a shame the RTR shocks are rotating just as these come in...oh well.

@TheHroth:

I'll probably will be playing with the mana distribution for the deck after KTK comes out. I'm thinking an Urborg to replace the Traveler's Amulet, Polluted Deltas to replace two swamps and the two Unknown Shores; that should make for a very consistent, well running mana base.

The two Phenaxes and the four Hero's Downfalls should be in Monday; I'll be able to playtest the deck next week.

So after a few weeks of playing with the deck, I've noticed that the deck is really slow...I'm thinking Dig Through Time or Treasure Cruise in some combination to help speed up getting the big walls or the Phenax pieces at the end of the day.

I'll be removing Nullify and swapping out with either of the two KTK draw spells. I'll post again once I know which way it should go.
