A combo/control build suited for 3v1 or 5v1 casual EDH.
synopsis of strategy: use a variety of permanents that have ETB (Enter(s) The Battlefield) triggers, as well as, mana rocks, planes-walkers, and other permanents to push advantage onto the board, then use the effect from Brago, King Eternal to make those effects continuous to invalidate opposing strategies and eventually overwhelm your opponent(s).
Mana Base:
You certainly have the option of running 35 basics in my opinion. Any change to that comes from you own preference and that alone. This version of brago is running Eldrazi Displacer, so I run lands that produce colorless mana and a variety of utility lands that also produce colorless.
Fetch/Dual shell is nice to ensure that you get all the colors you need on time, but that is just the icing on the cake if you have access to the cards.
We run a couple of Strip Mine effects because as it turns out, Maze of Ith is a decent way to fight our strategy.
Permission:
8 counterspells with Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Mana Drain, Muddle the Mixture, Forbid, Cryptic Command, Glen Elendra Archmage, and Force of Will ensure that you are a blue player. Glen resets the persist mechanic every time Brago, King Eternal connects allowing one extra Negate per turn cycle. After that, the deck is only 30 counterspells short of playing 1v1. What a bargain!!
Spot removal:
3 spot removal cards with Return to Dust, Path to Exile, and Swords to Plowshares.
I found Teferi's Protection more useful than Eerie Interlude because the board-wipes in my playgroup tend to be brutal. However, Eerie Interlude is useful in the graveyard so take that into consideration as well for that slot.
Planes-Walkers:
Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Venser, the Sojourner, and Tezzeret the Seeker are really busted with Brago, King Eternal because you can basically activate each one up to twice per turn. For instance, Venser, the Sojourner can give brago unblockable, ensuring that he connects during the combat phase, then you can blink venser to use his + ability in the post combat mainphase.
Artifacts, Enchantments, Creatures:
Now we are getting into the meatier portion of the deck list. It is appropriate to group these card types together because a lot of the effects tend to blend with each other. ETB’s tend to be 1-shot effects, so it is helpful to imagine these effects as continuously going off once per turn thanks to Brago, King Eternal.
Mana rocks:
The mana rocks in order of cost are Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Talisman of Progress, Azorius Signet, Thought Vessel, Grim Monolith, Basalt Monolith, Thran Dynamo,
guilded lotus
. Note that the brago trigger will untap these cards as collateral of flickering them. This gives us an large portion of mana that gives us virtually 2 untap steps In one turn
Land untaps:
Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, and Palinchron do similar things except they untap lands. Great Whale is a fine alternative or addition to any of these.
Active card draw:
To draw a bunch of cards, Mulldrifter, and Cloudblazer, are the way to go. Drawing 2 or more cards each turn combined with untapping mana producers more than once each turn is what makes Brago, King Eternal such a powerhouse.
Static card draw:
We also have static card draw with Mystic Remora, rystic study, and Consecrated Sphinx that does not need any other card to be amazing. Note that cumulative upkeep effects that we control are very easy to pay for since brago can restore the cards once per turn.
Evasion/Protection:
For these strategies to function properly, it is imperative that brago connects to an opponent every turn. Flying is useful but not always enough to get a clean shot. Equipping Whispersilk Cloak or activating Whirler Rogue makes brago unblockable plain and simple. He is also considered a high priority target by your opponents so Lightning Greaves is also key to protecting your brago until you can untap with him. The main caveat is that brago cannot target himself if he has shroud, protection from creatures, white, or blue.
Recursion:
Recursion is how we out value control strategies that invalidate our own. For instance, Archaeomancer, Karmic Guide, and Sun Titan are essentially the best versions of Eternal Witness that we can get without splashing green. This deck description is good for card ideas for your Roon of the Hidden Realm EDH list.
Stax:
I understand that stax effects are not for everybody and that it tends to be overpowered in certain playgroups. I like them a lot although they tend to paint a target on my forehead in terms of who is the largest threat. I can control multiple players at a time, it slows down the game long enough for me to win, and Brago, King Eternal can cheat these effects. Stonehorn Dignitary, Tsabo's Web, Winter Orb, Static Orb, and Stasis. I suppose I also consider teferi, mage of zhafir in this category as well. Note that the brand new Azor, the Lawbringer is a terrific option that combos with teferi to lock out your opponent out of instants and sorceries
Lords:
If this deck was a tribal deck, it would be a flicker/blink tribal. In that respect, the lords would be for starters Brago, King Eternal, Restoration Angel, and Panharmonicon. The latter 2 simply double all the effects I got. ‘nuff said.
Tutors:
More experimentation is needed in this category. But essentially this is the library manipulation category of the deck So far, I got Solemn Simulacrum, Recruiter of the Guard, Ancestral Knowledge, and Planar Bridge. Enlightened Tutor and Whir of Invention are my instant speed tutors of choice. I think that Whir suits the format better than Transmute Artifact being instant speed and not requiring a sacrifice of an artifact and your first-born child because it is pricey atm.
Removal:
removal in this deck takes a python approach. That means it slowly wears away at your opponent’s board until they are too slow to recover, then it disables them. All this at the collateral of being on board when brago connects. We are rocking Nevermaker, Reflector Mage, Rishadan Cutpurse, Rishadan Footpad, Rishadan Brigand, Venser, Shaper Savant, Detention Sphere, Act of Authority, Reality Acid, and Spine of Ish Sah.
Wincon/combos:
When we are ready to combo off, first, we deploy Eldrazi Displacer, Deadeye Navigator, or Strionic Resonator. These count as extra powerful lords that can take us infinite. Pair a deadeye or displacer with one of the Palinchron untap creatures to make infinite mana. Then, we select a draw card such as cloud blazer to draw a large # of cards out from your library. Next, we use Kjeldoran Outpost and untap a bunch of times to make a large army of creatures. From there we just pass the turn once and kill everyone. Strionic Resonator can combo off with Brago, King Eternal and a mana rock like Basalt Monolith to get infinite brago triggers. Just connect with Brago, King Eternal, and with his damage trigger on the stack, make three mana with Basalt Monolith, use 2 of it to retrigger brago targeting Basalt Monolith, Strionic Resonator, and Brago, King Eternal. At this point, the original trigger is no longer targeting these cards but is still on the stack. You can repeat this process as many times as you want. Repeatably activating additional etb triggers that you have on board during your combat phase, if you use Basalt Monolith, you have infinite colorless mana, if you use Gilded Lotus, then you have infinite mana. If you have Muldrifter then you draw your deck. If you have realtiy acid, then you can make all your opponents sacrifice all the permanents that they control.
A fun little combo with Deadeye Navigator is first make a ton of mana with Peregrine Drake, then draw cards with Cloudblazer until you draw Forbid, Archaeomancer, Sun Titan and Venser, Shaper Savant. Cast any spell, counter it with Forbid pitching 2 lands. Use Sun Titan to move the lands onto the battlefield and Archaeomancer to return the first spell to your hand. Use this sequence to put all your lands from your hand onto the battlefield. From there, use Venser, Shaper Savant to bounce back Tranquil Cove and one other land as a pair, as well as, the first combo to gain infinite life.
Un-set:
Clocknapper and The Grand Calcutron are the only un-cards I can recommend with this deck. I generally don’t use un-cards in constructed but that is just me.
