I went 3-1 overall at my first local LCG Modern tournament. There were a total of 35 people. My only loss was against BW Eldrazi (1-2). I won against, RB Vampires (2-1), Unburial gifts (2-0), and affinity (2-0)! :)
Playstyle
This deck involves building a board of green devotion creatures and whittling them down a little with
Rancor
/1-2 cost creatures turn 2-3. Turn 3-5+ you can swing for crazy trample damage with
Aspect of Hydra
and
Vines of Vastwood
with
Leatherback Baloth
and/or
Groundbreaker
on the board.
Dungrove Elder
,
Scavenging Ooze
, and
Dismember
are situational, but definitely help in certain instances. Dungrove is lower on the devotion side, but he makes up for that with hexproof. If you can get one on the board with rancor, watch your opponent squirm as you keep playing forests.
Card Choices
My stompy deck has most of the standard cards used in stompy, but I'm the only one I've seen that runs
Birds of Paradise
and
Groundbreaker
, and here is my reasoning. A decent amount of win conditions involve playing groundbreaker with aspect of hydra. Then using that 3 extra devotion and 6 trample damage to scare your opponent. Last night, my Groundbreaker attacked as a 16/11 on turn 5 or so.
Birds of paradise is probably the most controversial. However, I think it is my most versatile card. It allows me to drop a 4/5 baloth on turn 2 or
Collected Company
on turn 3, or whittle them down with rancor. With It can be used as a chump blocker, or a bluff if you attack as a 0/1, freeing other attackers. If it isn't blocked, throw aspect of hydra on it for uncontested killing blows.
The only reason I have a couple fetches in here is because I pulled them from packs.
