Maybeboard

I was using Yannik in another deck and I just couldn't shake the feeling that I needed to brew a deck with him as the commander, so here we are.

This is a midrange proactive deck seeking to win by way of combo, often utilizing the commanders to do so. Below are the combos and synergies to the deck.

The early game is usually spending a couple turns getting set up with dorks, rock, spot removal, et cetra and trying to nudge yourself into a combo line. Once you decide on the line you want to take, naviagate an enterprising approach such as when a counter spell war is over or you have Silence/Veil of Summer and a decent amount of mana.

Nikara will generally be cast before Yannik. I prefer to send Nikara to exile by an Oblivion Ring effect but if Yannik gets hit, sometimes I like to send him back to the Command Zone for use (by casting) later; it's a feel of the game type thing.

The deck runs the standard suite of Abzan removal and the Oblivion Ring varients all serve as lite-removal, often pretty inoculously allowing for set up of a combo line. The fastest of the fastest decks will likely give you a sprint.

Strategies:

Inkmoth Nexus

There's a decent amount of ways to generate +1/+1 counters from Yannik and those can be placed on Inkmoth for Infect 1HKOs.

There's some infinite mana and card draw synergies throughout the deck and theoretically, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician could probably proliferate an infect win.

Man..., wouldn't that sure be something....; I'm more concerned for the board state that allows for this.

Earthcraft + Squirrel Nest

Play Squirrel Nest/Earthcraft and wait a turn.

Play Squirrel Nest/Earthcraft to make billions of squirrels and then use Gaea's Cradle for big green mana, sinking it into casting the commanders and Finale of Devastation.

Pro-tip: Use Crop Rotation to get Cradle.

Play Squirrel Nest/Earthcraft/Suture Priest and mucho vida.

Play Squirrel Nest/Earthcraft/Corpse Knight. You got more ping than a 56k dialup connection playing TF2.

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician probably gets you a lot of value, probably.

Viscera Seer might be handy along with Top or something, I dunno.

Centipedantic & Scavenger Hunt

Necro-Warder

This combo requires 2 creatures on the field and more than 13 life.

  • Sacrifice one creature to Razaketh, the Foulblooded to tutor Lion's Eye Diamond
  • Cast Lion’s Eye Diamond, and activate it, floating
  • Sacrifice your second creature to Razaketh, the Foulblooded to tutor Eternal Witness
  • Cast Eternal Witness using the mana from Lion's Eye Diamond
  • Use Eternal Witness's ETB trigger to return Lion’s Eye Diamond to hand
  • Cast Lion’s Eye Diamond, and activate it, floating
  • Sacrifice Eternal Witness to Razaketh, the Foulblooded to tutor a reanimation effect that costs 2 black mana or less (Reanimate, etc.)
  • Cast your reanimation effect to reanimate Eternal Witness ( floating)
  • Use Eternal Witness's ETB trigger to return Lion’s Eye Diamond to hand
  • Cast Lion’s Eye Diamond, and activate it, floating
  • Sacrifice Eternal Witness to Razaketh, the Foulblooded to tutor Leonin Relic-Warder
  • Cast Leonin Relic-Warder (floating )
  • Sacrifice Leonin Relic-Warder to Razaketh, the Foulblooded to tutor a reanimation effect that costs or less (Animate Dead, etc.)
  • Cast your reanimation effect with floating mana to reanimate Leonin Relic-Warder.
  • Leonin Relic-Warder triggers, exiling your reanimation effect, causing Leonin Relic-Warder to die, returning the reanimation effect, and reanimating Leonin Relic-Warder. This is an infinite loop of ETB, sacrifice, and LTB triggers.

You can also respond to Leonin Relic-Warder's enter the battlefield trigger by sacrificing it to Razaketh, the Foulblooded without disrupting the loop, enabling as many tutors as you have health to spend. From there, you should be able to piece together a wincon.

Life-Line

This combo requires 1 creature and 1 green mana.

  • Sacrifice one creature to Razaketh, the Foulblooded to tutor Life // Death
  • Cast Life // Death using your
  • With all of your lands creatures, you are now able to tutor as much as you have life/lands
  • Conversion: 1 green mana , 4 life, 1 creature -> X tutors, X+C green mana

Squirrelcraft

This requires 2 creatures, a basic land, 2 colorless, 3 green

  • Sacrifice one creature to Razaketh, the Foulblooded to tutor Earthcraft
  • Sacrifice your second creature to Razaketh, the Foulblooded to tutor Squirrel Nest
  • Enchant your basic land with Squirrel Nest
  • Use the and interaction between Earthcraft and Squirrel Nest to generate infinite 1/1 Squirrel Tokens.

These squirrels can be used to tutor bounded by life through Razaketh, the Foulblooded, infinite damage through the next attack step, infinite damage through Blood Artist, infinite card draw through Yawgmoth, Thran Physician etc.

Sun Titan & Fiend Hunter + sac outlet

  • Step 1: Cast Sun Titan
  • Step 2: ETB Trigger, return Fiend Hunter
  • Step 3: Fiend Hunter ETB Trigger, Target Sun Titan.
  • Step 4: Sun Titan is removed from the game.
  • Step 5: Sac Fiend Hunter to outlet
  • Step 6: Fiend Hunter hit's Graveyard and Sun Titan comes back into play.
  • Step 7: ETB Trigger, Return Fiend Hunter.
  • Step 8: Infinitely repeat Step 3+

Sun Titan + Karmic Guide + Animate Dead/Dance of the Dead + Sac Outlet

Assume Animate Dead and Karmic Guide are in the GY, and a cast of Sun Titan.

  • Cast Sun titan, its ETB triggers and targets Animate Dead
  • & Animate Dead ETB and enchants Karmic Guide, then Animate Dead's ability triggers
  • While the trigger is on the stack, sacrifice Sun Titan
  • Sac outlet ability resolves
  • Animate Dead's trigger resolves, returning the Karmic Guide to the battlefield and Animate Dead is sent to the graveyard.
  • Both the Animate Dead's delayed trigger and the Karmic Guide trigger go on the stack
  • With the abilities on the stack, sacrifice Karmic Guide
  • Animate Dead's ability resolves, but does nothing since Karmic Guide has already left the battlefield
  • Karmic Guide's ability resolves.
  • Sun titan returns to the battlefield and the ETB ability triggers to target Animate Dead
  • Return to &

Sun Titan + Animate Dead + Dance of the Dead

If you have both reanimation enchantments, you can loop them. You would sacrifice the Titan with his trigger on the stack, then the trigger resolves and brings back the second enchantment, which brings back Sun Titan, rinse and repeat targeting the enchantment that brought him back previously.

Karmic Guide & Fiend Hunter+ sac outlet

  • Step 1: Cast Fiend Hunter
  • Step 2: ETB Trigger, hit whatever, sac him
  • Step 3: Karmic Guide etb, targeting Fiend Hunter
  • Step 4: Fiend Hunter ETB and targets Karmic Guide
  • Step 5: Sac Fiend Hunter and his LTB effect triggers returning Karmic Guide
  • Step 6: Return to step 3

Pro-tip: Faceless Butcher can be used here instead of Fiend Hunter.

Sun Titan & Fiend Hunter + sac outlet

  • Step 1: Cast Sun Titan
  • Step 2: ETB Trigger, return Fiend Hunter
  • Step 3: Fiend Hunter ETB Trigger, Target Sun Titan.
  • Step 4: Sun Titan is removed from the game.
  • Step 5: Sac Fiend Hunter to outlet
  • Step 6: Fiend Hunter hit's Graveyard and Sun Titan comes back into play.
  • Step 7: ETB Trigger, Return Fiend Hunter.
  • Step 8: Infinitely repeat Step 3+

Need Corpse Knight out or Earthcraft + Basic Land + Inf Mana outlet

Animate Dead + Leonin Relic-Warder for infinite ETB.

There is a loop available with a sacrifice outlet:

  • Renegade Rallier (or possibly Sun Titan) targets Animate Dead
  • In response to the target, sacrifice Renegade Rallier
  • Animate Dead ETB and targets Renegade Rallier
  • Either cast or resurrect Leonin Relic-Warder who will then target Animate Dead
  • Animate Dead is exiled and Renegade Rallier dies
  • Sacrifice Leonin Relic-Warder and Animate Dead returns to the battle field, targeting Renegade Rallier
  • Renegade Rallier can revive Leonin Relic-Warder and continue this process indefinitely
Felidar Guardian + Parallax Wave is capable of flickering indefinitely which can be combined with Corpse Knight/Eternal Witness/Reclamation Sage/Renegade Rallier/Recruiter of the Guard for value or used with Earthcraft to float mana on every return of Felidar Guardian.

As well, you can technically target any creature with Parallax Wave so if your opponents have something good, you can start a train of reoccurring ETB triggers.

If your opponents have creatures out, you can Suture Priest for a win.

You can grab Lion's Eye Diamond, Lotus Petal, Horizon Canopy for mana and draw with Renegade Rallier or Sun Titan.

Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel can be thrown in to give an arbitrary amount of +1/+1 counters to any creature.

  • A. Yannik chooses Felidar and distributes counters
  • B. Parallax Wave targets Yannik and he leaves play
  • C. Felidar returns to play with a blink trigger
  • D. Blink Parallax Wave and it's LTB will occur, returning Yannik
  • E. Yannik will need to chose Felidar and distribute counters
  • F. The stack is clear until you choose to activate Parallax Wave, targeting Yannik which will result in the return of Felidar and a repeat of Step C.

Maybe swing big with Inkmoth Nexus or Nikara, Lair Scavenger

P.S. Yannik gives you an optional search trigger for his partner. As we don't have it, it's just a free shuffle.

P.S.S. Felidar Guardian + Karmic Guide + any sac outlet. Infinite ETB/Death triggers.

Centipedantic & Scavenger Hunt

This combo will result in infinite ETB, +1/+1 counters, and infinite scrying

  • Cast Karmic Guide reanimating anything
  • Cast Viscera Seer
  • Cast Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel and targeting Karmic Guide with Yannik's ETB, placing the +1/+1 counters anywhere
  • Sacrifice Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel to Viscera Seer and letting Yannik go to the graveyard, which returns Karmic Guide to the battlefield.
  • Reanimate Yannik, Scavgenging Sentinel with Karmic Guide's ETB.
  • Repeat steps 3-5

Faceless Butcher + Fiend Hunter + Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel

  • A. One of them starts in play, let's say Faceless Butcher

  • B. Fiend Hunter ETBs and targets Faceless Butcher and exiles it

  • C. Yannik ETBs and chooses Fiend Hunter to exile. There are 2 triggers: Yannik's ability to place +1/+1 and Fiend Hunter's LTB effect

  • D. As a result of the prior LTB effect, Faceless Butcher ETBs and targets Yannik and activates his reflexive triggered ability to bring back Fiend Hunter

  • E. We are back at Step B

From what I can tell, there's no difference in the order of who eats who.

This can lead to infinite generic ETBs and +1/+1 counters.

Protip: Cast Nakara fairly early and have Yannik exile her to stash her away. Get this combo off (or any of the others) while she's in exile so that she comes back to play to be used as a "free" cast draw engine.

The loop will stop with the may ability of Fiend Hunter or Yannik going back to the command zone.

Leonin Relic-Warder + Parallax Wave + Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel plays out the similarly.

  • Parallax Wave needs to be cast/on the field first,
  • then Leonin Relic-Warder to target Parallax Wave,
  • then Yannik to exiles Leonin Relic-Warder and Parallax Wave returns,
  • then Parallax Wave to exile Yannik and Leonin Relic-Warder returns,
  • Leonin Relic-Warder can target Parallax Wave to bring back Yannik (and anything else, opponents' or yours)
  • Yannick can target Leonin Relic-Warder to bring back Parallax Wave
  • Wave can target Yannick (+ anything else, do Yannik last) which will result in Leonin Relic-Warder coming back into play
  • A. Leonin Relic-Warder will have to target something, so the card is Parallax Wave which will result in Yannik and company returning
  • B. Yannik needs to target something, so the card is Leonin Relic-Warder which will result in Parallax Wave returning (CLEAN STACK)
  • C. Using Parallax Wave, target Yannik and anything else which will result in Leonin Relic-Warder returning to play
  • D. Return to A.

Corpse Knight, Suture Priest, Eternal Witness, Renegade Rallier, Sun Titan can be used for value triggers. Lotus Petal is a good target. There is a clean stack during Step B in the above Everything can used with Earthcraft to float mana on every return.

Leonin Relic-Warder + Oblivion Ring + Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel

  1. O-Ring in play,
  2. Leonin Relic-Warder targets O-Ring,
  3. Yannik chooses Leonin Relic-Warden resulting in two different triggers
  4. Yannik has a trigger of distributing +1/+1 counters and Leonin Relic-Warden has it's LTB trigger
  5. O-Ring returns due to Leonin Relic-Warden and targets Yannik, activating his reflexive triggered ability and bringing back Leonin Relic-Warder
  6. Leonin Relic-Warder returns to target O-Ring, bringing back Yannik
  7. Yannik ETB triggers and he chooses Leonin Relic-Warder, resulting in 2 triggers: Leonin Relic-Warder LTB and Yannik distributing +1/+1 counters
  8. O ring will return and have an ETB, needing to target Yannik which will result in activating his reflexive triggered ability etc. etc.

This can lead to infinite +1+/1 counters, Earthcraft taps, Renegade Rallier triggers, and Corpse Knight pings.

These last 2 combos can be performed with Fiend Hunter or Faceless Butcher instead of Yannik as well.

Oblivion Ring + Parallax Wave + Felidar Guardian + Leonin Relic-Warder

  • Felidar is on the battlefield
  • Parallax Wave targets Felidar
  • O-Ring targets Parallax Wave
  • Felidar returns blinking O-Ring
  • Parallax Wave returns and O-Ring returns, needing a target
  • O-Ring targets Felidar
  • A. Leonin Relic-Warder targets O-Ring and Felidar returns to blink something
  • B. Parallax Wave targets Leonin Relic-Warder, O-Ring returns to target Parallax Wave
  • C. Leonin Relic-Warder returns to target O-Ring and Parallax Wave returns (CLEAN STACK)
  • D. Parallax Wave targets Felidar and Leonin Relic-Warder and O-Ring returns
  • E. The only target for O-Ring is Parallax Wave, so Felidar (and company) returns to blink something and Leonin Relic-Warder needs to target an A/E
  • F. Leonin Relic-Warder targets O-Ring and Parallax Wave is returned (CLEAN STACK)
  • G. Parallax Wave targets Felidar (and company) and Leonin Relic-Warder, returning O-Ring
  • H. Return to E.

Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel + Parallax Wave + Felidar Guardian + Leonin Relic-Warder

  • Felidar on the battlefield,
  • Yannik chooses Felidar
  • Wave targets Yannik resulting in Felidar returning to blink something
  • Cast Leonin Relic-Warder and target Parallax Wave; while Leonin Relic-Warder is on the stack, Parallax Wave targets Felidar
  • Parallax Wave will be exiled by Leonin Relic-Warder and Felidar will return with a blink while Yannik needs to choose a creature to exile
  • Yannik will choose Leonin Relic-Warder and this results in the return of Parallax Wave (OPEN STACK)
  • % Parallax Wave can target Felidar and Yannik (do him last); Yannik's exile brings back Leonin Relic-Warder
  • Leonin Relic-Warder can target Parallax Wave which will result in the return of a Felidar blink and Yannik ETB trigger
  • Choose Leonin Relic-Warder with Yannik's ETB trigger which will exile Leonin Relic-Warder and bring back Parallax Wave (OPEN STACK) (THIS STARTS A REPEAT RETURNING TO %)

This can lead to infinite mana if you use Felidar Guardian to hit lands (and +1/+1 counters)(Maybe tokens if you hit Regal Caracal).

Additionally, you can do a really roundabout method of Squirrel Nest without Earthcraft by alternating the Felidar flickers from the land to the aura back to the land back to the aura, etc etc.

Regrowth and Eternal Witness can give more activations of Finale of Devastation for haste.

I think an important to thing to note is that the loops could probably start a couple different ways and not just "gotta get to step one". I dunno, I'll have to play-test more and see what happens.

We got Tainted Pact and we got reanimation spells.

'Naw mean?
