The Evolution of a Pre-Con

My friends and I purchased the C18 Commander decks when they released and decided to try and play them against each other straight out of the box. I chose the Saheeli deck because I've always had a soft spot for artifacts. I had so much fun playing this deck that I decided to continue to evolve it, but with Brudiclad at the helm instead of Saheeli. Since then, it's been one of my go-to Commander decks.

General Strategy

This deck is relatively straightforward in what it's trying to accomplish in a game of Magic. It wants to do the following, preferably in order:

This deck is mana-hungry. Your commander costs 4 and you want it in play yesterday. Brudiclad generates value for you every turn and is the heart of what makes this deck more than just a pile of token generation and aritfacts.

In order to make sure he comes down ASAP, you'll need to prioritize your efficient artifact ramp spells when deciding whether to mulligan. Your first couple of turns will almost always be spent playing cards like Talisman of Creativity, Etherium Sculptor, and Izzet Signet.

Once you're past the crucial six mana point, some of your ramp cards will also pull double-duty as token generators. For example, Curse of Opulence is an all-star in this deck since it both enables you to cast Brudiclad early, encourages your opponents to attack the cursed player, and generates tokens for Brudiclad to transmute in later turns.

As this section's title implies, both token quality and token quantity matter in this deck. Your objective isn't necessarily to make as many tokens as possible. Other colors do that better and other Commanders are better at going wide. What you really want to do is to generate one really good token and have at least a few others to become copies of that one.

This is actually happens pretty naturally since both and have ample methods to generate token copies of your own creatures as well as opponents' creatures. Since Brudiclad and other cards in your deck will generate other kinds of tokens in larger quantities, it becomes a balancing act of trying to decide when to pull the trigger to copy your opponent's Baneslayer Angel and suddenly make your motley crew of thopters, treasure tokens, and clues into formidable threats.

Notice that Brudiclad's ability transforms all your tokens into a copy of the chosen token on resolution. This is an all-or-nothing ability and the effect doesn't end at end of turn, which many people forget. You can also make a token in response to the his ability trigger at the beginning of combat. This is incredibly powerful when leveraged at the right time to take the table by surprise.
