Sideboard

Cheap little swarm deck, centered around -1/-1 counters. Cobbled together from a few decks here on TappedOut and online, very much a WIP.

Flow of play is pretty simple. You have three triggers that go off anytime you place a -1/-1 counter:

The win condition here is to spawn enough tokens to steadily minion/drain ramp or Overcome to victory. To do this we need a reasonably steady income of -1/-1 counters, preferably with ways of minimizing the effects of the counters we need to put on ourselves. The rest of the deck is pretty much focused on generating said counters, but a quick rundown:

Generators

  • Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons [Generates upon damage to player], our snake-loving waifu, not only does she give us a great trigger in the form of deathtouch tokens, but she also serves as one of our core generators, and in my opinion the easiest as well.
  • Obelisk Spider [Generates upon damage to creature], again, props to spidey for being both a trigger and a generator, although it can be a bit lackluster going against creature-limited decks. Works well as a blocker to allow you to just tap tap tap with the Vizier.
  • Ammit Eternal [Generates upon opponent spell cast], works as a psuedo-punish against spellcasting, weakening the Eternal for every spell and then triggering our procs, which effectively cancels out the counter. We can then hit the player to reset him back up, even if he's down to 1/1. If that wasn't good enough already, he's even got Afflict, so if our opponent wants to try and block the player damage and prevent the reset, he'll still pay.

Batteries

  • Banewhip Punisher, easy summon for an instant counter on any creature. 2/2 isn't too big, but after getting us our counter, she serves well as an executioner.
  • Channeler Initiate, one of two counter dumps, triggers Nest of Scarabs three times which is nice. Uncounters while serving as a rainbow mana battery. Adorable.
  • Festering Mummy, literal counter battery. 1/1 for one, great chump blocker, can do some fun hijinks with killing from the dead by putting a counter on a damaged creature, as well as the obvious benefit of proc'ing our triggers.

Spells

  • Fatal Push, catch-all execution. You're likely familiar with it.
  • Overcome, one of the only cards we have that doesn't involve -1/-1 counters (although it still deals with counters in general), this is one of our combo closers. Build up a spread of tokens and builders, count out lethal with overcome, and then push the field into your opponent.
  • Splendid Agony, a weak lightning strike in the form of counters, this serves us well enough for an instant that can trigger. Works well as a execute for X/2's.

Improvements

I've done a few matches with this so far and have run into the most troubled dealing with removal of our triggers that mess up the timing of our counter plays. I'm not sure if having some graveyard pull or some control is viable, but I'll continue to look through and hopefully get some advice. Cheers!
