Strategy
Built around Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy, but even without it's namesake the deck has a lot of versatile and fast plays. An early game that consists of using Omen Hawker & The Enigma Jewel
to out value our opponent, ramping into the activated abilities of Mirrorshell Crab, Colossal Skyturtle, Boseiju, Who Endures, & Otawara, Soaring City. From here with our mana production and Moonsnare Prototype we can set ourselves up for powerful plays on Turn 3 & 4. Most commonly, we look to activate Kinnan, activate Hall of Storm Giants, activate Rootwire Amalgam, or cycle out a large Shark with Shark Typhoon. As the game goes on I look to overwhelm my opponent with my Tempo and cheating out threats.
Early Take-Aways
After some gameplay on MTGO I was very happy to see our strategy is really strong. Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy as our namesake/build around card. Mirrorshell Crab, Colossal Skyturtle, and Shark Typhoon were pivotal cards. As far as our Lands go, most everything went as planned. Boseiju, Who Endures and Otawara, Soaring City proved to be valuable mana efficient plays, Mirrex provides good early and/or constant pressure, and Hall of Storm Giants was amazing in the early or late stages of the game.
Most matchups we are able to churn out some threats and have a chance with our Mainboard. To my surprise we play very well against Control, Tempo, Combo, and Ramp strategies, it just feels like they usually need a bit of time to develop and we are able to get to the apex of our curve a lot more efficiently. Our worst matchups are usually Aggro and Midrange (specifically ones with a lot of removal). When we play against these decks it is just hard for us to get into a comfortable spot sometimes, but there is some give and take: Rona, Bristly Bill, Hall of Storm Giants, and our bounce abilities shine against Aggro while getting Jewel out instead of Omen Hawker, and our large Ward Creatures are great against Midrange. Overall I think I match up pretty well in a lot of situations, the decks that I am looking to test more against are Phoenix, Waste Not, and Boros Convoke because on paper these match ups do not look good for us.
Road to a Finished Mainboard
After this first week of gameplay I have come to a main deck that I am very happy with. Our original list had Bristly Bill, Spine Sower, Ulvenwald Oddity
, Mox Amber, and Training Grounds but all of these got substituted early with Rootwire Amalgam, Moonsnare Prototype, and Spell Pierce. All of these substitutions give our deck more versatility while enabling our strategy.
Trying out taking out 1 Rona and 1 Rootwire Amalgam for 2 Elder Gargaroth. A slow card compared to the rest of our list, but it is a bomb of Kinnan ability and helps turn late games especially against Aggro.
Sideboard Strategy
Currently is not being utilized, just brainstorming.
