A Hydra EDH deck.

Mana goes in, big creatures come out.

I chose Surrak Dragonclaw as my Commander because:

  • He prevents all your creatures from being countered at instant speeds. This is really important when you drain most of your resources into these mana vampires.

  • Trample

  • He's a bit costly for an instant-speed counter.Fortunately, a good chunk of creatures are comprised of mana dorks and cheap counter adders so you don't have to spend as much to get the hydras you want.

Riku of Two Reflections also makes for a good replacement if that isn't your thing. Just cast a creature, copy it, and you get twice as many hydras!

  • Copies creature spells for 2 mana

  • Copies sorceries and instants that fetch lands or add counters for just 2 mana

  • Doesn't protect your creatures in the face of the dreaded counterspells

And of course if you're one of those competitive "no fun allowed" types, Animar, Soul of Elements is also there to tag Surrak out.

  • Protection from White and Black, which are very big on removal

  • +1/+1 counters pay for the cost of (x), meaning if you get Vorel of the Hull Clade or Doubling Season out, you're going to be making a mint with these Hydras

  • Everyone and their mother runs this.

So that's it for the basics. Obviously there's nothing more than casting and swinging, the rest being self-explanatory. If you've got any suggestions what to put in, feel free to comment.
