Sorcery (1)

Here we have a deck that exceeded my expectations. This was just going to be a thought experiment, but proved pretty effective. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Note: If anyone knows what I need to do to trigger the option to add the sub-hub Tap/Untap, please let me know. It isn’t part of the selectable hubs, but one of my other decks gave me the option to choose it as a secondary minor hub. I can’t figure out how to get it to appear so I can select it.

”First principles, Clarice; simplicity. Read Marcus Aurelius: Of each particular thing, ask ‘What is it in itself? What is its nature?’ What does it do, this land you seek?”

Island : Tap for .

To avoid a precarious situation down the road, we have at our disposal a few counterspells. Use these if necessary and there will be less headaches later.

Mana Leak will fizzle practically anything Turns 2, 3 or 4.

Remand is another option; buy time while potentially drawing that ace card you’re looking for.

We have no intention of engaging the opponent in carnal warfare, creature to creature. Instead, what we have is an assortment of creatures each with an individual role to play on the path to victory.

Cursecatcher can block in a pinch, but his real value comes in when used as a baby Mana Leak on a stick.

Silver Myr is crucial to our win strategy; we want him to hit the battlefield ideally Turn 2. More on this little fellow later.

Drift of Phantasms makes a fine blocker in its own right, although its main purpose for inclusion is to be able to find either Wake Thrasher or a particular enchantment through the Transmute keyword ability.

Wake Thrasher was the initial spark behind the idea for this deck. I was intending to build a Merfolk deck and came across him as I was scouring the cardlist. I thought ‘This card is kind of...crap. I should build around it.’ And thus, here we are. Wake Thrasher is a 1/1 for 3 stinking mana, which would be pure garbage...if not for his fairly unique text. Ok, so we untap a few lands and possibly some creatures that attacked/blocked the previous turn and he’s buffed a few times—big deal. Can we do anything else revolving around him...?

Nothing much to go over here—these spells bestow unblockability to whichever of our creatures we choose to target.

Slip Through Space also nets us a free draw as part of the deal. Cool.

Aqueous Form sticks around and also grants us incidental scrying.

Apostle's Blessing pulls double duty. Use it to protect key creatures if you’re not ready to go in for the kill yet, or else use it to provide faux unblockability to close out the game.

Aha, we forgot to go over a certain card. Freed from the Real is an enchantment of particular interest to us. The creature it enchants may now either tap or untap on command for the low, low cost of a single . The idea is to attach this to Silver Myr —once done, we can send him into an epileptic fit, rapidly vacillating between a tapped and untapped state. He’ll produce the mana the enchantment requires, you see, so we can repeat that process ad infinitum. This in and of itself would only benefit us when the Rave lights lower and the strobe starts flickering, if it weren’t for Wake Thrasher . It’s now possible to make the merfolk hulk out to guaranteed lethal proportions, as long as we can push that combat damage through. All that’s left is to cast one of the unblockable spells and it’s game over.
•Cast Silver Myr

•Cast Wake Thrasher

•Cast Freed from the Real , enchanting Silver Myr

•With Freed from the Real + Silver Myr and Wake Thrasher in play, cause the Myr to go spastic and it will buff the merfolk; attack with Wake Thrasher and cast a cheap unblockable spell for the win

There isn’t one right now. I’m not quite sure what to include. Maybe typical safety net stuff like Tormod's Crypt to banish graveyards, or Surgical Extraction for nuisance cards. Any ideas are welcome.

”There will also be...dancers of circle dances: “All my springs are in you.””
