Maybeboard

This Budget EDH deck centers around Eight-and-a-Half-Tails and other cards that can grant Protection. It aims to set up boards full of hatebear-type creatures and keep them safe via Protection effects. This deck is also Legendary-tribal.

The goal of this deck is to control and shut down our opponents using cheap denial creatures (called hatebears), like Grand Abolisher, Spirit of the Labyrinth, and Thalia, Heretic Cathar, which we can grab with Recruiter of the Guard.

Cards like Mother of Runes, Circle of Protection: White, Rune of Protection: White, and Story Circle in combination with color-fixers like Eight-and-a-Half-Tails, Cloudchaser Kestrel, and Aurora Griffin can also help us protect our board.

Through stax-effects provided by our slew of hatebears, we can buy time to set up relevant threats as needed, such as Pentarch Paladin for removal, Oketra's Monument or Elspeth, Sun's Champion for tokens, Mentor of the Meek or Bygone Bishop for card draw, and Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit for +1/+1 Counters.

This deck also runs many anthem effects. Cards like Celestial Crusader, Hall of Triumph, Spear of Heliod, and Konda's Banner provide buffs to our hatebears, making them more durable to damage-based removal, and better beaters. Day of Destiny, Konda's Banner, and Heroes' Podium also serve as anthems, but instead synergize with the many Legendaries in our deck.

Legendary creatures like Baird, Steward of Argive, Kytheon, Hero of Akros  , and Hixus, Prison Warden are bodies that provide useful effects. Tutors like Heroes' Podium and Thalia's Lancers can grab our Legendary creatures. Buffs from cards like the afformentioned Day of Destiny, Blackblade Reforged, and Sword of the Chosen can help us shift gears and go on the offensive. Odric, Master Tactician serves as a good finisher, allowing us to swing unblocked with all our creatures.

Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle, and Sun Titan provide us with recursion, allowing us to retrieve hatebears and other important cards from our graveyard, while Selfless Spirit and Teferi's Protection keep our board safe from wipes.

Mass Calcify, and Glare of Heresy provide extremely strong board wipe and removal options that synergize with Eight-and-a-Half-Tails. Dusk / Dawn is very powerful as a board wipe, as many of our creatures are power 2 or less.

We also run a couple foxes, like Pious Kitsune, providing lifegain if we have Eight-and-a-Half-Tails out, Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo for damage prevention, and Samurai of the Pale Curtain for graveyard hate. Together with 8.5 Tails, they provide us with an easy way to get out Patron of the Kitsune, which isn't very good, but is a beefy creature with a lifegain effect stapled to it which also discourages our opponents from attacking.

Possible Card Replacements:

Replace Eternal Dragon w/ Timeless Dragon — Timeless Dragon is just better than Eternal Dragon, though it can't be recurred as many times as Eternal Dragon. I mostly haven't included Timeless Dragon yet due to laziness.

Replace Winds of Abandon w/ Path to Exile — Winds of Abandon is run as a one-sided boardwipe, but it honestly isn't very good. Path to Exile only provides half of Winds of Abandon, but it is far more efficient.

Replace Cartographer's Hawk w/ Sword of the Animist — Sword of the Animist is a bit pricey for our budget. But if you can afford it, there's basically no downside. Our early hatebears can easily enable Sword of the Animist with little downside, allowing it to provide us with excellent Mana Ramp, which White really needs.

Replace Shefet Dunes w/ Kor Haven — Kor Haven is a decent land for this deck, as we often appreciate being able to dodge damage-based removal for our creatures. It's also Legendary, meaning we can tutor for it with Thalia's Lancers.

A possible easy improvement to this deck would be to include a land-destruction package in the form of Armageddon, Wasteland, Strip Mine, Dust Bowl, etc. These effects synergize with our strategy of running cheap creatures to lock down opponents. Land-destruction doesn't hurt us much, in cases like Armageddon, since we don't need a lot of mana to run, and it benefits our control/stax strategy.
