I adore alternate win scenarios, so when I was browsing the Modern format card pool and stumbled across Biovisionary I just had to build around him.
•Breeding Pool is a fascinating glimpse into the wonders of the natural world. Rife with algae, a large and diverse group of photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms, it lends the otherwise waters a semi-opaque sheen of .
•Use Misty Rainforest to locate the aforementioned land.
•The basic Island will be doing most of the work in our deck, being our main source of .
•The basic Forest is also included as a precautionary measure against Blood Moon.
While the vast majority of deck archetypes will engage in some combination of creature attacks or direct damage spells, that is not the strategy we will employ. It seems the wild-haired-wizard quoted above understands how we intend to pilot our deck. Through manifestations of non-violent resistance, let’s show the opponent that we put the fist in pacifist.
•Cast Counterspell targeting a particularly onerous spell on the stack and watch it go up in flames.
•Mana Leak is just so good at thwarting impending acts of violence. Rarely will our opponent have an extra available, thus making this card a more versatile counter spell.
•Remand excels at staving off the inevitable while opening us up for potential countermeasures of our own by way of a replacement draw.

It’s Orientation Day, so introductions are in order.
Biovisionary appears to be a perfectly run of the mill Human Wizard creature, at 2/3 for .
But what’s this? An alternate wincon?
That’s correct, and what’s most surprising is precisely when the check is made to determine if the conditions are met. The first time I examined the card’s text, I misread it. I simply assumed it would check for 4 creatures named Biovisionary at the beginning of your upkeep, but that’s not the case. It checks “at the beginning of the end step”—which means two things.
First, if we choose to cast the final 4th copy necessary to win on our turn, we can avoid Sorcery speed removal completely. Second, owing to the specific wording on the win parameter we can actually win on the opponent’s turn, during their end step. Since it states “the end step” and not “your end step”, we can get away with casting a spell like Mirrorweave on our opponent’s turn, just before their end step for the win.
Biovisionary alone definitely won’t be winning any matches. To win, we must capitalize on its rather unique stipulation for victory. This means inducing cellular mitosis as quickly as possible to create carbon copies of Mr. Wizard.
•Phantasmal Image is probably the fastest way to duplicate Biovisionary. A somewhat unstable creature, this clone will keel over dead if someone looks at it funny. Should this become our 4th copy, all well and good, but let’s look into a more resilient method of cloning our subject.
•Phyrexian Metamorph is potentially costlier, at , but far more robust. Cast our phyrexian phriend and move one step closer toward victory.
•Quasiduplicate is an excellent way to propagate our wincon. Cast it once from your hand, then from your graveyard the following turn.
•Druid's Deliverance is a fantastic follow up play after Quasiduplicate. It’s cheap, produces another viable Biovisionary, and can forestall combat damage we’d otherwise have to take on the chin.
•Mitotic Manipulation is part tutor, part Dig Through Time. Like special access to university research materials, we get the privilege of sifting through our library to look for another Biovisionary to complete the set.
A Reminder Show
•Cast Mirrorweave to induce a chemical change on a molecular level in all creatures in play, transforming them into temporary clones of Biovisionary.

•Cast Phantasmal Image/Phyrexian Metamorph/Quasiduplicate/Mitotic Manipulation/Mirrorweave/Druid's Deliverance or another Biovisionary, working toward having 4 copies in play simultaneously.
•When the last spell either copying or reproducing Biovisionary resolves and it becomes either player’s end step, voila! You win the game.
•How many dirty, stinkin’ ape tokens does it take to irritate your opponents? Four. 1 dirty, stinkin’ ape token to take the place of their formidable creature threat, and 3 dirty, stinkin’ ape tokens to throw feces at each other. Make Peter Griffin proud with Pongify.
•Stern Dismissal is here to bolster our ability to stay afloat long enough to get our requisite 4 copies of Biovisionary in play. Simply bounce an attacking creature back to the opponent’s hand and avoid the hassle.
•Surgical Extraction goes hand in hand with our counterspells; fizzle one threat, then prevent any others from being cast again.
•A playset of Metamorphic Alteration as a contingency for the scenario in which Biovisionary is hiding in the middle of the library. This way, we can still cast Phyrexian Metamorph (targeting one of our opponent’s creatures for the time being) and then later on, after we finally get a Biovisionary in play, turn it into him instead.
