+1 for description. Very creative way to get me to look at the page since most of these decks are so similar and I've seen multiple already. It's almost like you should work in Marketing. Dare I say, "Telemarketing"? Crickets

Anyways I really like the Eidolon of Rhetoric as it's a personal favorite of mine.

hey what would you be calling if you actually called that number? Do you know?

Only thing I was thinking, you might want to drop Murderous Redcap since it can't be hit by Collected Company, and the other infinite combos are enough to cause a win. Either way, great deck!

@Minelia5
I have no idea who you would call if you dialed 1-800-COMPANY, and I don't recommend trying it lol.
I like Murderous Redcap because it allows for a way around opposing infinite life combos and also helps us win against decks like Infect or Affinity that don't necessarily kill by way of damage (in the case of Affinity, this is because of Inkmoth Nexus). However, I will take your suggestion into consideration!

Very cool deck! I play a similar list, Collected Congregation, although I think I may need to consider some of your card choices and implement them in my list. I never thought of Varolz, the Scar-Striped as another sac outlet. In regards to Minelia5's comment about Murderous Redcap - have you considered running Blood Artist? It can be hit by Collected Company and has also put my opponents in some very awkward situations where they are unable to board wipe due to the Blood Artist triggers killing them.

I still quite like Redcap for being able to go straight to the face. I'll need to do some more experimenting with both options before landing on one side or the other, but I figured the suggestion couldn't hurt.

I'm also curious about your thoughts on running the Archangel of Thune + Spike Feeder combo. I've seen some lists that run 1 of each, but I'm not sure that it's worth the slots.

DaftVader says... #9

You run melira, you run persist stuff, you run tutors, WHERE ARE THE SAC OUTLETS! (Viscera Seer can only go so far)

June 4, 2015 12:55 p.m.

TheFanatic says... #10

@JoshRigone Thanks for your input! Blood Artist will go in the maybeboard for now. As for the AngelFeeder combo, I'm not sold in it. Spike Feeder is effectively useless in its own, and Archangel of Thune is a tad too expensive for my tastes at 5 mana.

@DaftVader I run 2 Viscera Seer and 1 Varolz, the Scar-Striped. I think 3 sac outlets is the maximum amount this deck wants, given that it can easily find one with that number. I don't want to have too many since they are pretty underpowered outside of the combo.

I completely understand about Spike Feeder. I was very leery at first as well, but I've found that even merely as a life-gaining tool it is worth it. Granted, I play against a high number of aggro and Burn decks, so those results are most certainly skewed to some degree. As for Archangel of Thune - I think that she requires 7 or 8 mana dorks in the list to be reasonably sure you can cast her, so I very much appreciate your skepticism given your current configuration.

The main reason that I find the combo so enticing is my desire to board out the Merlia/Anafenza combo and play a much longer and interactive game post-board. Archangel of Thune + Spike Feeder allows me to trim down to only 2 combo pieces and make room for a robust disruption package.

Also, I just added Varolz, the Scar-Striped to my main board this week and he was a house in every round of my local Modern event. SO happy that I saw your list with him!

TheFanatic says... #12

@JoshRigone I noticed when looking at your list that you don't actually run Spike Feeder and Archangel of Thune in your own deck. Is this a new development, or were just talking theoretically about how you think they would perform?

I'm glad Varolz is working out for you. I like him a lot as a hard-to-kill sac outlet that can actually attack for damage. His Scavenge ability hasn't been relevant for me yet, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have it on there.

June 4, 2015 8:59 p.m.

JoshRigone says... #13

Yeah, I do run the AngelFeeder combo, just haven't had the time to update the list. I agree that Varolz's scavenge text is mostly irrelevant, though I have run into a couple of situations where it has won me some games. It also makes Thoughtseize/Inquisition of Kozilek choices for opponents more difficult when they know that I'll just gain value off of the creature they pitched anyway.

I was in the process of making a deck like this. Essentially the only difference is that I run some discard mainboard and I also run some removal mainboard. Also, I run Qasali Pridemage mainboard.

June 6, 2015 1:52 p.m.

TheFanatic says... #15

@firefox46 At one point, I ran 2 Abrupt Decay main and at another point I ran 2 Path to Exile main instead. Qasali Pridemage has been in and out of the maindeck. I like him, but I wanted to try cutting the removal spells for a fourth Chord of Calling and a Wall of Roots, so Qasali Pridemage came out to make room for Fiend Hunter as tutorable removal.

A singleton Siege Rhino might be beneficial, since you're already running the colors. Restoration Angel also works well with some of your enter the battlefield effects. Works wonders with the Rhino, but also with Murderous Redcap and Kitchen Finks.

June 8, 2015 1:31 p.m.

TheFanatic says... #17

@Saljen Since this deck doesn't really want creatures that cost more than 3 mana unless they are either a part of a combo or can win games on their own (Linvala, Keeper of Silence does this against some decks), I don't think Siege Rhino is a good fit here. Restoration Angel could be a decent Chord of Calling target given the deck's many ETB effects, and I've seen some lists running her. She'll go to the maybeboard for now. Thanks!

It seems really difficult to cast murderous redcap or fulminator mage in this deck. How often are you able to cast them on curve?

June 12, 2015 12:56 p.m.

TheFanatic says... #19

@TheGreatLiar Just about every time, actually. If you think about it, it makes sense. Since we have 8 fetches (all can fetch a black land) and 3 black lands, a full 50% of our mana base can produce black mana. We also have Birds of Paradise to help cast black cards. I've been considering cutting a Forest for another Overgrown Tomb to help make this even better, but so far I haven't needed to and the insurance against Blood Moon seems better than the insurance against mana screw.

Good points. One other question regarding the list. Have Abrupt Decay, and pridemage been enough to deal with Grafdigger's Cage? The card cuts of your combo and 8 mainboard cards, and is a pretty common sideboard option to shut down storm and snapcaster. Have you run into issues with it?

June 12, 2015 4:09 p.m.

TheFanatic says... #21

@TheGreatLiar I've only encountered Grafdigger's Cage once. When I did, it was annoying but I actually just ignored it. My opponent (who was on Jund) had kept a pretty weak hand on the hopes that they could just "get me" with the cage, and he quickly died to beatdowns from my creatures with Gavony Township. This probably isn't a typical situation, but it's the only experience I have playing against the card.

shmevin11 says... #22

I like the deck but I do have a question about it. Minus the combos, what are your ways of winning? Is it beating your opponents in the face with 2/2s? I mean no disrespect because I like the look of the deck but I was confused.

June 16, 2015 7:20 p.m.

TheFanatic says... #23

@shmevin11
The deck's primary win conditions are the various combos, which are actually very common what with Collected Company and Chord of Calling to find combo pieces.
The secondary win condition is beating the opponent down. You make this plan sound ineffective by phrasing it as "beating your opponents in the face with 2/2s". However, you have to keep in mind that the deck runs Gavony Township to make the whole team bigger, Voice of Resurgence to provide huge tokens, Scavenging Ooze for a large, life-gaining creature, Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit for bolstering the team, and Noble Hierarch and Qasali Pridemage for their exalted triggers. This deck isn't completely inept in combat -- in fact, it's exceptionally good at it for a combo deck. The innate two-for-one value of many of the cards (Kitchen Finks, Collected Company, and Eternal Witness in particular) allows the deck to be effective at grinding out creature combat wins. It's not better at this than dedicated beatdown decks like Zoo and Affinity, but that's what the combos are for.

Okay, I see now. Sorry about that it seems to work better in game opposed to play testing. It is an interesting deck and I hope you success with it!

Ok. So I've actually put a very similar paper list together, the only match-up I'm having a fairly hard time with is g/r tron. the only option seems to be fulminator in the side and holding up 6 mana for a chorded fiend hunter to exile emrakul or ulamog at instant speed.

What are you doing for this match-up?
