Enchantment (2)

Instant (2)

Without sideboard, this deck runs about $70USD. For an extreme budget version, remove the Dranas for 2x Grotesque Mutation and Gideons for 2x Ariel Responder or Bloodbond Vampire bringing the total to the price of an Intro Deck!!!

My partner wanted to create a budget deck with as much drain as possible while still being somewhat competitive, and super annoying.

Drana, Liberator of Malakir can create a lot of value for your other allies with the First Strike and Flying. (Note: Drana's first strike damage will add the +1/+1 counter on other attackers before they deal damage!) Captain's Claws just adds even more on top...

This is definitely a great starter deck on a great budget. Easy to play, very effective and some great high points of play. Every card has synergy together due to Rally, and Ayli those can be replaced by Expedition Envoy if you'd prefer the 1drop Ally to curve into an early Mutation.

Sideboard wise:

Call the Bloodline is a concession to the currently popular U/R Fevered Visions, allowing you to discard AND get value out of it.

Vampiric Rites for control matchups - sacrifice the creature in response to removal and gain some advantage back.

Fumigate good against tokens in my area, can clear spiders from Ishkanah, Grafwidow etc.

Updates Add

The removal of Odric and Bloodbond did well to speed up the deck, and Odric was losing us damage with Drana.

R1 vs Abzan Control (GameDay winner soi/emn): 2W 1L

First game kept a slow hand, and just got outpaced. Game 2 and 3 had fast hands and just drained before the control could set up or get mana.

R2 vs 4c Planeswalkers: 2W 0L

Allies was just too fast for the Planeswalkers to get setup on all 4 colours of mana.

R3 vs UG Crush (biggest name at the store): 1W 2L

All 3 games were super tight and their Jaddi Offshoot let them keep up in life. Got mana stuck in game 2. Game 3 went to time, and he took 4 of the 5 additional turns with Part the Waterveil chain for the win. Most enjoyable match up in a while.

R4 vs Mono U Eldrazi: 2W 0L

Game 1 was close, winning on 2 life, but game 2 was just perfect hand perfect draws.

Overall 3-1 placing 3rd out of about 22. Not bad for a pretty budget deck. Gideon and captains claws made no notable appearances tonight at all, and the 1 drops would have been more useful. Gideon is still house in this deck though.
