I tested some instant speed options to protect Urza for a handful of games and they did indeed perform. The level of performance was fairly debatable, however, and I don't think their inclusions improved the deck's overall performance. It's certainly important to protect the piece the entire deck revolves around from reaching a hefty Commander Tax, but the deck already has a lot of interaction pieces that can help to protect him and Crystal Shard is still the absolute best option for this purpose while also being rather flexible in it's uses outside of that purpose.

The problem I seem to continue to run into with this deck against the top tier decks is still the same as it ever was: Urza just can't grind as well as these decks and doesn't have access to as mana efficient card choices. To that end I'll be trying a new approach to see how Urza can have it's grind potential improved. Drawing more cards and having access to more resources is vital in this regard but quality options are limited. I'm going to give a Skullclamp + tokens oriented package a shot and see how that functions.

Gitaxian Probe is a card I'm beginning to feel should simply be outright replaced in this deck by Opt. Opt works as a win enabler when imprinted on Scepter and provides greater card selection at instant speed. I'm making this switch and feel good about it at the moment.
