Animar, Soul of Elements EDH

Commander / EDH

Animar was my first commander deck when I started playing EDH. I remember reading Sheldon Menery's play-by-play article when I was looking at which commander to choose and was really intrigued by how the deck played. I have played EDH for years, and Animar remains my favorite deck to play.

I would consider my Animar build to be competitive without being too degenerate. I prefer it this way. I know that there are plenty of other cards that could be used to make the deck more competitive or explosive, but I have chosen these cards for their balance in my normal play group. There are a lot of decision trees and can have long turns, so learn to play the deck quickly to avoid your fellow players feeling like you are just playing solitaire. The deck is highly adaptable, and can be adjusted to many different play styles, budgets, and competitiveness.

This version of the deck is built around bounce effects and casting multiple creatures in the couple of turns after Animar is cast, in order to ramp out the bigger creatures or get Animar to a one/two hit kill. This deck normally wins through Animar commander damage or a large swing with all creatures pumped by Thunderfoot Baloth.

I run a large number of draw cards and creatures that put lands directly into play. Because tapping out to go wide with creatures is so important to the deck in the first few turns and how quickly it can accelerate, it will always draw a wrath from a prepared opponent. Putting lots of lands into play and retaining cards in hand after you have gotten Animar big enough is crucial to being able to rebuild after a board wipe. I have often been able to rebuild to the same or better position that I was at before.
