your head a splode

I have played this in a couple of events now and am convinced that there is a way to make it more competitive. As it is, this deck is fun to play but inconsistent.

Strategy:

Objective 1: Ramp into Scuttling Doom Engine using some combination of Generator Servant, Chief Engineer and Springleaf Drum .

Objective 2: Create a difficult-to-manage threat using Ensoul Artifact on Ornithopter, Darksteel Citadel, or Springleaf Drum .

Win Condition: After getting the opponent "in range" with the above tactics, burn for the win using some combination of Shrapnel Blast, Stoke the Flames or Lightning Strike.

Thoughts:

  1. I was running Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time because I'm going to be losing card advantage due to Ensoul Artifact targets being removed or using Generator Servant's sac ability. Turns out, if it gets to the point in the game where I need to grind out card advantage to get the edge, I've already lost.

  2. I am not sure what role Goblin Rabblemaster plays anymore. In this deck (format I guess) he eats removal all day, and so I end up with a goblin token to show for it sometimes. If I had more Stoke the Flames he would probably be more worth it.

  3. I need to look at the mana base--I am getting screwed a little too much. I am looking at adding one Evolving Wilds to bring it up to 22 lands. If I hit 4 lands in a game, I am usually set.

  4. Replacing Swiftwater Cliffs with more Shivan Reef would be highly desirable. I do not think scrylands would help--this deck does not really benefit from taking it slow.

  5. I am curious to see if there is a role for Monastery Swiftspear in this deck, but I am not all that sure about it.

  6. More maindeck burn might be in order--Magma Jet could help.

  7. Considering Scouring Sands instead of Arc Lightning . When tokens are involved, I find myself needing to kill more than 3.

Played in Win-A-Box at new LGS. 15 people there, went 2-2.

Round 1: Abzan Midrange Deck really came through for me on this one. I got the removal I needed and was able to push through a bunch of damage. Second game I had a hand with 4x Lightning Strike. Not gonna call that skill. 2-0

Round 2: Abzan Aggro This one was trickier. He had a little more gas than I could handle, plus removal for what I managed to push through. They were close games, though, I was able to really threaten but in the end he stabilized and swarmed. 0-2

Round 3: Jeskai Fireworks As long as I remove Seeker of the Way this matchup goes okay. As pointed out, I don't have great ways of dealing with large fliers like Stormbreath Dragon. Since UR has trouble with things already on the board (don't I know it) I was able to edge this one out. 2-1

Round 4: Abzan Control Mana screw, 2 and 1 lands. Not much else to say. 0-2

-1 Treasure Cruise -1 Dig Through Time

+2 Stubborn Denial (main) +2 Phyrexian Revoker (side)

Singing Bell Strike moved to side. Disdainful Stroke to main.
