Now that JOU is up and running and weve got a full standard format again. So many people, myself included, have recently been wondering if an R/U type Counter/Burn has (or will ever have) what it takes to consistently be a viable threat in competetive play.
I had tried to do theros izzet before and always found that the the mid-game (turn 4-7) was lacking to say the least.I almost scratched the whole idea and and just say it couldn't be done.But me. . . .being the stubborn-ass, man-child that I am, just couldnt let it go. So, after banging my head against a wall for almost a month straight, arriving at dead-end, after dead-end. It finally clicked. . . .

Now. My main goal with this build, above all else was consistency. To me, that's the most important aspect of competetively play. . . . Anybody can pick a win-con, throw a couple relatively related play sets at it, and win 30% of the time. Thats not what I wanted. I think I got it.

[(DISCLAIMER)][(STRATEGIC PLAY & CRITICAL THINKING)]--REQUIRED-- This is is not one of those decks that will play itself. Like the kind that 1000s of people just go print a card list of, then purchase that list, verbatim, shuffle, draw, then just engage the autopilot, and ride their way to a top8 finish in a GP. . . But I digress. Anyway, lets move on.

MECHANICS

-This board incorporates all the classic izzet shenanigans that we all know and love.

*Burn spells for direct damage

*Full control of the board, through gratuitous use of counterspells and spot removal.

*Small creature base that hits fast and hard.

*Synergistic abilities and effects.

*and Fatal combos

-The reason this board works on a more elaborate and consistent level than most other comparable "Izzet" builds, is because of its ability to perform all of these classic "shenanigans" at the same time.

Updates Add

Ok. So ive made a couple minor changes.

1) removed Bolt of Keranos for 3 Lightning Strike

2) Moved Spite of Mogis to the sideboard to make room for a third Izzet Charm and Magma Jet

3) Dropped steam vent for Dictate of the Twin Gods

4) And added a fourth Guttersnipe because, well, I just really like Guttersnipe

Also, I put a lot of focus on improving the side board, I feel this deck needs more versatility, and the ability to use a more control oriented play style whenever the need arises. How better to counter a counter than with a counter, right? So I put a lot focus on instants.

1) Like using Goblin Pyromancer to get more of them out faster.

2)as well as Steam Augury to not only get more of them in your hand, but also more of them in your graveyard for Spellheart Chimera to benefit from.

After focusing on this sideboard im really considering implementing its approach in the mainboard and moving Guttersnipe and Young Pyromancer to the side. But im still on the fence about it. The current mainboard has proved to work, and work fast. I haven't tested this other approach and dont know if it will actually perform as well as it does in theory. I just feel that its a shame to have such an IZZET friendly card as Spellheart Chimera and not fully implement it.
