Let me know how the testing goes. I think it to be a cool dragon and will try to get my hands on one of those too.

Will do, I just ordered it. I'm also thinking about putting in another haste enabler, bringing my total to 6. The most efficient options I have left are Mass Hysteria, Racecourse Fury, and Mark of Fury. Personally I'm thinking Mass Hysteria: it helps my opponents but it comes down T1 and, unlike Racecourse Fury, is immune to LD.

It depends on your group. Mine doesn't play LD at all, making the aura the bedt option to me. Besides, why would you give free haste to your opponents?
September 27, 2015 12:42 a.m.
Thanks, but I'm already running it. It lets me take an arbitrary amount of combat steps with Aggravated Assault or Hellkite Charger, or burn the board with Scourge of Kher Ridges.

I'm considering taking out Basalt Monolith. It's in here mainly for the combo with Rings of Brighthearth to generate infinite colorless mana, but I have yet to actually have both cards. It also doesn't generate more mana than I'm putting in, so it doesn't ramp the turn it comes out. I was thinking of replacing it with Puppet Strings or Fellwar Stone.

With all the mana you already have I thing that the Strings might be a bit more useful. That or that Thornbite Staff on your maybe board. If you prefer to go for the mana route, you also have a better option on your maybe board: Braids of Fire. I'd use any of those instad of Stone or Strings.

So just thought I'd share a fun anecdote. I was testing this deck last night and managed to tutor for 6 dragons at once (and two at the end of the turn before mine) for an insurmountable victory. Here is the play (I had quite a few Snow-Covered Mountains due to a Rites of Flourishing, as well as a Caged Sun and Gauntlet of Might).
- At the end of my opponent's turn I tutor with Zirilan and copy with Rings of Brighthearth (Zirilan has haste because of Lightning Greaves so I cannot target him with Puppet Strings) and grab Scourge of Valkas and Utvara Hellkite.
- Untap, Mainphase
- Switch the Lightning Greaves to Scourge of Valkas
- Use Zirilan's ability (1 on stack)
- Copy with Rings of Brighthearth (2 on stack)
- Use Puppet Strings to untap (1 Puppet left)
- Copy with Rings of Brighthearth (2 Puppet left)
- Copy of Puppet Strings resolves, untapping Zirilan (1 Puppet left)
- Use Zirilan's ability (3 on stack)
- Copy with Rings of Brighthearth (4 on stack)
- Original Puppet Strings resolves, untapping Zirilan (0 Puppet left)
- Use Zirilan's ability (5 on stack)
- Copy with Rings of Brighthearth (6 on stack)
From here the tutors resolve first in last out, so starting with the most recent copy I grab Spawn of Thraxes, Thunder Dragon, Hellkite Charger, Worldgorger Dragon, Changeling Berserker (targeting Worldgorger Dragon), and finally Knollspine Dragon. So, each of these triggers Scourge of Valkas but the Worldgorger Dragon blinks them all, allowing me to deal 6 damage 6 times after the first round of damage and then a final 7 from Knollspine. I won at this moment but Worldgorger Dragon untapped my lands and Zirilan, allowing me to continue by tutoring for 2 more dragons and playing my 30+ cards from Knollspine Dragon.
I don't know if I've had a more satisfying finish than this.

And your friends? Bet they became meer acquaintances. :P
October 22, 2015 7:26 a.m.
My friend was playing this deck last night and had just about the best opening hand I've ever seen. Turn one he had a Snow-Covered Mountain, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Worn Powerstone, and Voltaic Key, followed by a turn two Steel Hellkite, followed by a turn three Utvara Hellkite, which lead into a turn four Fervor and Zirilan of the Claw and a tutor for Scourge of the Throne which killed one person and left two of us at 4 and 1 life, respectively. It was miserable and I loved it.

Thoughts on Belbe's Portal as another cheat onto the battlefield effect. Also what about Fork style cards that allow you to abuse opponents strong instant and sorcery. Sounds like Justin had a fun time last night ;)
December 24, 2015 2:58 p.m.
I think Safe Haven would be a good utility, if you could fit it in as well.
December 24, 2015 4:13 p.m.
@flluid: Yeah, Justin was very happy to win so early. But I think I'm good with just the Quicksilver Amulet and Sneak Attack, because if I really need to get a dragon into play from my hand I can using Hoarding Dragon to grab the amulet.
@Jg112: That land would be cool but it doesn't tap for mana and I can't risk drawing into early and being a mana behind the rest of the game.

I love your deck - you get a +1 from me - and I've been thinking about building Zirilan forever. I do have a few quick questions and suggestions, however. First, why are you playing the fetches in a mono-colored deck? Just curious - deck thinning is a tiny effect in EDH, and I don't see any landfall effects. Second, have you considered Blood Moon and Extraplanar Lens? They're both amazing cards in any deck that can play them, and you're playing enough basics that it shouldn't hurt you much.
March 24, 2016 12:11 p.m.
The fetches are to reshuffle cards that I put on top of my deck from Scroll Rack and (soon) Sensei's Divining Top. I guess I forgot to update the deck since I've added Scroll Rack haha. On Blood Moon and Extraplanar Lens, I have the Lens in the deck already. Blood Moon I've considered but my meta is mostly mono and dual colored decks with basic lands so it doesn't help very much. If my group ran more non-basics it would definitely be an auto-include.

In that case, Madblind Mountain might be very helpful for extra shuffle effects? :)

I would highly recommend Blood Moon and Mana Geyser from your maybeboard. The first is amazing land-hate, and the second should give you 15 mana T5 assuming you're playing multiplayer (also, make sure to get the foil because it's gorgeous).
Have you considered Ruination?
June 23, 2016 1:52 p.m.
Mana Geyser I've been toying with. It works great in my Kaervek the Merciless deck and turn 5 is hopefully when I'll have enough stuff on the board to try and kill someone. Just not sure what to take out for it.
Blood Moon is great and would be in here, but my group mostly plays two-colored commanders which leads to their decks being mostly basics. If I was in a meta with more 3-color decks and less green it would be awesome. Same with Ruination. I think I'll actually switch both of them over to the sideboard.

I'm excited for the potential in Hanweir Battlements. It will be replacing Scrying Sheets when Eldritch Moon releases. Also hoping for a red Eldrazi Dragon :)

Vandalblast --> Shattering Spree -- Vandalblast requires one counterspell, whereas shattering spree requires many counterspells. For the typical number of artifacts to be destroyed, they are around the same mana cost. You can also play Shattering Spree through some hard stax pieces. I might recommend running both honestly. A single well timed Torpor Orb will rek u.
Fetchlands + Rings of Brighthearth = Ramp. Fetchlands on their own thin libraries.
Crucible of Worlds -- recur fetches, value lands, ... what if you don't manage to save your lands from destruction?
Main board: Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast -- so much utility. If this deck is competitive, you know you will be facing blue. At one point or another, someone will try to counter you. Having these control elements are vital for the survival of a mono-red deck, imo.

Flamekin Village --> Hall of the Bandit Lord
or... just chuck an Anger, or run Hammer of Purphoros
June 29, 2016 4:10 p.m.
I have Hammer of Purphoros in the deck already, and Anger is much too difficult to put into the grave for this deck.
I have thought about Hall of the Bandit Lord before, and I have an extra sitting around somewhere, but it deals 3 damage to me every time I use it compared to Flamekin Village, which ends up costing 1 more mana to do the same thing without hurting me. I'll certainly try it out since you recommended it but I forsee the self inflicted damage being too much for this deck with Mana Crypt and Mana Vault here already.

Gonna be honest, I saw the dragon and Worldgorger Dragon didn't even cross my mind haha. Definitely going to try it out now.
