ABZAN DORAN, DORAN

Spoiled Assault Formation for myself and was stricken with a thought: can a deck filled with enormous creatures be competitive?

With the new card from DTK on it's way to being released, I threw this build together to get my Tappedout communities' approval as to whether or not it stands a chance in the current meta. If not, what can I do to possibly make this "prospect" worthy of taking to a weekly or even PPTQ.

Please help make your inner Timmy breathe a sigh of relief as he witnesses a build with big fat creatures can in fact run with the big boys.

Besides being a nightmare against Burn, this deck has a few things going for it so let's check it out:

RAMP

Birds of Paradise: 1-drop mana fixer. Churns our behemoths out. It flies so that we aren't completely blown out by evasion. It can also be pumped to swoop in for the win.

Noble Hierarch: She may be old but man she is a beauty. Ramps and Pumps. Her "exalted" ability strengthens our giants (more copies in play, more triggers).

Treefolk Harbinger: Fetches Forest, tutors Doran, the Siege Tower or Sapling of Colfenor . Tip: Play this, tutor Doran to top of deck, swing with Sapling= gain 5 life and draw Doran.

*It is still worth noting that both Birds and Hierarch are amazing cards on their own. What they lack in offense they more than make up for with their abilities. In this deck though, a majority of the time they will hit with a base power of 1...

DISRUPTION

Path to Exile: Our instant speed removal. It is highly favored when utilizing or splashing . Relieves us of any problem creatures within the meta: Pestermite, Deceiver Exarch, Siege Rhino, Tasigur, the Golden Fang, ect.

Thoughtseize: Choice discard in modern. Helps give us an edge against combo and control as we pick apart their puny forces and ruin their feeble plans.

WINCONS

Assault Formation: It's a major out for this build. All our giants hit WAY harder as soon as T2. A cool thing to mention is that it's second activated ability can be a sweet combat trick that works as a psuedo- Defiant Strike for EVERY one of our creatures.

Doran, the Siege Tower: Assault Formation on legs. Our "Big Hitter" that enables more "Big Hitting".

Sapling of Colfenor : An exciting one-of. Indestructible creature with added card advantage that digs for it's friends. A nightmare for Burn as drawing a Doran, the Siege Tower nets us 5 life.

Spellskite: Swing with Spellskite? In this deck you can. Crazy good in the meta and crazy good in this deck as it synergizes perfectly in our build. Obviously, it will take a literal bullet for any of our major hitter's and can now hit just as hard.

Courser of Kruphix: An ok card as it stands alone, but in the right deck she's great; she was made for ours. As always, perfect against Burn. She digs for lands and interacts very well with Fetches, Shocks, Horizon Canopy, Murmuring Bosk and Dryad Arbor.

Lingering Souls: It's a veritable Time Walk. Chumps anything.

Tower Defense : Game ending combat trick for . In concert with Souls and it's flashback tokens, we can swing for 24 in a single turn with Doran, the Siege Tower or Assault Formation in play.

Marble Titan : Such a funny card. In the right deck (this one) it is our psuedo-Ensnaring Bridge lock. It basically pins the opponent down as our sluggers smash their face.

COMBOS

Assault Formation + Spellskite (just one of many interactions w/ assault formation)

Marble Titan w/ EVERYBODY

Doran, the Siege Tower + Sapling of Colfenor + Treefolk Harbinger

Dryad Arbor + Treefolk Harbinger
