A common problem with ramp decks is how vulnerable they are in the early game; you just don't want to block with 1/1's and 2/1's. Using walls and other creatures with defender helps with this: they generally have a high toughness, and can block creatures in the early game. A great advantage of using defenders are Overgrown Battlement and Axebane Guardian: both can generate insane amounts of mana very early on. All that mana can then be used on big powerful creatures.

Fun facts and combos:

  • It is possible to get out any creature in this deck by turn 4. In fact, it is possible to have 13 mana available by that turn (by having either 3 Overgrown Battlements or 2 those and an Axebane Guardian on the battlefield, along with four lands).

  • Colossus of Akros is a defender himself, and can help pay for his own monstrosity. It is perfectly possible to play the big guy on turn 4, then make him monstrous the next turn and make him unblockable.

Of course, this deck is not just all fun and games. Your opponent isn't going to just sit there and let all those huge creatures poke at them. They will Always be vulnerable to Doom Blade and its ilk. To prevent this, the deck includes three copies of both Mizzium Skin and Mending Touch , cheap spells that protect your creatures. Also included are three Epic Confrontation s to remove annoying creatures.

Finally, a problem I had when playtesting was that I sometimes would't draw any big creatures while having plenty of mana. To help with this, the deck includes two copies of Blighted Cataract and a copy of Ugin's Insight . The lands can be sacced when you don't need the mana any more, and the insight can similarly be used when your hand is spent and the battlefield is cluttered with mana dorks. In addition, the Ulvenwald Captive  s can be used as a mana sink in case of emergency to make some big creatures.

Finally, there is Kiora, Master of the Depths, who is absolutely amazing in this deck. The +1 helps ramp or leaves up blockers, the -2 helps digging for necessary creatures, and the ult is... well a proper ult.
