Want to get into Modern with a fun, fair and awesome pack ? Have a look
The aesthetic of Midrange
First of all, you should read all of Reid Duke's work on playing Midrange in modern.
Here's a link to his first work : https://www.channelfireball.com/articles/thoughtseizes-and-fatal-pushes-part-i/
In my opinion, Midrange is the best play of playing Magic: You play good cards, you answer their good cards, you have a lot of discards against unfair deck ( Tron, Storm, KCI and such ) and most of all ... It feels really good to play midrange.
A good midrange player is incredible to spectate, watching Reid Duke play this deck at Pro Tour Amonkhet was one of my most enriching Mtg experience as a player. It takes time and a LOT of knowledge to be a good midrange player, but it's worth it. Believe me.
There is no infinite combo, no hardlock, no Teifeiri Hero of Dominaria or counterspells, no 7 mana on Turn 3 ... Just fair and honest Magic. This is midrange.
1 . How do we win ?
-
card:Tamogoyf is one of the best creature of all time. With his unique design, he can hit the battlefield on T2 as a 3/4. And he grows fast, believe. In some match-up, a 6/7 Tarmogoyf is common.
-
Tireless Tracker
is a fantastic card. I'm currently playing 3 Trackers instead of Dark Confidant for painless card advantage and a better beater. Her capacity of turning dead landdrop into card advantage AND +1/+1 counter is fantastic. Devastating card if unanswered.
-
Liliana of the Veil
the best Planeswalker in modern. ( Unless you're a degenerate Tron player who plays Karn Liberated ). Her +1 is devastating against control, grow our goyf and flayer, send Lingering Souls into graveyard etc etc ... Her -2 is a fantastic removal, as it can hit Indestructible and Hexproof creatures ( And it's only a -2 !!!) Playing her on curve on Turn 3, if our opponent doesn't have a answer the following turn it's GG.
2 . Alternative Win-con
-
Grim Flayer
can be an alternative wincon by itself. He's already pretty good without delirium, but once you managed to buff him ( Thanks to
Grisly Salvage
or so ) he is a 4/4 Trample that produce pseudo-card advantages AND can put your
Lingering Souls
in the yard. He is quite expensive for a Budget List ( I got mine for 8€ / each ), but he is worth it, trust me.
-
Lingering Souls
is our bread and butter. Can be use both in offense and defense; can be flashback, kills planeswalker, all around awesome. This card is the main reason people play White and Black in modern.
-
Sorin, Solemn Visitor
as a 2-off Liliana of the veil budget alternative. Wonderful with lingering souls, and an all around solid Planeswalker.
3 . Disruption, Removals, utility, all the good stuff
-
Inquisition of Kozilek
if you are playing black, you have to play this. This is good in EVERY match-ups, and this card alone can shutdown entire strategies on the spot. Plus, it improves our match-ups against Combo on game 1.
-
Path to Exile
Best.Removal.of.the.format.
-
Fatal Push
kills so many things in the format, it's a must have.
-
Assassin's Trophy
Arguably as good as Path to Exile. This is our emergency card when we need something REALLY dead. Think before using trophy on something, as the extra land drop can backfire in some matchups.
Final Note
I've been playing this deck every weak for about a year now, I think the decks have tremandous potentials to do extremely well in modern. There's room for improvement, of course, but the all-around synergie and theme of the deck makes it a blast to play. I'm open to suggestion, and thanks for watching my deck !!
